Chapter 1 - The Woman He Thought He Could Ignore

Preston laughed to himself as he stepped into the rain.

He had no idea that, behind him, Vivienne was watching from the doorway.

She didn't cry.

She didn't yell.

She didn't even move.

She simply watched the man she had married walk toward another woman.

Tiffany Brooks stepped out of the Mercedes beneath a black umbrella.

Her red gown caught the light from the porch.

She looked like she belonged beside Preston.

That was exactly what he wanted the world to believe.

"You're stunning," Preston said.

Tiffany smiled.

"You clean up pretty well yourself."

He kissed her cheek.

Inside the house, Vivienne quietly closed the door.

The lock clicked.

And something inside her finally broke.

Not her heart.

That had broken months ago.

It was her patience.

Vivienne walked to the kitchen and placed the dish towel on the counter.

Then she opened a drawer.

Inside was a small black box.

She lifted it carefully.

The box contained a diamond necklace.

Not an imitation.

Not costume jewelry.

A necklace valued at more than eight million dollars.

Vivienne touched the largest stone with one finger.

"Tonight," she whispered.

Her phone rang.

She answered.

"Ms. Sinclair?"

"Yes."

"Security confirms you're leaving at eight-thirty."

"Good."

"Your private entrance is ready. Mr. Hale has arrived?"

"He will."

A pause.

"Are you certain you want him to see you tonight?"

Vivienne smiled faintly.

"I've spent five years making sure he didn't."

She closed the box.

"Tonight, I want him to."

Across town, Preston and Tiffany arrived at the Evermont Diamond Gala.

The ballroom was extraordinary.

Crystal chandeliers hung from a ceiling painted with gold leaf.

Diamonds glittered beneath spotlights.

The guest list included hedge-fund founders, tech billionaires, movie stars, political donors, and members of old New York families.

Preston felt his pulse accelerate.

"This is it," he whispered.

Tiffany slipped her arm through his.

"You look nervous."

"I'm not nervous."

"You've been checking your reflection every thirty seconds."

"I'm making an impression."

Tiffany laughed.

"Tonight, Preston, you finally get to meet the people who matter."

He smiled.

He didn't notice the security guard watching him.

He didn't notice another guard speaking quietly into an earpiece.

And he certainly didn't notice the gold insignia displayed beside the entrance.

S.H.

Sinclair Holdings.

The company sponsoring the entire gala.

Preston had spent weeks bragging about receiving an invitation.

What he didn't know was that his invitation had been personally approved by Vivienne.

At 8:41 p.m., the orchestra stopped.

A hush spread across the ballroom.

Someone whispered,

"She's coming."

Preston turned.

Tiffany followed his gaze.

The grand staircase was illuminated.

A woman appeared at the top.

Black silk gown.

Diamond earrings.

Dark hair swept into a sophisticated knot.

A necklace resting against her collarbone.

Security surrounded her.

Two executives walked behind her.

A banker whispered to another guest.

"That's Vivienne Sinclair."

Preston froze.

His face went white.

Tiffany frowned.

"Who?"

The woman descended one step.

Then another.

Preston couldn't breathe.

Because he knew that face.

He had kissed that face.

He had watched it across breakfast tables.

He had complained about it being too quiet.

He had told that woman she didn't understand his ambitions.

He had called her ordinary.

But tonight, hundreds of people stood for her.

Vivienne reached the bottom of the stairs.

The chairman of Evermont Diamonds approached her.

"Ms. Sinclair. Welcome home."

Vivienne smiled.

"Thank you, Charles."

Preston's champagne glass slipped from his hand.

It shattered.

Everyone turned.

Vivienne looked directly at him.

For three seconds, neither spoke.

Then she smiled.

Not warmly.

Not lovingly.

Professionally.

"Good evening, Mr. Hale."

The ballroom went silent.

Tiffany stared between them.

"Mr. Hale?"

Preston swallowed.

"Vivienne..."

She tilted her head.

"Please don't make a scene."

A few guests exchanged looks.

Preston stepped forward.

"What are you doing here?"

Vivienne smiled.

"I own the gala."

His face changed.

The words landed like a gunshot.

Tiffany whispered,

"You own this?"

Vivienne looked at her.

"Among other things."

Then she turned toward the crowd.

"Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for joining us."

Applause erupted.

Preston stood motionless.

For the first time in his life, he realized something terrifying.

He hadn't married an ordinary woman.

He had married the woman everyone in the room had been waiting for.

May you like

And she had been waiting for him, too.

Just not for the reason he thought.
