Chapter 5 - Who Owns Everything

The pen felt like a lead weight in Ethan’s hand.

He signed. He had no choice. If he didn't sign, Vance Global would initiate immediate criminal proceedings for corporate fraud and embezzlement—crimes Ethan had committed over the past year to keep the company afloat, crimes Nora’s legal team had documented in agonizing detail.

Margaret sat in the corner of the boardroom, her head in her hands, weeping silently as two security guards stood by the door, waiting for the police to arrive.

Nora stood up. She did not look at the signed papers. She did not look at her ex-husband, who was now staring at his hands, his life completely demolished in the span of an hour.

“Marcus,” Nora said, walking toward the door. “Have the building cleared by noon. I don't want a single piece of the Whitmore name left in this building.”

“Yes, Ms. Vance,” Marcus said, bowing his head.

Nora walked out of the boardroom. She did not run. She did not celebrate. The weight in her chest was still there—the empty space where her baby should have been—but for the first time, she felt a sense of clean, cold peace.

As she stepped out of the office building, the bright afternoon sun hit her face. A crowd of reporters had already gathered at the base of the steps, their cameras flashing as they caught sight of the woman who had just brought down one of the city's oldest dynasties.

Nora ignored them. She walked down the steps, her head held high, and got into the back of a waiting black sedan.

The car drove away from the tower, heading toward the quiet, green suburbs where her mother’s new home sat.

Inside her purse, resting on top of her legal files, was a tiny, soft yellow cardigan and a plush elephant with one blue ear. They were clean now, the blood washed away, leaving only the soft, gentle scent of lavender.

Nora reached down, her fingers wrapping around the tiny cardigan. She closed her eyes, letting a single, quiet tear slip down her cheek.

The Whitmores had thought they owned everything. They had thought their money, their name, and their power made them untouchable.

But as the city faded behind her, Nora looked out the window, knowing the truth.

The name was gone. The empire was gone.

And she was finally free.
