Chapter 13 - The Evidence Beneath the Chapel

The Rossi compound had been built in stages over nearly a century.

The oldest structure was a stone chapel constructed by Dante’s grandfather. Publicly, it served as a private place of worship for the family. Beneath it lay the true heart of the Rossi organization.

Ledgers.

Contracts.

Photographs.

Recordings.

Proof of alliances and betrayals dating back decades.

Salvatore Moretti wanted the archive burned before federal investigators reached it.

Dante wanted it delivered intact.

They entered the compound through a drainage tunnel near the western wall.

Dante, Aria, Nico, Lucia, and six loyal guards moved beneath the frozen grounds while federal teams waited outside the perimeter. Judge Hale had secured a warrant, but an immediate raid could trigger shooting near the residential staff still trapped inside.

“We evacuate the civilians first,” Dante said.

Nico nodded.

The tunnel opened behind the chapel cellar.

Aria climbed the final ladder despite the pain in her rib. Dante remained directly below her without touching unless she asked.

They emerged into darkness.

Above them, footsteps crossed the chapel floor.

Lucia accessed the security panel.

“Salvatore controls the north and south wings. Most of the kitchen staff are locked in the banquet hall.”

“And the archive?” Dante asked.

“Still sealed.”

“Why?”

“Your biometric lock.”

Dante had installed it after taking power.

Salvatore needed him alive long enough to open the vault.

A voice sounded through the chapel speakers.

“Welcome home, nephew.”

Salvatore Moretti appeared near the altar holding a pistol.

Twenty armed men stepped from the shadows.

Dante’s guards raised their weapons.

Salvatore smiled.

“You brought the bride.”

Aria felt Dante shift in front of her.

“She leaves,” Dante said.

“No one leaves.”

Salvatore was nearly seventy, broad-shouldered despite his age, with white hair and a scar beneath his left eye. He had carried Dante at his baptism. He had taught him to shoot, negotiate, and recognize a lie before it was spoken.

Now he pointed a weapon at the man he once called family.

“You embarrassed us,” Salvatore said. “You handed private history to federal agents.”

“I handed murderers their consequences.”

“You handed strangers the rope they will use to hang every Rossi.”

“Then perhaps we deserve the rope.”

Murmurs moved through Salvatore’s men.

The old captain’s face darkened.

“This woman poisoned you.”

Aria stepped beside Dante.

“No. He simply learned that cruelty and strength are not the same thing.”

Salvatore aimed at her.

Dante moved instantly.

“Point that weapon at me.”

“There,” Salvatore told his men. “Look at him. The king of Boston shielding a Sterling.”

Lucia raised her voice.

“Our father and Uncle Enzo arranged the murder of Catherine Sterling.”

Several men reacted.

That truth had not been included in Salvatore’s version of events.

“They made difficult decisions,” Salvatore said.

“They murdered a mother,” Dante replied.

“They protected the family.”

“No. They protected themselves.”

A door opened near the sacristy.

Caleb Sterling entered with Victor behind him.

Aria’s blood turned cold.

Victor looked exhausted for the first time in her life. His perfect hair had fallen across his forehead. His expensive coat was stained with snow.

Caleb carried a handgun.

Salvatore frowned. “You were told to wait outside.”

“Plans changed,” Caleb said.

Victor looked toward Aria.

“You could have ended this by returning the key.”

“The evidence was never yours.”

“It belonged to our family.”

“It belonged to the people you hurt.”

Victor’s face hardened.

“You have destroyed everything your mother built.”

“My mother tried to escape you.”

“She was confused.”

“You killed her.”

Silence followed.

Victor’s gaze moved toward Dante.

“His family killed her.”

“At your request.”

“You cannot prove that.”

Lucia lifted her phone.

“Dominic confessed in federal custody.”

For the first time, Victor looked afraid.

Caleb noticed.

“You said there was no confession.”

Victor ignored him.

Salvatore gestured toward Dante.

“Open the archive.”

“No.”

Salvatore aimed at Lucia.

Dante’s guards shifted.

“Open it,” Salvatore repeated, “or your sister dies.”

Aria watched the positions of the armed men.

A fire alarm switch was mounted near the rear pillar. Above it, the chapel’s emergency sprinklers were connected to the estate’s independent water system.

She remembered something Elena had told her during the drive from Ipswich.

Caleb hated alarms.

As children, he had panicked during fire drills because the sound triggered memories of an early house fire.

Aria stepped away from Dante.

Caleb noticed.

“Where are you going?”

She pulled the alarm.

A deafening bell erupted.

The sprinklers activated.

Water poured from the ceiling.

Caleb spun toward the noise, covering one ear. His weapon lowered.

Nico struck the lights.

Darkness swallowed the chapel.

Dante’s guards moved using night-vision equipment.

Aria dropped behind a pew.

Gunshots cracked, but they were controlled and brief. Loyal guards targeted weapons and legs rather than firing blindly.

Dante reached Salvatore near the altar.

The older man swung his pistol.

Dante blocked the strike and drove him against the stone rail.

“You were supposed to become your father,” Salvatore grunted.

“That was never my ambition.”

Dante disarmed him.

Across the chapel, Caleb seized Aria by the hair.

She felt the barrel of his weapon against her ribs.

“Stop!” he shouted.

The shooting ceased.

Emergency lights flickered on.

Caleb dragged Aria toward the altar.

Dante turned slowly.

“Release her.”

“You took everything from us,” Caleb said.

“No,” Aria replied. “Father did.”

“Be quiet.”

“He made you hurt me because it proved you were loyal.”

“Be quiet.”

“He never loved you.”

Caleb’s grip tightened.

Victor stood near the side door.

“Caleb,” he said, “do not be foolish.”

“Tell them.”

Victor’s eyes moved toward the armed men.

“Tell them you ordered everything,” Caleb demanded. “Tell them about Mother.”

Victor remained silent.

Caleb’s face broke.

“You said we were protecting the family.”

“We were.”

“Then help me.”

Victor took one step backward.

He was preparing to run.

Caleb saw it.

So did Aria.

“You were going to leave me,” Caleb whispered.

Victor reached for the door.

Caleb turned the weapon toward his father.

Dante moved.

He pulled Aria away as the gun fired.

The bullet struck the stone beside Victor’s head.

Nico tackled Caleb.

Federal agents poured through the chapel entrances.

Salvatore’s men dropped their weapons.

Victor was arrested before he reached the courtyard.

Caleb fought until an agent pressed him against the floor.

As he was handcuffed, he looked at Aria.

“I did everything he asked.”

Aria stood beside Dante, trembling but upright.

“That was your choice.”

Dante opened the archive.

He did not burn the evidence.

May you like

He turned it over to the federal government.

By sunrise, the Rossi empire as his father had built it no longer existed.
