Chapter 10 - The Christmas Video

Three days after Christmas, a video appeared online.

I did not post it.

Emily did not post it.

Ryan’s cousin Melissa did.

Apparently she had recorded part of the Christmas dinner from the living room.

She claimed she had been filming the children opening gifts.

Maybe that was true.

Maybe not.

The video began with Noah showing Ava a toy.

Then my voice could be heard in the dining room.

“Excuse me?”

The camera shifted slightly.

Ryan stood beside my chair.

Linda sat in it.

“My mother is sitting there. She’s the guest of honor this year.”

The recording captured Emily lowering her head.

It captured Ryan saying I made everything about myself.

It captured me removing my apron.

And it captured my final sentence.

“The meal is finished. The house is not.”

The video was less than one minute long.

By the time I saw it, thousands of people had watched it.

Comments poured in.

Some defended me.

Some called me dramatic.

Some accused Emily of weakness.

Some attacked Ryan.

Some attacked Linda.

Strangers argued about my family as if we were characters on television.

I hated it.

Ryan loved one part.

The attention gave him an opportunity to tell his version.

He posted a long statement.

He claimed I had misunderstood a harmless seating arrangement.

He said I had a history of emotional manipulation.

He accused me of using housing to control my daughter.

He implied that I had become “increasingly confused and volatile” since Henry’s death.

There it was.

The story he had been preparing.

Confused.

Volatile.

Exactly what the photographs had been intended to support.

Emily read his post at the kitchen table.

“He’s doing it.”

“Yes.”

“He’s actually doing it.”

Within an hour, Ryan added another comment.

He said he had spent years helping maintain my property.

That was partly true.

He had once cleaned the gutters.

He had changed two light fixtures.

He had also broken my lawn mower and never replaced it.

But online, details become whatever the loudest person says first.

Then came something worse.

Ryan uploaded a photograph of me standing beside my car outside a pharmacy.

The caption:

SHE OFTEN FORGOT WHERE SHE PARKED. WE TRIED TO HELP.

I remembered that day.

I had not forgotten my car.

I had stopped to speak with an old friend before walking across the parking lot.

The photograph had been part of Linda’s collection.

I felt violated.

Emily immediately replied publicly.

My mother has never been diagnosed with cognitive impairment. My husband’s statement is false. I have asked him to remove private photographs taken without her consent.

Within minutes, Ryan deleted the post.

Too late.

Screenshots existed.

Helen was almost pleased.

“He just gave us evidence.”

“I don’t feel pleased.”

“You don’t have to.”

She advised me not to fight online.

No explanations.

No emotional responses.

“Let him talk,” she said. “People who are panicking often overproduce evidence.”

She was right.

Ryan kept talking.

In private messages to relatives, he described me as unstable.

One relative sent the messages to Emily.

In another, he claimed the house had been “promised” to them.

It had not.

Then Melissa contacted us.

Ryan’s cousin.

The woman who posted the video.

She apologized.

“I didn’t realize it would spread.”

Emily asked why she had posted it at all.

Melissa hesitated.

“Because I was angry.”

“At who?”

“Ryan.”

Apparently Christmas dinner had not been the first time he had behaved that way.

Ryan had borrowed $12,000 from his uncle.

Six thousand from his brother.

Three thousand from Melissa’s husband.

Always for business.

Always temporary.

Very little had been repaid.

The entire Caldwell family had been covering for him.

Linda most of all.

Melissa sent us screenshots.

Messages.

Loan requests.

Promises.

One message from Ryan to his brother caught my attention.

ONCE THE HAWTHORNE PROPERTY IS STRUCTURED, EVERYONE GETS PAID.

My house.

Again.

Not his business.

Not his savings.

My home was the financial rescue plan.

Emily stared at the message.

“He was going to use your house to pay everyone.”

“Apparently.”

“Did Dad ever trust him?”

I thought of Henry.

He had met Ryan only a handful of times before his cancer worsened.

Henry was polite.

He never criticized him.

But one night, after Ryan left, Henry said:

“He listens for opportunities when other people are talking about their lives.”

At the time, I did not understand.

Now I did.

Ryan had heard everything as potential leverage.

Inheritance.

Property.

Connections.

Weaknesses.

Plans.

The next morning, the video had reached nearly a million views across multiple reposts.

My phone rang constantly.

Old friends.

Church members.

Neighbors.

Even a local reporter.

I declined all interviews.

Then someone knocked.

It was Mrs. Patterson from next door.

She was seventy-four and carried a casserole.

“I saw the video,” she said.

I closed my eyes.

“Of course you did.”

She smiled.

“Honey, everybody saw the video.”

I let her in.

She placed the casserole on my counter.

Then lowered her voice.

“I have something to tell you.”

“What?”

“I saw Ryan with a real-estate agent here in October.”

I stared at her.

“Here?”

“In your driveway.”

“When?”

“You were visiting your sister in Cincinnati.”

My stomach tightened.

“What were they doing?”

“Walking around the outside of the house. Measuring things.”

Emily entered the kitchen.

“What?”

Mrs. Patterson looked uncomfortable.

“I thought you knew.”

“No.”

“They were here almost an hour.”

“Did they go inside?”

“Yes.”

Of course they did.

Ryan lived there.

He had access.

My neighbor continued.

“The woman took pictures.”

“Do you remember her name?”

Mrs. Patterson thought.

“I heard Ryan call her Kara.”

Emily sat down.

The room became silent.

Kara Mitchell.

The other woman.

The commercial property manager.

She had walked through my house while I was gone.

Photographed it.

Measured it.

Planned its future.

Possibly slept with my son-in-law.

Possibly planned a business with him.

I suddenly understood something.

The affair and the property scheme might not be separate.

They might be the same story.

May you like

Ryan had not simply found another woman.

He had found a partner.
