CHAPTER 4 — THE CHOICE THAT BREAKS MEN

“Drop the gun, Kingsley.”

The attacker’s voice was calm.

Too calm.

Cold steel pressed harder against Elena’s temple.

Lucas screamed.

“Elena!”

Andrew froze.

Every security guard in the hallway raised weapons.

But no one fired.

No one could.

One wrong move—

Elena dies.

The attacker stood half-hidden behind her, one arm locked around her neck, pistol steady.

Professional.

Military posture.

No trembling.

No panic.

This was not a random mercenary.

This was someone trained to kill under pressure.

Andrew slowly lowered his gun.

Not fully.

Just enough.

His voice became dangerously quiet.

“What do you want?”

The attacker smiled.

“You already know.”

Andrew’s eyes hardened.

“Damien.”

The man chuckled.

“Smart.”

Lucas cried uncontrollably.

Elena forced herself to stay still.

Her pulse thundered.

But her mind remained sharp.

Observe.

Breathe.

Wait.

The attacker pressed the barrel harder.

“Drop it completely.”

Andrew obeyed.

The gun hit the floor.

Clack.

The attacker grinned.

“There we go.”

Security chief Marcus stepped forward.

“Release her.”

The attacker laughed.

“You first.”

Andrew raised a hand.

Marcus stopped.

The attacker’s gaze never left Andrew.

“Mr. Cross sends a message.”

Andrew said nothing.

The attacker continued.

“He says you’ve spent years taking what belongs to him.”

Andrew’s expression didn’t change.

“Damien never owned anything I took.”

The attacker smirked.

“That’s not how he sees it.”

Andrew’s voice lowered.

“Damien confuses ambition with entitlement.”

The man laughed.

“Still arrogant.”

“No.”

Andrew’s eyes turned to ice.

“Still correct.”

The attacker’s smile faded.

He hated calm.

Everyone did.

Because calm meant control.

And even unarmed—

Andrew somehow still controlled the room.

The attacker shifted tactics.

“Let’s simplify.”

He pulled Elena tighter.

She winced.

Lucas screamed louder.

“Please don’t hurt her!”

The attacker glanced at Lucas.

Then smiled.

Cruel.

“Oh.”

He said softly.

“So this is the famous heir.”

Andrew’s body became rigid.

Dangerous.

Predatory.

The temperature in the room seemed to drop.

The attacker noticed.

And enjoyed it.

“Yes.”

He whispered.

“That got your attention.”

He lifted the gun slightly.

Toward Lucas.

Every guard shouted.

“No!”

Andrew’s voice cut through everything.

Sharp.

Absolute.

“Don’t.”

The attacker grinned.

“There he is.”

He tilted his head.

“The real Andrew Kingsley.”

The assassin’s voice lowered.

“Damien says you only care when blood is involved.”

Andrew’s jaw clenched.

“Say what you came to say.”

“Oh, I will.”

The attacker leaned close to Elena’s ear.

Then spoke loud enough for all.

“Choose.”

Silence.

Lucas sobbed.

Elena stopped breathing.

The attacker continued.

“One life.”

He pointed the gun at Lucas.

“Your son.”

Then back to Elena.

“Or her.”

Silence exploded.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

Even Marcus looked horrified.

Elena’s blood ran cold.

No.

No.

This couldn’t be real.

The attacker smiled.

“Thirty seconds.”

Lucas screamed.

“Dad!”

Andrew stared.

Unmoving.

Emotionless.

But inside—

War.

Absolute war.

His son.

His child.

His blood.

The boy who gave him purpose.

The last piece of the woman he lost.

And Elena.

The woman he never stopped loving.

The woman he abandoned once.

The woman fate had placed before him again.

The attacker counted.

“Twenty-eight.”

“Twenty-seven.”

“Twenty-six.”

Elena’s breathing shook.

No.

Andrew could not choose.

Should not choose.

She looked at Lucas.

The boy was terrified.

Small.

Innocent.

Six years old.

No child deserved this.

She knew the answer instantly.

Even before Andrew did.

If someone had to die—

It would be her.

She whispered.

“Andrew…”

His eyes locked on hers.

She saw it.

Terror.

Not for himself.

For losing someone again.

Her voice softened.

“Save Lucas.”

Lucas screamed.

“No!”

Elena smiled through tears.

“It’s okay.”

Andrew’s voice cracked.

“No.”

One word.

But Elena felt her heart shatter.

Because she heard the truth in it.

Not command.

Not denial.

Desperation.

She whispered:

“Yes.”

The attacker grinned.

“How touching.”

“Fifteen seconds.”

Andrew’s breathing slowed.

Something changed.

Elena saw it.

The shift.

The terrifying calm.

No panic.

No emotion.

Pure calculation.

She remembered something from years ago.

Andrew once told her:

When cornered, stop feeling. Start seeing.

His eyes scanned.

Angle.

Distance.

Grip.

Trigger pressure.

Weight distribution.

Elena noticed his gaze.

And suddenly understood.

He had a plan.

Tiny.

Impossible.

But real.

He met her eyes.

A microscopic nod.

Her pulse exploded.

He was telling her.

Trust me.

The attacker kept counting.

“Ten.”

“Nine.”

“Eight.”

Andrew spoke.

Quietly.

“Damien lied to you.”

The attacker frowned.

“Seven.”

Andrew continued.

“He promised payment.”

“Six.”

“He won’t pay.”

“Five.”

“Shut up.”

“He kills liabilities.”

“Four.”

The attacker’s jaw tightened.

Andrew pressed.

“He already marked you expendable.”

“Three.”

“LIAR!”

That moment.

Tiny.

Critical.

Emotion.

Distraction.

Elena moved.

She slammed her heel backward into his knee.

CRACK.

The attacker screamed.

Gun shifted.

Andrew moved.

Faster than thought.

He lunged.

Marcus fired.

BANG.

Chaos exploded.

Elena dropped.

Lucas screamed.

The attacker fired blindly.

Bullet tore through glass.

Andrew crashed into him.

The gun flew.

Both men hit the floor.

The assassin was strong.

Extremely.

Knife drawn instantly.

He slashed.

Andrew dodged.

Too late—

Blade cut his shoulder.

Blood sprayed.

Elena screamed.

“ANDREW!”

The attacker drove the knife down.

Andrew trapped his wrist.

Muscles shaking.

Knife inches from his throat.

The assassin snarled.

“You should’ve chosen!”

Andrew’s voice turned monstrous.

“I did.”

CRACK.

He broke the man’s wrist.

Knife dropped.

Elbow.

Jaw.

Rib.

Three strikes.

Brutal.

Precise.

The attacker collapsed.

Marcus restrained him.

Finished.

Silence.

Heavy.

Shaking.

Lucas broke first.

“Dad!”

He ran.

Andrew caught him with one arm.

The other pressed against his bleeding shoulder.

Elena rushed over.

Hands shaking.

“You’re bleeding badly.”

Andrew looked at her.

Alive.

She was alive.

Relief hit him harder than pain.

Then—

The attacker laughed.

Everyone turned.

Blood in his mouth.

Eyes wild.

Insane.

He spat.

“You still don’t know.”

Andrew narrowed his eyes.

“Know what?”

The man smiled.

Cruel.

“You think this is about business.”

Silence.

He laughed harder.

“It was never about money.”

Andrew’s pulse slowed.

Danger.

The attacker looked directly at Elena.

Then said:

“Ask her.”

Elena froze.

No.

No.

The attacker grinned.

“Ask Elena who Damien Cross really is.”

Andrew slowly turned.

Toward Elena.

Her face drained white.

His voice came low.

“Elena?”

She stopped breathing.

The attacker laughed hysterically.

“Yes…”

He whispered.

“Tell him.”

Lucas looked confused.

“What’s happening?”

Elena trembled.

No.

Not like this.

Not now.

Not in front of Lucas.

Andrew stepped closer.

Ignoring blood.

“Elena.”

Her eyes filled.

She whispered:

“…I was going to tell you.”

Ice entered his veins.

Tell me what?

The attacker spat blood.

“She won’t.”

He smiled.

“So I will.”

Andrew’s voice became lethal.

“Speak.”

The attacker grinned.

“Damien Cross…”

Pause.

“…is Elena’s brother.”

Everything stopped.

Lucas blinked.

Marcus froze.

Security stopped moving.

Andrew went completely still.

No.

Impossible.

His mind rejected it.

He looked at Elena.

Say no.

Say he’s lying.

Say anything.

Elena cried.

And said nothing.

That silence became confirmation.

Andrew felt something inside him crack.

Not anger.

Not betrayal.

Something deeper.

Disorientation.

Elena.

Damien’s sister?

No.

No.

The woman who hated greed.

The woman who loved honesty.

The woman he trusted most.

Related to Damien?

Andrew whispered:

“Tell me he’s lying.”

Elena broke.

Tears streamed.

“…He’s my half-brother.”

The words hit like a gunshot.

Lucas clung to Andrew.

Scared.

Confused.

Andrew stared.

His mind flashed.

Ten years.

Every memory.

Every conversation.

Every touch.

Every goodbye.

Was it real?

Or manipulation?

His voice dropped.

Raw.

Painfully raw.

“Did you know?”

Elena cried harder.

“No.”

The attacker laughed.

“Liar.”

“I DIDN’T!”

She screamed.

Years of pain exploded.

“I didn’t know until two years after you left!”

Andrew’s chest heaved.

She continued.

“My mother told me before she died!”

The attacker smirked.

“Still family.”

Elena spun toward him.

“I HATE HIM!”

Pure fury.

Pure truth.

“He destroyed my mother’s life!”

The room shook with emotion.

Elena sobbed.

“He ruined everyone!”

She turned to Andrew.

Broken.

Desperate.

“I never told you because I was afraid.”

Afraid.

Of what?

She answered before he asked.

“That you’d look at me and only see him.”

Andrew said nothing.

Because part of him already was.

And that realization disgusted him.

The attacker smiled.

Mission complete.

Distrust planted.

Perfect.

Then—

Lucas spoke.

Tiny voice.

Quiet.

But devastating.

“Is she bad?”

Everyone froze.

Lucas looked up at Andrew.

Then at Elena.

Tears in his eyes.

“Should I be scared of her?”

Elena broke completely.

That question hurt more than any bullet.

Andrew looked at Lucas.

Then Elena.

Then the attacker.

And suddenly—

Everything became clear.

Damien’s true goal.

Not murder.

Not money.

Isolation.

Destroy trust.

Destroy love.

Destroy connection.

Make Andrew alone.

Again.

Andrew slowly exhaled.

Then looked at the attacker.

And smiled.

The man frowned.

Why smile?

Andrew bent down.

Picked up the dropped gun.

Pointed it at the attacker’s forehead.

Marcus startled.

“Sir—”

Andrew ignored him.

His eyes never left the attacker.

“You almost succeeded.”

The attacker smirked.

“Almost?”

Andrew’s smile widened.

Cold.

Deadly.

“You made one mistake.”

“What?”

Andrew looked toward Elena.

Then Lucas.

Then back.

“You assumed blood creates loyalty.”

The attacker’s expression changed.

Andrew spoke clearly.

“For men like Damien…”

His finger tightened on trigger.

“…maybe.”

Then he looked at Elena.

And said the words that made her collapse in tears.

“But family is chosen.”

BANG.

The bullet hit the floor.

Two inches from the attacker’s head.

Pure terror.

The attacker screamed.

Andrew lowered the gun.

Voice lethal.

“Take him alive.”

Marcus nodded instantly.

Guards dragged the man away.

Silence returned.

Then Andrew turned.

Toward Elena.

She trembled.

“Andrew…”

She expected anger.

Distrust.

Distance.

He stepped closer.

Closer.

Then stopped.

His voice was tired.

Honest.

Painfully honest.

“You should have told me.”

Tears fell.

“I know.”

“I’m hurt.”

“I know.”

“I’m angry.”

“I know.”

She shook.

“But…”

His gaze softened.

“…I believe you.”

Elena cried.

Lucas tugged Andrew’s sleeve.

The boy looked between them.

Then asked:

“Can she stay?”

Andrew blinked.

Lucas sniffled.

“She promised not to leave.”

Elena covered her mouth.

Crying harder.

Andrew looked at his son.

Then at Elena.

For the first time in years—

The walls around his heart cracked.

Not fully.

But enough.

Enough for light.

Enough for hope.

Enough for one terrifying realization.

He still loved her.

And across the city—

Damien watched the failed mission.

His smile disappeared.

Then slowly returned.

Darker.

More dangerous.

He whispered:

“So.”

He poured another drink.

“You chose her.”

Pause.

“Good.”

His eyes turned monstrous.

“Then Phase Two begins.”

He pressed a remote.

A hidden screen lit up.

Vanessa appeared.

Tied to a chair.

Mouth taped.

Eyes wide with terror.

Damien smiled.

“Let’s see…”

He whispered.

May you like

“…how many women Andrew Kingsley can save.”

TO BE CONTINUED…
