Chapter 13 - The Grave Without a Body

St. Catherine’s cemetery sat beneath a sky the color of steel.

Claire had not returned in twelve years.

The last time she stood there, rain ran down her black dress while a priest spoke about eternal rest over a coffin containing someone else.

Now Adrian’s convoy stopped outside the cemetery gates.

No sirens.

No police.

Victor had Lily.

Every decision became smaller when a child was in the balance.

Get the archive.

Trade if necessary.

Recover Lily.

Destroy Victor afterward.

Adrian did not pretend to have a more civilized plan.

Claire stood beside her mother’s grave.

ELENA BENNETT.

1968–2014.

BELOVED MOTHER.

She laughed bitterly.

“She wasn’t even in there.”

Sofia stood beside her.

“She chose the site.”

Claire looked at her.

“My mother planned her own fake funeral?”

“She planned where Victor would never search twice.”

Adrian examined the headstone.

“Where?”

Sofia pointed.

“Not the coffin.”

“What then?”

“The foundation.”

Daniel’s men scanned for traps before touching anything.

A removable stone plate was found beneath the rear base.

The brass key fit.

Inside sat a metal cylinder.

Adrian pulled it out.

Not a ledger.

A flash drive sealed inside protective casing.

Claire stared.

“That’s it?”

Sofia nodded.

“Maybe.”

“Maybe?”

“Elena loved redundancy.”

Adrian almost smiled.

“That appears hereditary.”

They connected the drive to an isolated laptop.

Encrypted.

A message appeared.

THREE QUESTIONS.

Claire frowned.

“What questions?”

The first appeared.

WHAT DID CLAIRE CALL THE MOON WHEN SHE WAS FOUR?

Claire stared.

“I don’t remember.”

Sofia smiled faintly.

“Elena did.”

Claire closed her eyes.

A memory surfaced.

Sitting on her mother’s lap.

Pointing through a window.

“It was broken.”

Adrian looked at her.

“What?”

“I called the crescent moon the broken moon.”

She typed it.

Accepted.

Second question.

WHAT DID SAMUEL PROMISE ELENA AT LAKE MICHIGAN?

Claire looked at Samuel over video call.

Her father stared.

Then smiled painfully.

“That I’d find her in every lifetime.”

Claire looked away.

“Wow.”

Samuel shrugged.

“I was twenty-four.”

Adrian muttered, “Embarrassing.”

Samuel pointed at the screen.

“You’re unmarried at thirty-nine. Your opinions are irrelevant.”

Claire laughed despite herself.

She typed the answer.

Accepted.

Third question.

WHAT WAS SOFIA’S FAVORITE SONG?

Everyone looked at Sofia.

She frowned.

“I had twenty.”

Adrian answered immediately.

“Blue Moon.”

Sofia stared.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“My favorite was Dream a Little Dream.”

“You forced me to play Blue Moon every night for six months.”

“Because you only knew four chords.”

Claire stared between them.

“This feels important.”

Sofia looked at the screen.

“Try his answer.”

Adrian typed BLUE MOON.

Accepted.

Sofia looked offended.

“My own memory archive betrayed me.”

The drive decrypted.

Thousands of files appeared.

Accounts.

Videos.

Audio.

Medical records.

Payments.

Photographs.

Government officials.

Executives.

Police commanders.

Judges.

Contractors.

And Victor Kane.

Enough evidence to collapse not one empire but dozens.

Daniel whispered, “This is nuclear.”

Adrian looked at the files.

“Copy everything.”

Claire grabbed his arm.

“Lily.”

“I know.”

The phone rang.

Victor.

Adrian answered.

“You found it.”

“Yes.”

“Bring the original drive.”

“Where?”

Victor gave an address.

Claire recognized it.

The lake house where she had once lived with Victor for three weeks early in their relationship.

His private property outside the city.

A place she thought he had sold years ago.

Victor said, “Claire comes alone.”

“No.”

Claire looked at Adrian.

Victor continued.

“If I see one of your men, Lily disappears.”

Adrian’s face hardened.

“I’m not sending her alone.”

Claire whispered, “Yes, you are.”

He looked at her.

Victor heard.

“Smart girl.”

Adrian muted the phone.

“No.”

“She’s my daughter.”

“Exactly.”

“I can get closer than you.”

“He expects you.”

“He trusts that I’m terrified.”

“You are terrified.”

“Yes.”

Claire looked him directly in the eyes.

“And that makes the lie believable.”

Adrian said nothing.

She continued.

“You told me fear is useful.”

“I’m reconsidering my educational philosophy.”

Claire almost smiled.

“Adrian.”

“No.”

“Then give me a better plan.”

He did not have one.

Not one that guaranteed Lily’s safety.

Claire touched his arm.

“You’ll be nearby.”

“Yes.”

“You’ll have tracking.”

“Yes.”

“You’ll hear everything.”

“Yes.”

“And if something goes wrong?”

Adrian’s expression darkened.

“Something will go wrong.”

Claire nodded.

“Then be ready.”

At 5:42 p.m., Claire drove toward Victor’s lake house alone.

The original drive sat inside her coat.

A tracker was sewn into the lining.

A microphone hidden beneath a button.

Adrian’s team remained more than a mile away.

No visible pursuit.

Claire reached the house.

Victor waited on the veranda.

No guards visible.

That meant there were many.

“Claire.”

She stepped out.

“Lily.”

“Inside.”

“Let me see her.”

Victor gestured.

A woman brought Lily to the window.

The child pressed both hands against the glass.

“Mommy!”

Claire’s heart nearly stopped.

“She leaves first.”

Victor smiled.

“No.”

“The drive first.”

“Yes.”

Claire climbed the steps.

Victor extended his hand.

She held the drive.

“You ruined my life.”

Victor smiled.

“You’ve always had an exaggerated sense of your importance.”

“You tried to buy your daughter.”

“I tried to buy access to Elena’s archive.”

“She was four months old.”

“A logistical detail.”

Claire wanted to kill him.

Instead she smiled faintly.

Victor noticed.

“What?”

“I finally understand.”

“Understand what?”

“Why she never liked you.”

His expression tightened.

“Who?”

“Lily.”

Victor’s eyes cooled.

“You should be careful.”

“No.”

Claire stepped closer.

“You should.”

She handed him the drive.

Victor examined it.

Then gestured toward the door.

“Take the child.”

Claire froze.

That easy?

She entered.

Lily ran toward her.

“Mommy!”

Claire dropped to her knees.

Held her.

Smelled her hair.

Counted her fingers.

Checked her face.

Safe.

“Come on.”

They moved toward the door.

Victor stood outside with the drive.

Then someone emerged from the hallway behind them.

A woman.

Claire stopped.

Rachel Moore.

The fake housekeeper.

She held a gun.

Victor sighed.

“I’m sorry.”

Claire stared.

“No, you’re not.”

“True.”

Lily clung to her.

Victor continued.

“You understand the inconvenience. If you leave, Adrian destroys everything.”

“He already copied it.”

Victor smiled.

“No.”

Claire’s expression did not change.

“He copied what Elena wanted him to copy.”

Claire froze.

Victor held up the drive.

“This is incomplete.”

Rachel grabbed Claire’s arm.

Lily screamed.

Victor stepped closer.

“The real archive requires Harbor.”

Sofia.

Claire stared.

“You need her memory.”

“Yes.”

“So this was never about the drive.”

“It was about confirming she was alive.”

Claire’s stomach dropped.

By rescuing Sofia, they had revealed Harbor.

Victor smiled.

“Thank Adrian for me.”

A gunshot exploded outside.

Rachel spun.

The window shattered.

Lily screamed.

Adrian’s voice came through Claire’s hidden earpiece.

“Down.”

Claire threw herself over Lily.

The lake house erupted into chaos.

Security teams breached from three directions.

Victor ran.

Rachel fired toward the window.

Another shot struck the wall.

Claire dragged Lily behind a stone fireplace.

“Mommy!”

“I’ve got you!”

Victor vanished through a rear door.

Adrian entered seconds later.

He saw Lily.

Claire.

Alive.

His expression changed with relief so brief nobody else might have noticed.

Then a scream came from outside.

Daniel shouted, “Victor has a boat!”

Adrian ran.

Claire grabbed his hand.

“Go.”

He looked at Lily.

“Pinkie promise,” she said through tears.

Adrian crouched.

“You’re safe.”

“You promised you’d come.”

“I did.”

She held up her pinky.

He linked his finger around hers.

Then left.

Victor’s boat raced across the lake.

Adrian’s men followed.

Claire stood on the dock with Lily in her arms.

Victor reached the opposite shore.

A black helicopter waited.

Adrian realized too late.

The boat was another distraction.

Victor ran toward the helicopter.

Then stopped.

Someone stood beside it.

Sofia.

Alone.

Victor stared.

Adrian’s blood went cold.

“Sofia!”

She looked across the water.

Then at Victor.

And smiled.

Victor’s face changed.

For the first time in his life, he looked genuinely terrified.

Sofia held up a phone.

“The entire archive went public thirty seconds ago.”

Victor stared.

“You’re lying.”

“No.”

She tapped the screen.

Phones began ringing everywhere.

Victor’s.

Adrian’s.

Daniel’s.

News alerts.

Federal agencies.

Reporters.

Judges.

Executives.

Years of secrets exploding simultaneously.

Sofia stepped closer to Victor.

“You wanted Harbor.”

She looked him directly in the eyes.

“You found her.”

Victor reached for his gun.

Adrian shouted.

But Sofia was faster.

She did not shoot him.

She stepped aside.

Federal vehicles roared onto the property behind the helicopter.

Victor froze.

Agents poured out.

Daniel looked at Adrian.

“You called the feds?”

“No.”

Sofia smiled across the lake.

“I did.”

Victor turned toward the water.

Nowhere left.

No boat.

No helicopter.

No secret officials willing to protect him because their secrets were already public.

Agents surrounded him.

For decades, Victor Kane survived by knowing what everyone feared losing.

Sofia took that power away in thirty seconds.

Victor looked across the water at Adrian.

“This isn’t over.”

Adrian stood on the opposite dock.

“No.”

He glanced toward Claire and Lily.

Then back at Victor.

“It finally is.”

Victor Kane was handcuffed at sunset.

And for the first time since 12:03 that morning, the Moretti family stopped running.

But justice was only beginning.

Because when federal investigators opened Elena’s archive, they found one final file.

A file Adrian had never expected.

Its title contained only two words.

May you like

ANTHONY MORETTI.

And inside was proof that Adrian’s father had been keeping one last secret from all of them.
