Chapter 19 - RICHARD BELL RETURNS

No one should survive being dead this many times.

Richard Bell entered family court using a cane.

Older than the video.

Thinner.

But alive.

Elena staggered toward him.

“Dad.”

Court security moved.

The judge raised a hand.

“Order.”

Elena stopped three feet away.

Richard looked at her with tears in his eyes.

“My girl.”

She slapped him.

Hard.

The sound echoed.

The judge closed her eyes briefly, perhaps reconsidering every career choice that led to this case.

Richard touched his cheek.

“I deserved that.”

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“Yes.”

“Sofia believed you were dead.”

“I know.”

“You recorded a message saying you were dead.”

“Technically, I said ‘if you are watching this, then I am dead.’”

Gabriel muttered, “I hate rich people.”

I agreed.

“Mr. Bell,” the judge said, “sit down before this becomes worse.”

He obeyed.

Adrian Kane remained near the attorneys.

Smiling.

I did not like that.

“Why are you with Kane?” I asked.

Richard’s expression changed.

“I’m not.”

Adrian stopped smiling.

Richard pointed at him.

“He brought me here against my wishes.”

Chaos.

Judge Ellis called security.

Adrian stepped backward.

His attorneys looked shocked.

He reached into his jacket.

I moved before security.

Tackled him.

A pistol slid across the floor.

Screams filled the courtroom.

Luca, waiting outside, later complained he missed everything.

Adrian was arrested.

Again.

Or seemingly.

Nothing in our lives remained simple.

The judge cleared the courtroom.

Only family, attorneys, and federal officials remained.

Richard Bell sat at the witness stand.

Alive.

“Elaborate,” Judge Ellis said.

Best word possible.

Richard sighed.

“Four months ago, I staged my death.”

“Why?”

“Someone was poisoning me.”

“Dr. Mercer?”

“No.”

Everyone froze.

Richard continued.

“Helen helped me simulate death.”

Of course.

I looked at Evelyn.

She looked ready to retire.

“Then who poisoned you?”

Richard looked at Maria.

She stiffened.

“Not Maria.”

Then Matteo.

“Not him either.”

“Who?”

Richard looked at Adrian, now handcuffed.

“Samuel Kane.”

Adrian’s dead brother.

“Why?”

“The Kane brothers had spent years protecting the network’s digital systems.”

Richard rubbed his chest.

“Samuel discovered Monarch.”

“And wanted it?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To sell control.”

“To whom?”

“Several foreign investment groups and criminal organizations.”

Gabriel whistled softly.

“Ambitious.”

Richard nodded.

“I learned of the poisoning early. Mercer helped me disappear while she fed Samuel false medical data.”

“So you weren’t dying of cancer?”

“I had cancer.”

He smiled.

“Still do.”

Elena’s anger softened.

“How long?”

“Doctors estimate months.”

She began crying.

Richard looked away.

“Why didn’t you come to me?”

“Because everyone near you was being watched.”

“You could have told me.”

“I have made many mistakes.”

Understatement.

Judge Ellis looked impatient.

“And the child?”

Richard’s eyes moved to Sofia.

“I created the trust to protect her.”

Sofia crossed her arms.

“It caused a lot of trouble.”

Richard almost smiled.

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you just leave me a normal amount of money?”

Gabriel nodded.

“Excellent question.”

Richard laughed softly.

“Because I was arrogant.”

At least one adult understood himself.

“I thought wealth could protect what I loved.”

Sofia looked around.

“It didn’t.”

“No.”

Richard’s eyes filled.

“It made you a target.”

The courtroom became quiet.

Then Richard said something none of us expected.

“I withdraw my guardianship petition.”

The judge raised an eyebrow.

“You filed it.”

“No.”

He looked at Adrian.

“Kane filed it using documents I signed under coercion.”

Adrian said nothing.

Richard continued.

“I do not want custody.”

“Why not?”

Richard looked at me.

“Because Sofia already has parents.”

My chest tightened.

“And because,” he added, “I am not safe.”

Judge Ellis studied him.

“Are any of you safe?”

No one answered.

She almost smiled.

After hours of testimony, the judge made a temporary ruling.

Sofia would remain with Elena and Gabriel under supervised protective residence.

My legal paternity would be recognized.

I would receive unrestricted family contact but temporary cohabitation required security review.

Not perfect.

But Sofia was not going to foster care.

When the judge asked her where she wanted to live, Sofia answered:

“With Mom, Dad, Papa, and Bear.”

Judge Ellis rubbed her forehead.

“I cannot issue a custody order for a dog.”

Sofia frowned.

“Why?”

Gabriel whispered, “Bureaucracy.”

Outside court, reporters waited.

Richard’s survival exploded across headlines.

Adrian Kane was taken into federal custody.

But before entering the vehicle, he looked at me.

“You think you won.”

I stepped closer.

“No.”

He smiled.

“Samuel wasn’t the only Kane.”

The door closed.

I turned to Evelyn.

“How many?”

She checked.

“One sister.”

“Name?”

“Rebecca Kane.”

“Occupation?”

Evelyn’s face changed.

“What?”

She looked at the screen.

“Family court psychologist.”

My stomach dropped.

The woman assigned to evaluate Sofia’s placement was Rebecca Kane.

She had already interviewed Sofia privately the previous afternoon.

We had allowed the enemy into the room with her.

“What did she ask?”

Sofia tried to remember.

“About where we were staying.”

Gabriel went pale.

The farmhouse.

“Did you tell her?”

“No.”

Relief.

“She asked about my grandparents.”

“Anything else?”

Sofia nodded.

“She asked if Grandpa ever gave me a code.”

Richard froze.

“What code?”

Sofia looked at him.

“The song.”

He went white.

“What song?”

She began humming.

A nursery melody.

Richard stared.

“Stop.”

Everyone did.

“What is it?” I asked.

Richard’s voice shook.

“Monarch’s final encryption key.”

Gabriel looked at him in disbelief.

“You hid a financial encryption key in a nursery song?”

“I wanted Sofia to remember it without knowing what it was.”

I wanted to strangle him.

Rebecca Kane knew enough to ask.

Which meant the Kane operation remained active.

“What does the key unlock?” I asked.

Richard looked at me.

“Not money.”

“Then what?”

He swallowed.

“The names of every person who ordered killings through the network.”

Maria went still.

“That archive was destroyed.”

“No.”

Richard looked at her sadly.

“I kept everything.”

Decades of murders.

Orders.

Payments.

Including ours.

Including mine.

Gabriel saw my expression.

“What?”

I looked at Richard.

“My name is in there.”

He did not answer.

He did not need to.

Sofia looked at me.

“Papa?”

I could lie.

Old Nico would.

Instead I said,

“Yes.”

She stared.

“What did you do?”

My throat tightened.

This was the moment I had feared more than prison.

Not losing power.

Losing how my daughter saw me.

“I hurt people.”

“How many?”

“I don’t know.”

Her face changed.

Not fear.

Disappointment.

Worse.

She stepped away.

I let her.

No excuses.

No manipulation.

Richard watched.

“That is why I kept the archive.”

I turned toward him.

“To blackmail me?”

“No.”

“To make sure someday all of us had to face what we had done.”

Sofia walked toward Elena.

She did not look back.

May you like

And I realized Richard Bell’s final weapon was not evidence.

It was truth.
