Chapter 15 - THE LAST CHOICE

Antonio lowered his weapon.

For the first time, he looked defeated.

Dominic's father stared at his son.

"You would destroy your own family?"

Dominic looked at Lily.

Then Sophia.

Then Elena.

"No."

He shook his head.

"I'm saving it."

Police rushed in.

Antonio surrendered.

Dominic's father was arrested.

The Black Ledger became evidence.

The Moretti empire collapsed within weeks.

Banks froze accounts.

Companies changed ownership.

Politicians resigned.

Investigations spread across the country.

And Dominic?

He walked away.

He sold the mansion.

Moved into a smaller house.

And learned how to make pancakes.

Badly.

Lily complained every morning.

"Too burnt."

Dominic nodded.

"I'm learning."

Sophia laughed.

"You've been saying that for months."

"I'll get better."

Elena watched from the kitchen.

For the first time, she saw Dominic without the armor.

No bodyguards.

No guns.

No empire.

Just a father trying to make breakfast for his daughters.

One afternoon, Lily asked him:

"Do you miss being powerful?"

Dominic thought about it.

"Sometimes."

"Why?"

"Because power made people afraid of me."

"Do you want people to be afraid?"

He looked at her.

"No."

"Then why miss it?"

Dominic smiled.

"I guess I don't."

Six months later, Lily returned to Fifth Avenue.

She stood at the exact place where she had found Dominic.

The city was still loud.

Still impatient.

People hurried past.

Nobody noticed her.

Sophia stood beside her.

"Why are we here?"

Lily smiled.

"Because this is where everything started."

Dominic stood behind them.

Elena held his hand.

Lily looked at the sidewalk.

"I was scared."

Dominic nodded.

"I know."

"But I stayed."

"You did."

"Would you have stayed?"

Dominic looked at her.

"I don't know."

Lily smiled.

"Then I saved you."

Dominic laughed.

"Yes."

She hugged him.

"And you saved me."

Dominic held her tightly.

For years, he had believed power meant controlling the world.

He finally understood.

Power was not making people fear you.

It was having someone small enough to hold your hand—

and strong enough to teach you how to live.

But as the family walked away, a black sedan stopped across the street.

A man inside lowered his newspaper.

He watched Dominic.

Then Lily.

Then Sophia.

He made a phone call.

"Confirm it."

A pause.

"Yes."

Another pause.

"The Moretti girls are both alive."

The man smiled.

"Then the second phase can begin."

EPILOGUE — THE LETTERThat evening, Lily found an envelope beneath her bedroom door.

There was no name.

No return address.

Only one sentence written across the front.

YOU THINK THE STORY ENDED.

Lily opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of her father as a young man.

Beside him stood another man.

Someone Lily had never seen.

On the back were four words.

ASK HIM ABOUT THIS.

Lily ran downstairs.

"Dad!"

Dominic looked up.

"What happened?"

She handed him the photograph.

His face changed immediately.

Elena saw it.

"What is it?"

Dominic didn't answer.

He stared at the man beside his younger self.

A man everyone believed had died thirty years ago.

His own grandfather.

The founder of the Moretti empire.

Dominic whispered:

"He's alive."

Elena went pale.

Lily looked between them.

"Who?"

Dominic slowly folded the photograph.

Then he looked toward the locked front door.

"Someone who should never have found us."

Outside, the streetlights flickered.

A black car waited at the end of the road.

And inside it, an old man smiled.

Because saving Dominic Moretti had changed Lily Carter's life.

But she had no idea yet—

her existence had changed the balance of an entire criminal empire.

And the most dangerous secret of all...

was still waiting to be uncovered.
