Chapter 9 - The House on Blackwater Road

Michael Vale survived.

Barely.

Once doctors stabilized him, federal prosecutors presented him with enough charges to guarantee decades in prison.

Kidnapping.

Attempted murder.

Weapons offenses.

Conspiracy.

His loyalty to his father weakened quickly.

Within forty-eight hours, Michael began talking.

Martin Vale owned a property that did not appear under his name.

A hunting lodge near Blackwater Road, hidden through three shell companies.

Police believed Victoria might be there.

More importantly, Michael believed the blue ledger was there too.

Ethan wanted to join the raid.

Detective Martinez refused.

“You’re a witness and a target.”

“My son was kidnapped.”

“Exactly why you’re staying away.”

Sarah supported Martinez.

Ethan looked betrayed.

“You too?”

“You pay security professionals for a reason.”

“I used to.”

“Then pay better ones.”

He stared at her.

She crossed her arms.

“I was just shot at. I get an opinion.”

That ended the argument.

At 4:15 a.m., tactical teams surrounded the Blackwater property.

Ethan watched through a secure video connection.

Sarah sat beside him.

Leo slept upstairs under guard.

The lodge looked dark.

No movement.

Teams entered.

One room.

Two.

Three.

Empty.

Then they reached the basement.

A steel door.

Locked from inside.

Agents breached it.

They found Martin Vale.

Alone.

He sat at a desk with a glass of whiskey.

He did not resist.

Detective Martinez entered behind the tactical team.

“Where is Victoria?”

Martin smiled.

“You’re late.”

“Where?”

“Gone.”

“Blue ledger?”

“Also gone.”

They searched the room.

Documents covered the desk.

Trust structures.

Insurance policies.

Medical records.

Rebecca’s photographs.

Detailed schedules of Ethan’s estate.

Martin had been planning the Cole family’s destruction for years.

Martinez looked at him.

“Why?”

Martin sipped his whiskey.

“Your mistake is assuming this was personal.”

“You helped murder a pregnant woman.”

“I advised clients.”

“Victoria?”

“A useful instrument.”

“Caleb?”

“A weak man who believed resentment made him intelligent.”

“Ethan?”

Martin smiled.

“His father built an empire on compromises and then had the nerve to act righteous when I expected compensation.”

“You stole sixty million dollars.”

“I preserved sixty million dollars from people who would have wasted it.”

Martinez stared.

“And Leo?”

Martin’s smile faded slightly.

“The child complicated everything.”

At the estate, Ethan’s hand tightened.

Sarah saw his knuckles whiten.

Martinez continued.

“Where is Victoria?”

Martin looked directly toward the body camera.

Almost as if he knew Ethan was watching.

“She understands something you don’t.”

“What?”

“People always protect the thing they love most.”

His smile returned.

“And that makes love wonderfully predictable.”

Sarah’s skin went cold.

She immediately stood.

“Leo.”

Ethan was already moving.

They ran upstairs.

Two guards stood outside Leo’s nursery.

Everything looked normal.

Ethan opened the door.

The crib was empty.

Sarah stopped breathing.

“What?”

One guard rushed in.

“He was here!”

Sarah looked around.

The window was closed.

No broken glass.

No sign of forced entry.

Then she heard it.

A faint sound from the adjoining bathroom.

Leo babbling.

She rushed inside.

A young female officer stood beside him.

“I moved him when I smelled smoke.”

Sarah looked toward the ceiling vent.

Thin smoke drifted through.

The fire alarm had not activated.

Ethan grabbed Leo.

“Evacuate the house.”

Guards moved immediately.

They carried Leo downstairs.

Smoke thickened near the east wing.

Then flames appeared behind the walls.

Someone had set a fire inside the ventilation system.

The estate’s suppression controls had been disabled.

Just like the cameras.

Just like the security system.

But how?

Graham was gone.

Michael was hospitalized.

Martin was in custody.

Victoria.

She was still close.

Firefighters arrived.

Everyone evacuated onto the lawn.

Sarah counted staff.

One missing.

A temporary kitchen worker hired two days earlier.

“Where is Anna?”

The chef looked around.

“She was inside.”

Police checked employment files.

There was no Anna.

The identification documents were false.

Security footage showed the woman arriving wearing glasses, dark hair and a kitchen uniform.

Detective Martinez received the image remotely.

She forwarded it.

Ethan stared.

Sarah stared.

The woman had changed her hair.

Changed her makeup.

Changed her posture.

But it was Victoria.

She had been inside the estate for two days.

Serving food.

Passing hallways.

Watching Leo.

Again.

Sarah felt physically sick.

“She was ten feet from him at breakfast.”

Ethan looked at the burning mansion.

Victoria had not been hiding from them.

She had returned to the one place everyone believed too secure for her to enter.

The fire department contained the blaze before it destroyed the main house.

But Rebecca’s old bedroom was heavily damaged.

Someone had specifically targeted it.

Sarah understood.

“She thought there was more evidence.”

Ethan nodded.

“She was destroying Rebecca’s room.”

Then a firefighter approached carrying a metal box.

“We found this inside the wall.”

Ethan stared.

The heat had blackened the exterior.

Sarah recognized Rebecca’s handwriting faintly visible on the side.

FOR ETHAN.

They opened it after investigators cleared the item.

Inside were three sealed letters.

A flash drive.

And a photograph of Rebecca with another woman.

Sarah looked at Ethan.

“Who is she?”

He stared.

“I don’t know.”

On the back, Rebecca had written:

Her name is Anna Vale. Martin’s daughter. Ask what happened to her.

Daniel researched immediately.

Anna Vale had died eight years earlier.

Official cause: accidental overdose.

But there was something strange.

She had worked at a Houston investment firm.

For William Hart.

Victoria’s former boyfriend.

One of the wealthy men connected to Victoria’s suspicious past.

Rebecca had linked Martin to Victoria through Martin’s dead daughter.

The story was bigger still.

The flash drive contained financial files and an audio recording.

Rebecca’s voice.

“I think Martin believes Victoria killed Anna.”

Ethan and Sarah listened.

“And I think he has been using her ever since.”

Rebecca continued.

“Not because he trusts her.”

A pause.

“Because he wants revenge.”

Sarah whispered, “Against Victoria?”

Rebecca’s recorded voice answered.

“Martin is helping Victoria destroy families, but he is also building a case around her. Every account. Every death. Every lie.”

Ethan frowned.

Rebecca continued.

“He wants Victoria to take the blame for everything, including the crimes he committed himself.”

Martin’s plan became clear.

He had manipulated Caleb.

Used Victoria.

Moved money.

Helped cause Rebecca’s death.

And eventually intended to leave Victoria holding all the evidence.

But Victoria must have discovered it.

That explained Caleb’s kidnapping.

Martin and Victoria’s alliance had collapsed.

And now both were trying to survive the other.

Then Sarah noticed the third letter.

Not Ethan’s name.

Not Daniel’s.

It said:

SARAH MILLER.

Sarah froze.

“That’s me.”

Ethan handed it to her.

She opened the envelope.

Rebecca’s handwriting filled one page.

Sarah began reading silently.

Then tears filled her eyes.

“What does it say?” Ethan asked.

Sarah looked at him.

“She knew.”

“Knew what?”

Sarah handed him the letter.

Rebecca had written:

Sarah, if Ethan is reading this with you, then something has probably gone terribly wrong. You once told me that a house is only safe when somebody notices the small sounds. I trust you because you notice. If Leo ever needs someone to hear him when I cannot, I hope it is you.

Ethan stopped reading.

Sarah wiped her face.

Rebecca had trusted her before Leo was even born.

Then Ethan’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Victoria’s voice.

“Did you enjoy Rebecca’s letters?”

Everyone froze.

Ethan’s eyes went toward the burning house.

“Where are you?”

Victoria laughed.

“Close enough.”

Police began tracing the call.

Ethan kept her talking.

“You lost.”

“No.”

“Martin is in custody.”

“I know.”

“Caleb is alive.”

“For now.”

“You failed to kill Leo.”

Silence.

Then Victoria spoke quietly.

“I never needed Leo dead tonight.”

Ethan’s stomach dropped.

“What did you need?”

“A distraction.”

Sarah turned.

The house.

The fire.

The police.

The guards.

Everyone’s attention focused inward.

Victoria continued.

“You should call your attorney.”

Ethan looked at Daniel.

Daniel’s phone was already ringing.

He answered.

His face went white.

“What?”

Everyone stared.

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

“Someone just initiated an emergency transfer from the Cole Family Trust.”

Ethan frowned.

“How much?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Everything.”

More than two billion dollars.

Victoria hadn’t returned to the estate to kill Leo.

She had returned to steal the empire while they were protecting him.

May you like

And the authorization used to approve the transfer belonged to one person.

Caleb Cole.
