Chapter 10 - WHAT THE LITTLE GIRL CHANGED

The Bellini empire began collapsing within weeks.

Accounts were frozen.

Companies were investigated.

People who had spent years hiding behind wealth suddenly discovered that money could not buy silence forever.

Marco cooperated with investigators.

Lucas did too.

Sofia testified.

Elena stayed out of the spotlight.

She wanted only one thing.

A normal life.

For Mia.

But normal was difficult after everything they had learned.

One evening, Elena sat on the balcony of the new apartment Marco had arranged for them.

Mia was drawing at the table.

Lucas stood in the kitchen making pancakes.

Marco arrived carrying groceries.

"You bought too much."

Lucas looked over.

"That's because you don't know how to shop."

"I bought what Mom asked for."

"Mom asked for strawberries."

"I bought strawberries."

"You bought enough for fifty people."

Marco shrugged.

"I don't know how many strawberries children eat."

Mia looked up.

"Lots."

Everyone laughed.

For a moment, it felt ordinary.

Then Mia looked at Marco.

"Uncle Marco?"

"Yes?"

"Are you still scary?"

Lucas laughed.

Marco sighed.

"Apparently."

Mia smiled.

"You're not."

Marco looked surprised.

"Why?"

"Because scary people don't carry pink backpacks."

Everyone looked at him.

Marco glanced down.

He was holding Mia's bright pink backpack.

He had forgotten it was in his hand.

Lucas started laughing.

Elena covered her mouth.

Marco shook his head.

"Nobody saw that."

Mia giggled.

"I saw."

Marco handed her the backpack.

"Traitor."

She hugged his leg.

He froze.

Then slowly placed one hand on her curls.

Elena watched them.

Something inside her finally relaxed.

Five years of fear.

Five years of uncertainty.

Five years of raising Mia alone.

It was ending.

But that night, after Mia fell asleep, Elena found Sofia sitting in the kitchen.

Sofia held an old photograph.

"She saved my life," Sofia said.

"Who?"

"Mia."

Elena smiled.

"She was just being kind."

"That's what makes it powerful."

Sofia looked at her.

"Do you remember the day we met?"

"Of course."

"I almost died that day."

"You almost fainted."

Sofia smiled.

"Same thing."

Elena laughed softly.

Then Sofia became serious.

"I owe you something."

"What?"

"The truth."

She placed the photograph on the table.

It was Lucas as a baby.

Beside him was another child.

A little girl.

Elena stared.

"Who is she?"

Sofia's eyes filled with tears.

"Your mother."

Elena froze.

"What?"

"Your mother knew the Bellini family."

"No."

"She worked for us."

Elena stood.

"That's impossible."

"She left after discovering what your grandfather was doing."

Elena's hands trembled.

"Why didn't she ever tell me?"

"Because she was afraid."

"Afraid of what?"

Sofia looked toward the hallway.

"Your family was connected to ours long before you met Lucas."

Elena couldn't breathe.

"You mean..."

Sofia nodded.

"Your mother helped Lucas escape."

Elena sat down.

The entire story she had believed about her childhood began unraveling.

Then Sofia whispered:

"And there's something else."

"What?"

"Your mother didn't die from an accident."

Elena stared at her.

Sofia lowered her voice.

"She was murdered."

The room went silent.

From upstairs came Mia's sleepy voice.

"Mommy?"

Elena looked toward the stairs.

Then back at Sofia.

Her entire life had just changed again.

And this time, the enemy wasn't coming for Mia.

It was coming for Elena.
