Chapter 14 - THE FATHER SHE NEVER KNEW

They found Elena's father two days later.

Not in New York.

Not in a prison.

Not in hiding.

He was living in a small town in Vermont under another name.

Elena stood outside the house for several minutes before knocking.

Her hand shook.

Marco stood behind her.

"You don't have to do this alone."

"I know."

She knocked.

An elderly man opened the door.

He stared at her.

His face collapsed.

"Elena."

She couldn't speak.

He reached toward her.

She stepped back.

"You knew who I was."

"Every day."

"Why didn't you come for me?"

His eyes filled with tears.

"Because they threatened your life."

"Who?"

"Your grandfather."

Elena shook her head.

"I spent twenty-eight years thinking you were dead."

"I know."

"Do you know what that did to me?"

He lowered his head.

"I'm sorry."

She wanted to hate him.

Instead, she saw an old man who had spent decades living with regret.

"Did you love Mom?"

He nodded.

"More than anything."

"Did you know about me?"

"Yes."

"Did you know she was pregnant?"

"Yes."

"Then why didn't you stop them?"

His voice broke.

"I tried."

He invited them inside.

On the wall were photographs.

Elena as a baby.

Her mother.

Lucas.

Sofia.

The Bellini family.

Her entire life was displayed in pictures she had never seen.

Her father handed her a box.

"Your mother left this."

Elena opened it.

Inside was a letter.

My darling Elena,

If you ever find your father, forgive him if you can.

He didn't abandon us.

He tried to save us.

Elena began crying.

Her father sat beside her.

"I loved your mother until the day she died."

"What happened to her?"

He hesitated.

"She discovered the trust."

"The Bellini trust?"

"Yes."

"Why was it so important?"

"Because it wasn't just money."

He opened another file.

"It was evidence."

Elena stared.

"The fortune was created to fund witnesses, investigators, and families who escaped organized crime."

She looked at him.

"Grandfather built it?"

"Your grandfather's father did."

"And Mia inherited it?"

"Yes."

Her father looked toward Mia.

"Your daughter is the key to keeping it alive."

Mia walked over.

"Grandpa?"

The old man looked at her.

Tears filled his eyes.

"Yes, sweetheart."

"Do you like pancakes?"

He laughed.

"I do."

"Uncle Lucas makes bad ones."

Lucas protested from the kitchen.

"I heard that."

Everyone laughed.

For the first time, Elena felt something she hadn't felt in years.

Peace.

But it didn't last.

A car stopped outside.

Marco looked through the window.

Three black SUVs.

His expression hardened.

"Everyone stay inside."

A man stepped out.

Nathaniel Cross.

Alive.

He walked toward the house.

Marco moved Elena and Mia behind him.

Nathaniel raised his hands.

"I'm not here to fight."

Marco didn't lower his weapon.

"Then why are you here?"

Nathaniel looked at Elena.

"To tell her the truth."

"What truth?"

Nathaniel's expression was grim.

"Your mother didn't die because of the Bellinis."

Elena froze.

"Then who killed her?"

Nathaniel looked at her father.

"He did."

Elena turned.

Her father went pale.

"No."

Nathaniel continued.

"Your father made a deal to protect you."

Elena stared at the old man.

"Is that true?"

He closed his eyes.

"I never meant for her to die."

Elena stepped backward.

The man who had spent twenty-eight years missing from her life was suddenly at the center of the worst secret she had ever known.

Nathaniel turned toward Marco.

"Your family wasn't the only one lying."

Marco asked:

"Who else?"

Nathaniel looked at Elena.

"Her mother."

Elena whispered:

"What?"

"She wasn't the innocent woman you believed."

Then Nathaniel handed Elena a final file.

"Read it."

Inside was a photograph.

Her mother.

Standing beside a man Elena had never seen.

On the back were four words:

Mia was never an accident.

May you like

Elena looked at her daughter.

And realized the truth had one final layer.
