Chapter 15 - THE MAN WHO CHOSE HIS FAMILY

The federal agents entered.

Weapons raised.

Nobody moved.

Thomas Hayes stepped forward.

“Gabriel Moretti.”

I looked at him.

“Yes?”

“Your empire is over.”

I looked at Daniel.

Then Isabella.

Lucia.

Elena.

Vincent.

For the first time in my life, the word empire didn't matter.

“Good.”

Thomas seemed surprised.

“You're not going to fight?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because my children deserve a life without guns.”

Daniel held my hand.

Isabella stood beside me.

Lucia leaned against her.

Elena was crying.

Vincent lowered his weapon.

I turned to Matteo.

He looked exhausted.

“You coming?”

He stared at me.

“You'd let me?”

“You're my brother.”

“I tried to kill you.”

“You're still my brother.”

He looked away.

For a long moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he handed his weapon to Thomas.

“I'll testify.”

Thomas nodded.

The arrests began.

The Black Ledger collapsed within hours.

Politicians resigned.

Bank accounts were frozen.

Companies were seized.

People who had spent decades believing themselves untouchable suddenly discovered that secrets only stay powerful when nobody knows them.

My name appeared on every news channel.

Some called me a criminal.

Others called me a victim.

None of it mattered.

Because six months later, Daniel was running through a backyard in Connecticut.

Laughing.

Healthy.

Alive.

His heart surgery had been successful.

Isabella was sitting on the porch.

Lucia was drawing beside her.

Elena stood near the kitchen window.

She had quit the hospital.

I had offered her money.

She refused.

So I offered her a job.

She laughed.

“You don't own me.”

“I know.”

“What kind of job?”

“Head of security.”

She stared at me.

“You're serious?”

“I need someone who can threaten me with a mop.”

She smiled.

“I'll consider it.”

Vincent walked onto the porch.

“Boss.”

I looked at him.

“Don't call me that.”

He grinned.

“Old habits.”

He handed me a folder.

“What is it?”

“The final account transfer.”

I opened it.

Thirty-two billion dollars.

Every cent legally placed into trusts for Daniel and Lucia.

I closed the folder.

“Destroy it.”

Vincent stared.

“You don't want the money?”

“I want my children to choose what their lives become.”

He nodded.

Then Daniel ran toward me.

“Dad!”

I dropped the folder.

He jumped into my arms.

I held him tightly.

“What's wrong?”

“Nothing.”

He grinned.

“I just wanted a hug.”

I laughed.

Then he whispered:

“Dad?”

“Yeah?”

“Are we safe now?”

I looked toward Isabella.

Then Elena.

Then Lucia.

Then Vincent.

I looked at the peaceful sky.

“Yes.”

Daniel smiled.

“Good.”

That night, I stood alone on the porch.

For eleven years, I had believed power meant having enough guns, money and men to protect the people I loved.

I was wrong.

Power was being willing to lose everything to keep them free.

Behind me, I heard footsteps.

Elena.

She stood beside me.

“You're thinking too much.”

“Occupational hazard.”

She smiled.

“Do you miss it?”

“The empire?”

“Yes.”

I looked at the house.

Daniel was laughing inside.

Lucia was chasing Isabella around the living room.

Vincent was arguing with the television.

I smiled.

“No.”

“Not even a little?”

I shook my head.

“I spent my entire life trying to become the most feared man in New York.”

“And now?”

I looked at the broken mop handle hanging in the garage.

I had kept it.

“Now I'm just a father.”

Elena smiled.

“That's harder.”

I laughed.

“You're probably right.”

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

Silence.

Then a man's voice whispered:

“Gabriel Moretti.”

My smile disappeared.

“Who is this?”

The voice laughed.

“You thought the Black Ledger was the end?”

I stood.

“What do you want?”

“Nothing.”

A pause.

“I just wanted you to know…”

My eyes moved toward the house.

“…your father had another secret.”

The line went dead.

I looked through the window.

Daniel was laughing.

Safe.

Alive.

But suddenly, every instinct I'd spent years trying to bury woke up again.

I knew that voice.

It belonged to someone who should have been dead.

Someone who had been erased from every file.

Someone my father feared more than anyone.

I whispered one name.

“Rafael…”

Behind me, Elena stopped breathing.

“Gabriel?”

I turned.

She was staring at me.

“What?”

She whispered:

“Rafael isn't the one who called.”

“Then who?”

Her face went pale.

“The man who taught my father everything.”

A car stopped at the end of the street.

The headlights went off.

The driver's door opened.

A man stepped into the darkness.

And for the first time since I left the mafia…

I reached for a gun.

May you like

Because some wars don't end.

They only wait for you to believe you're finally safe.
