Chapter 11 - THE NIGHT DANIEL WAS BORN

Isabella finally told us everything.

Six years earlier, she had discovered the Black Ledger.

She found accounts.

Names.

Payments.

Judges.

Politicians.

And one document that terrified her.

A contract for Daniel.

My father had arranged for my unborn child to become the legal beneficiary of several offshore trusts.

But there was a condition.

Daniel had to remain hidden until he turned eighteen.

If anyone outside the network learned about the inheritance, the trusts would be seized.

My father had planned everything.

Even Daniel's medical condition.

“He knew about his heart defect?” I asked.

Isabella nodded.

“He paid doctors to keep it quiet.”

I felt sick.

“He wanted everyone afraid for Daniel.”

“Yes.”

“So I'd become protective.”

“Yes.”

“And when Daniel was born?”

“Your father ordered me killed.”

I stared at her.

“How did you survive?”

“Rafael Cruz.”

Elena looked down.

Her father.

“He helped me escape.”

“He was supposed to be dead.”

“He wasn't.”

I looked at Elena.

“Where is he?”

She shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Then the warehouse door opened.

Everyone raised weapons.

A man walked in.

Older.

Gray hair.

Scarred face.

Elena dropped her gun.

“Dad?”

The man stopped.

“Elena.”

She ran to him.

They embraced.

I stared.

Rafael Cruz.

Alive.

My father's oldest friend.

The man I had spent fourteen years believing dead.

He looked at me.

“Gabriel.”

I raised my gun.

“You have a lot of explaining to do.”

“I know.”

“Why did you disappear?”

“To keep Isabella and the children alive.”

“You let me believe my father was murdered by outsiders.”

“Your father was murdered.”

“By whom?”

Rafael's eyes darkened.

“By his own son.”

The room went silent.

I lowered my weapon.

“What?”

Rafael looked at me.

“Your father was killed because someone inside the family betrayed him.”

“Who?”

He didn't answer.

Then he looked at Vincent.

Vincent's expression changed.

Rafael continued:

“Your father had two sons.”

I felt my blood freeze.

“I don't have a brother.”

“You did.”

My entire childhood flashed through my mind.

A locked room.

A second bedroom.

A name nobody spoke.

I remembered asking my mother about it once.

She slapped me.

Then told me never to ask again.

“His name?”

Rafael said:

“Matteo.”

I stepped backward.

“Matteo Moretti died as a child.”

“No.”

Rafael shook his head.

“He survived.”

“Where is he?”

Rafael looked at me.

“Adrian Voss.”

Nobody breathed.

I understood.

The man hunting my son wasn't simply my enemy.

He was my brother.

And he had spent years building an empire designed to destroy mine.

Then Rafael added:

“He believes you stole everything that belonged to him.”

I whispered:

“I never knew he existed.”

“I know.”

“Then why did my father choose me?”

Rafael looked at Daniel.

“Because you were the son he trusted.”

I stared at my child.

Then the warehouse lights went out.

A voice came through the darkness.

“Not anymore.”

Adrian Voss stepped from the shadows.

He looked at me.

“Hello, little brother.”
