Chapter 13 - WHAT MY FATHER LEFT BEHIND

The final account contained no money.

It contained letters.

Hundreds of them.

My father had written one for each year of Sophie's childhood.

He had never been allowed to see her.

But he had watched from a distance.

He knew her favorite color.

Her favorite books.

The first time she lost a tooth.

The day she started school.

The shoes.

The birthdays.

Everything.

I sat on the floor reading until sunrise.

Sophie sat beside me.

"Did he really know me?"

I nodded.

"He knew everything."

She smiled sadly.

"Then why didn't he come?"

I couldn't answer.

My mother did.

"Because I was too afraid."

Sophie looked at her.

"You were scared?"

"Yes."

"Of what?"

"Of losing Michael."

Sophie thought about it.

Then she said:

"But you lost everybody anyway."

My mother began crying.

It was the simplest sentence.

And the cruelest.

She reached for Sophie.

"You're right."

Sophie allowed herself to be hugged.

For the first time, I saw my mother not as the villain in my childhood.

But as a broken woman who had made terrible choices because she was terrified.

That didn't erase what she had done.

But it explained it.

Weeks passed.

The federal investigation grew.

Jonathan testified.

My mother confessed.

Daniel was charged.

The board resigned.

Harrison Development survived.

But I changed the company.

I sold the properties tied to the old scandals.

Returned land where possible.

Created scholarships.

Established housing funds.

And placed the Harrison Family Trust under independent supervision.

But the biggest change happened inside my home.

For the first time in my life, the apartment wasn't quiet.

There were children's shoes by the door.

Crayons on the table.

Laughter in the hallway.

Sophie moved into the guest room.

Marcus refused to leave the city.

My mother entered a treatment program.

And Anna...

Anna was still fighting.

Her doctors discovered an experimental treatment.

It wasn't guaranteed.

But it gave her time.

One evening, Sophie came running into my office.

"Michael!"

"What?"

"Mom wants you."

I rushed to the hospital.

Anna was sitting up.

She smiled.

"I have something for you."

She handed me a small box.

Inside was a pair of children's shoes.

Old.

Worn.

The original pair Sophie had been wearing when I met her.

I stared at them.

"Why?"

"Because those shoes changed everything."

She smiled.

"You thought you were buying Sophie shoes."

I laughed softly.

"I was."

"No."

Anna shook her head.

"You were buying yourself a family."

I looked at Sophie.

She was standing beside the window.

Then Anna whispered:

"There's one last thing."

I frowned.

"What?"

She looked at Marcus.

Then at me.

"Richard wasn't only protecting Sophie."

My heart stopped.

"He was protecting someone else."

"Who?"

Anna's eyes filled with tears.

"The person who helped him hide the trust."

"Who?"

She smiled.

"Your father's first love."

May you like

I stared at her.

"She's still alive."
