Chapter 14 - The Emergency Order

Rosa reached Lily before anyone else.

Her daughter was sitting cross-legged on the classroom rug, teaching a little boy how to sign turtle. When Rosa entered, Lily looked up and smiled.

That smile nearly broke her.

Rosa crossed the room and pulled Lily into her arms.

Lily stiffened, surprised.

Mama scared?

Rosa tried to answer, but her hands shook too badly.

Alessandro appeared in the doorway behind her, followed by Miguel, Clara, and Enzo. The teachers had already gone pale. They knew enough now to understand that when Alessandro Moretti entered a classroom with that look on his face, the danger was not theoretical.

“Take the other children to the north playroom,” Alessandro said.

The teachers obeyed.

Lily watched the room empty, confused.

Party over? she signed.

Rosa held her tighter.

Before Rosa could respond, the front hall erupted in voices.

“Mrs. Delgado?” a woman called. “This is Agent Melissa Grant with Child Welfare Services. We need to speak with you immediately.”

Rosa felt rage push through fear.

She stood with Lily in her arms and walked into the hall.

Agent Grant waited near the entrance, flanked by two uniformed officers and a man in a gray suit who looked more lawyer than government. She had sharp eyes, neat hair, and the exhausted face of someone who had knocked on too many doors where children cried.

“I am Rosa Delgado,” Rosa said.

Agent Grant looked at Lily. Something human flickered across her face, then disappeared behind procedure.

“We have an emergency order authorizing temporary removal of Lily Delgado pending investigation into child endangerment.”

“No,” Rosa said.

The word was not loud.

It did not need to be.

Agent Grant opened the folder. “Mrs. Delgado, multiple reports allege that your daughter has been repeatedly exposed to organized criminal activity, weapons, kidnapping attempts, and unsafe environments connected to Mr. Alessandro Moretti.”

Rosa laughed once, cold and disbelieving. “Multiple reports from whom? Vivian Vale?”

The man in the gray suit stepped forward. “The source is confidential.”

Alessandro moved slightly.

The man stepped back.

Agent Grant’s eyes flicked to Alessandro. “Mr. Moretti, this matter does not concern you.”

“It concerns a child standing in my house.”

“That is exactly the problem.”

Rosa turned to Alessandro. “Do not speak for me.”

He went still.

She looked back at Agent Grant. “My daughter was in danger because she witnessed a crime. Powerful people tried to silence her. Now those same people are using your office to take her from me.”

Agent Grant’s expression did not change. “That may be your belief, but the court has issued an order.”

Miguel rolled his wheelchair forward. “Then the court is wrong.”

The gray-suited man looked at him with faint contempt. “And you are?”

“Miguel Delgado. Lily’s father.”

Agent Grant blinked.

The folder shifted in her hands.

“Lily’s father is listed as deceased.”

“I got better,” Miguel said.

Under any other circumstances, Rosa might have laughed.

No one did.

Agent Grant looked unsettled now. “Mr. Delgado, your status will need verification.”

Alessandro turned to Enzo. “Call Judge Mercer.”

“No,” Rosa said sharply.

Everyone looked at her.

She faced Alessandro. “No private judge. No favors. No quiet room where men trade names over my daughter’s life. If they want court, we go to court. Publicly.”

Alessandro’s eyes held hers.

Then he nodded once.

“Publicly.”

The emergency hearing happened four hours later.

News vans were already outside the courthouse when they arrived. Vivian’s leak had worked. Reporters shouted questions as Rosa carried Lily through the crowd.

“Mrs. Delgado, did you bring your child to a mafia event?”

“Is it true Lily was kidnapped because of your connection to Alessandro Moretti?”

“Are you secretly related to the Vale family?”

Rosa kept walking.

Lily buried her face in Rosa’s neck, overwhelmed by flashing cameras she could not hear but could feel in every body pressing close.

Inside, the courtroom was packed.

Agent Grant sat at one table. Rosa, Miguel, and their attorney sat at the other. Alessandro sat behind them, not in front, not beside, exactly where Rosa had told him to sit.

For once, he obeyed.

The judge, a tired woman named Evelyn Carter, read the emergency petition with a frown.

“The court recognizes the severity of the allegations,” she said. “Mrs. Delgado, do you understand why the state is concerned?”

Rosa stood.

“Yes, Your Honor. I understand that my daughter is deaf, small, and easy for powerful adults to discuss as if she is not a person.”

A murmur moved through the courtroom.

The judge looked over her glasses.

Rosa continued, “I understand that she witnessed attempted murder. I understand she was targeted because she told the truth. I understand that instead of arresting every person who tried to harm her, someone filed paperwork to punish her mother.”

Agent Grant lowered her eyes.

The gray-suited man stood. “Objection. Emotional speculation.”

The judge snapped, “Sit down, Mr. Vale.”

Rosa froze.

Vale.

The man in gray was Vale counsel.

Of course.

Alessandro leaned forward slightly.

The judge’s eyes sharpened too. “Counsel, you failed to disclose your connection to the Vale family.”

The man stiffened. “The firm represents many clients.”

“And today it represents cowardice,” Miguel said.

The judge banged her gavel, but several people in the gallery smiled.

Then Lily moved.

She slipped from Rosa’s arms and stood beside the table, small in her yellow shoes, holding Hopper.

The courtroom quieted.

Lily looked at the judge.

Then she signed.

Rosa’s eyes filled.

The interpreter spoke aloud.

“I saw the pretty lady put bad in the glass. I told. Bad people took me. Mama came. Papa came. Mr. Moretti listened.”

Lily paused.

Then she signed again.

“Do not take me from Mama because bad people are mad.”

Agent Grant’s face crumpled for half a second.

The judge was silent.

Then she closed the folder.

“This emergency order is denied.”

Rosa sagged.

Miguel covered his face.

Alessandro closed his eyes.

The judge continued, “Further, I am referring this petition for investigation due to apparent conflict of interest and possible misuse of state resources.”

Vale counsel turned pale.

Outside the courtroom, reporters surged again.

This time, Rosa stopped.

She turned to the cameras, Lily on her hip, Miguel beside her.

“My daughter is not evidence,” Rosa said. “She is not leverage. She is not a headline. She is a child who told the truth when adults were too afraid to say it.”

Then she walked away.

At the courthouse steps, a teenage courier bumped into Alessandro and vanished into the crowd.

Enzo caught him within seconds, but the envelope had already been delivered.

Alessandro opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

Miguel in his hospital bed at Whitecedar.

On the back, someone had written:

You saved the wrong witness.

Rosa read the words and felt Miguel’s hand tighten around hers.

May you like

Beneath the message was another line.

Bring Rosa to St. Agnes by midnight, or the father disappears again.
