Chapter 10 - THE HOUSE GOES DARK

Adrian drove faster than Grace had imagined possible.

She sat in the passenger seat this time.

There was no argument about separate cars.

Not after Nina's call.

Adrian kept one hand on the wheel and one on his phone.

Police were already headed toward Whitmore House.

So was private security.

“Slow down,” Grace said.

“No.”

“Getting us killed won't help Nina.”

His jaw tightened.

But he eased off the accelerator.

Five minutes later his phone rang.

Unknown number.

Adrian answered through the car speakers.

“Hello?”

Malcolm's voice filled the Bentley.

“Turn around.”

Adrian's face changed.

Grace went cold.

“Where is Nina?”

“Safe.”

“I want to hear her.”

“No.”

Adrian's voice became deadly calm.

“If you hurt anyone in that house—”

“You still think threats solve everything.”

Grace saw Adrian flinch.

Malcolm continued.

“I learned that from you.”

“What do you want?”

“What I've always wanted.”

“Money?”

Malcolm laughed.

“You think every betrayal is about money.”

“What else is there?”

“Recognition.”

Adrian's eyes hardened.

“For fifteen years I stood beside you.”

“You were paid extremely well.”

“Exactly.”

Malcolm's laugh became bitter.

“To you, every human relationship is a transaction.”

Grace looked at Adrian.

His grip tightened around the steering wheel.

Malcolm continued.

“I fixed disasters before you knew they existed. I kept investors calm. I kept your father's old enemies away. I made sure people believed Adrian Whitmore was always the smartest man in the room.”

“What does that have to do with stealing?”

“You never saw me.”

Grace felt the words.

Because she had said something similar without saying it directly.

Adrian stared ahead.

“So you stole from me because your feelings were hurt?”

“No.”

Malcolm's tone sharpened.

“I took what I built.”

“You built none of it.”

“I built you.”

Silence.

Grace watched trees whip past the windows.

Adrian finally spoke.

“Where is Nina?”

“She's fine.”

“And the other employees?”

“Most left.”

“Most?”

Malcolm didn't answer.

“What are you doing at my house?”

“Taking insurance.”

“What insurance?”

“The emergency key.”

Adrian's face tightened.

Grace understood immediately.

Money.

A lot of it.

Adrian said, “The key is useless without biometric verification.”

“Yours.”

Grace looked at him sharply.

Malcolm chuckled.

“You forgot how much personal data your company stores.”

Adrian's expression changed.

“What did you do?”

“I don't need your hand, Adrian.”

A pause.

“Just enough of your identity.”

The call ended.

Grace said, “What does that mean?”

“I don't know.”

That frightened her more than any answer.

They arrived at Whitmore House twelve minutes later.

Police vehicles blocked the main gate.

Adrian jumped out.

An officer stopped him.

“Mr. Whitmore.”

“My employees are inside.”

“We're clearing the residence.”

“Where's Nina Alvarez?”

“We have eighteen staff accounted for.”

“There were twenty-three this morning.”

“Some went home.”

Grace interrupted.

“Carlos?”

The officer checked.

“Carlos Mendoza is outside.”

Grace exhaled.

“Nina?”

“Not yet.”

Adrian moved toward the house.

“Sir, you can't enter.”

“It's my home.”

“Right now it's an active scene.”

Adrian almost exploded.

Grace touched his arm.

He stopped.

A second officer approached.

“We found one person.”

Adrian turned.

“Who?”

“Female employee. Pantry.”

Grace's heart dropped.

“Nina?”

The officer nodded.

“She's alive.”

Grace closed her eyes.

Adrian exhaled.

“What happened?”

“Locked inside. Shaken, no obvious injuries.”

Minutes later Nina emerged beneath a blanket.

Grace ran to her.

Nina hugged her tightly.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“He took my phone.”

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

Adrian approached.

Nina looked at him.

“What happened?”

“I was in the hall,” she said.

“A man came in through the study.”

“Malcolm?”

“I've seen him before with you.”

Adrian nodded.

“He asked where your private safe was.”

“And?”

“I said I didn't know.”

“Good.”

“He didn't believe me.”

Grace squeezed her hand.

“He locked me in the pantry.”

Adrian's voice softened.

“Did he threaten you?”

Nina hesitated.

“Yes.”

Adrian went still.

“What did he say?”

“That if I screamed, he'd tell Lydia where my son went to school.”

Grace felt rage.

Even with Lydia detained, Malcolm knew exactly which fear to use.

“He left fifteen minutes ago,” Nina continued.

“Did he take anything?”

“A black case.”

Adrian's face changed.

“The key.”

He turned to police.

“Track every road camera.”

An officer nodded.

Adrian looked toward the house.

The front windows were dark.

“What happened to the power?”

“Main panel was manually shut down.”

They entered only after officers cleared the rooms.

The study was destroyed.

Drawers open.

Glass broken.

Safe door hanging wide.

Adrian walked inside.

Grace followed.

A photograph had fallen from a shelf.

An older woman standing beside a teenage Adrian.

Grace picked it up.

“Your mother?”

“Grandmother.”

“She looks kind.”

“She was.”

Adrian looked at the empty safe.

“She would've hated who I became.”

Grace said nothing.

“That's not where you're supposed to tell me I'm wrong?”

“No.”

He almost laughed.

Police collected evidence.

One detective approached.

“Mr. Whitmore, we need to ask about the emergency access device.”

Adrian explained.

The detective frowned.

“How much can it access?”

“Potentially hundreds of millions.”

Grace stared.

“Hundreds?”

“Emergency reserves and short-term liquidity accounts.”

“Can you disable it?”

“We're trying.”

Adrian called Whitmore Global's cybersecurity chief.

No answer.

Then corporate security called.

“Sir, we have a serious problem.”

“What?”

“Malcolm accessed the building remotely twelve minutes ago.”

“How?”

“Executive credentials.”

“Disable them.”

“We did.”

“Then?”

“He triggered a data release.”

Adrian's stomach dropped.

“What data?”

“We don't know yet.”

Grace watched his face.

The security chief continued.

“But several journalists just contacted communications.”

Adrian stepped away.

“About what?”

A pause.

“Your undercover experiment.”

Grace went still.

“What?”

The voice continued.

“They have photos.”

Adrian looked at Grace.

“Photos of what?”

“You dressed as a homeless man.”

His face drained.

“And Grace Miller.”

Grace's heart sank.

The voice continued.

“Someone leaked security footage from the gate.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

Then the worst part came.

“The headline is already spreading.”

“What headline?”

The chief hesitated.

“Billionaire Humiliates Struggling Maid in Secret Loyalty Test.”

Grace stared at Adrian.

Outside, beyond the estate gates, the first news van arrived.

Then another.

May you like

And another.

By nightfall, the entire world would know what Adrian Whitmore had done.
