Chapter 4 - Box 317

By nine that morning, the blizzard had weakened enough for downtown roads to reopen.

Nathan did not wait.

Sheriff Reeves drove.

A deputy followed.

First Cascade Bank opened forty minutes early after Daniel explained the situation to its regional manager.

Nathan stood inside the marble lobby holding Sarah’s bracelet.

The small hidden key fit Box 317 perfectly.

For one terrible second, nothing happened.

Then the lock turned.

The manager stepped away.

“This room is private.”

Daniel remained near the door.

Nathan pulled the metal box from the wall.

It was heavier than expected.

His hands shook as he placed it on the table.

“Ready?” Daniel asked.

“No.”

Nathan opened it anyway.

Inside sat seven years of Sarah’s life.

Folders.

Photographs.

Flash drives.

Receipts.

Medical records.

Copies of police reports.

Nathan picked up the first folder.

2019.

Inside were three letters addressed to him.

All returned.

Another folder.

2020.

Five letters.

2021.

Eight.

2022.

Four.

He stopped counting.

Every envelope contained a rejection he had never sent.

Some said:

Recipient refuses contact.

Others:

Please do not write again.

One had a handwritten message supposedly from Nathan.

You chose Marcus. Live with it.

Nathan stared at the words.

“That isn’t my handwriting.”

Daniel photographed it.

Nathan opened another folder.

Bank records.

Sarah’s inheritance account.

Withdrawals.

Large ones.

$85,000.

$120,000.

$300,000.

Each authorized by a signature resembling Sarah’s.

Then came Sarah’s own handwriting.

I did not authorize this transaction.

Another.

Marcus says William told him Nathan approved it.

Another.

Bank refuses to speak with me because documents show Marcus has power of attorney. I never signed one.

Nathan felt ill.

The next folder contained police reports.

Broken wrist.

Domestic disturbance.

Property destruction.

Harassment.

Each complaint had been withdrawn.

Sarah had written notes beside several.

Marcus said he would take Lily.

William said Nathan would testify I was unstable.

Nathan dropped the page.

“What?”

Daniel took it.

Nathan read the next line.

William says Nathan has medical contacts who will say I’m mentally unfit. I know Nathan is angry with me, but I cannot believe he would do this.

Nathan sat down.

His name had been used as a weapon.

Marcus had not merely convinced Sarah that Nathan disliked her.

He had convinced her Nathan might help take away her child.

Daniel’s voice was hard.

“Keep going.”

Nathan opened a smaller envelope.

Inside was an audio recorder.

The battery was dead.

Daniel bagged it for evidence.

Another envelope contained a USB drive.

The label read:

If anything happens to me.

Nathan stared.

Then he saw a legal document beneath it.

Life insurance.

Sarah had taken out a policy.

Beneficiary:

Lily Carter.

Alternate trustee:

Nathan Pierce.

Nathan’s chest tightened.

Even believing he hated her, Sarah had named him.

Another document followed.

Temporary guardianship instructions for all children.

Again:

Nathan Pierce.

Daniel looked at him.

“She trusted you.”

Nathan looked down.

“No.”

“What?”

“She hoped I was still someone she could trust.”

The difference mattered.

Nathan had not earned it.

Not yet.

At the bottom of the box lay a blue journal.

Nathan opened to the first page.

January 14, 2019

Marcus apologized again. I believed him again. I hate how stupid that sentence looks.

Nathan turned pages.

Sarah documented everything.

Not every day.

Only moments she feared she might someday be forced to prove.

Marcus breaking doors.

Marcus controlling bank accounts.

Marcus reading messages.

Marcus taking Lily for hours after arguments and refusing to say where they were.

William arriving afterward.

Always calm.

Always helpful.

Always explaining why Sarah should not involve Nathan.

Then Nathan reached an entry from 2021.

His hands stopped.

I went to Nathan today.

Nathan read slowly.

I stood in the lobby holding Lily’s hand and thought I might throw up. I had rehearsed what I would say for two weeks. I was going to tell him he had been right about Marcus. I was going to tell him I was sorry. I was going to ask my brother to help me go home.

Nathan blinked rapidly.

William appeared before I reached the elevator.

Daniel leaned closer.

Nathan continued.

He said Nathan had seen me on security cameras and asked him to remove me quietly.

Nathan covered his mouth.

I asked William to look me in the eye and tell me Nathan truly said that.

He did.

Then William showed me an email. It came from Nathan’s address.

Do not bring Marcus’s problems into my hospital. I warned you. I am done.

Nathan slammed the journal shut.

“I never wrote that.”

“I know,” Daniel said.

Nathan stood so abruptly the chair scraped backward.

“I want Crowe arrested.”

“We need evidence connecting him.”

Nathan pointed toward the box.

“This is evidence.”

“It’s strong. We need more.”

Nathan’s anger exploded.

“More?”

Daniel did not react.

“I’m trying to make sure he never walks away from this.”

Nathan stared at him.

Then slowly sat again.

Daniel was right.

Sarah needed a case stronger than rage.

Nathan reopened the journal.

A later entry.

I discovered the email was sent from a secondary server attached to Nathan’s foundation. I don’t know enough about computers to prove who did it.

Another.

I confronted William. He smiled.

Nathan’s blood chilled.

He told me brothers eventually choose their own lives. He said Nathan had already chosen his.

Then:

I think William is stealing from Nathan too.

Nathan looked at Daniel.

The foundation audit.

The missing money.

Everything connected.

He continued reading.

Marcus knows. I think they are working together.

The last entry was only four days old.

I moved copies of everything. Marcus knows something changed. He keeps asking about Mom’s bracelet. He thinks the key is still inside.

Nathan instinctively touched the bracelet.

If he discovers Box 317, I have one other copy. Nathan will know where if he remembers what Dad used to say whenever we hid Christmas presents.

Nathan frowned.

Daniel asked, “What did your father say?”

Nathan thought back thirty years.

Christmas mornings.

Sarah laughing.

Their father pretending not to know where gifts had disappeared.

Then the memory came.

He whispered:

“Nothing stays hidden from the mountain.”

Daniel waited.

“What does that mean?”

Nathan looked toward the snow-covered peaks visible through the bank windows.

“Our family cabin.”

“Where?”

“About forty miles north.”

Daniel’s phone rang before Nathan could say more.

He answered.

“This is Reeves.”

His expression changed instantly.

“Where?”

Nathan stood.

Daniel listened for another ten seconds.

Then looked at him.

“They found Sarah.”

Nathan forgot how to breathe.

“Alive?”

Daniel’s eyes softened.

“Yes.”

Nathan gripped the table.

“Where?”

“A ranger found her inside an abandoned maintenance station six miles from Marcus’s truck.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

Alive.

Sarah was alive.

Then Daniel continued.

“She’s asking for her children.”

Nathan was already moving.

But Daniel caught his arm.

“There’s something you need to know first.”

Nathan turned.

“What?”

“Sarah told the ranger someone else was with Marcus last night.”

Nathan already knew the answer.

“William?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Nathan frowned.

“Then who?”

Daniel’s next words made the bank vault feel suddenly colder than the mountain outside.

“Sarah says William Crowe isn’t running this.”

May you like

Nathan stared at him.

“She says Marcus is afraid of someone too.”
