Chapter 12 - THE TUNNEL UNDER BELLWEATHERThe tunnel beneath the bakery did not end at the warehouse.

It continued east through a system of utility passages constructed before World War II.

Owen had studied them for years.

Vale Protective Services held maintenance contracts for several properties above the tunnels. His employees could move equipment—and people—without appearing on street cameras.

Lily sang as Owen pulled her through the darkness.

Every few steps, he told her to stop.

She began again whenever his attention shifted.

Nolan carried Leo behind them.

Pike limped near the rear.

“You cannot drag them through here forever,” Pike said.

Owen ignored him.

“Border patrol knows your vehicles,” Pike continued. “Airports are watching. Your accounts are frozen.”

“Yours too.”

“I can make a deal.”

Owen stopped.

The beam of his flashlight turned toward Pike.

“You think they will believe you?”

“I have records.”

“Records I gave you.”

“I kept copies.”

Owen smiled.

“That is why no one trusts partners.”

Lily listened.

Adults told secrets when they thought children could not understand.

Pike had copies.

That meant the case did not depend only on her mother’s file.

“Where are your copies?” Lily asked.

Pike looked at her.

Owen tightened his grip.

“Do not speak to him.”

“My mom says men who keep secrets always keep two.”

Pike laughed despite the blood on his mouth.

“Smart girl.”

Owen struck him with the flashlight.

Pike fell against the tunnel wall.

A gunshot cracked through the passage.

The bullet struck concrete near Owen’s head.

Federal agents had entered behind them.

Owen pulled Lily around a bend.

Nolan ran with Leo.

Pike remained on the ground.

Rachel reached him moments later.

“Where are they going?”

Pike pressed a hand against his bleeding scalp.

“I want protection.”

“Two children are in danger.”

“I give you Owen, you protect me.”

Rachel grabbed his collar.

“You protected a murderer for years. You helped abduct Elena. You watched children through bedroom cameras. Your deal begins after you tell me where they are going.”

Pike smiled weakly.

“Bellweather.”

Rachel froze.

“The apartment building?”

“There is a tunnel beneath it. Room 12 was only the control center. The original shelter is deeper.”

“Why go back?”

“Owen keeps his real archive there.”

“And Elena?”

Pike closed his eyes.

“He will trade the children for the upload.”

“Is Elena there?”

“I don’t know.”

Rachel released him to the agents.

“Arrest him.”

The tunnel divided twice.

Lily tore small pieces from the fleece blanket and dropped them at each turn.

Owen noticed the third piece.

He picked it up.

“You think someone is following?”

Lily said nothing.

He grabbed the blanket and threw it into a drainage channel.

Leo began crying for it.

Nolan shifted him impatiently.

“Quiet the kid.”

“He’s two,” Lily said.

Owen looked at her.

“I was not speaking to you.”

“You’re always speaking to me. You just pretend you’re not.”

He raised his hand.

Then he lowered it.

Lily knew why.

He needed her frightened, not unconscious.

The tunnel entered a concrete room beneath Bellweather.

Metal shelves held boxes of documents, cash, passports, and hard drives.

Photographs covered one wall.

Mara.

Carmen.

Elena.

Other women Lily did not recognize.

Some had red marks across their pictures.

Owen locked the door behind them.

“This is where your mother’s lies end,” he said.

Lily stared at the photographs.

“These women were scared of you.”

“They made choices.”

“You killed them.”

“Your mother taught you ugly words.”

“She taught me your words.”

Owen opened a laptop.

A video-call screen appeared.

Elena sat in a chair inside another room.

Her face was bruised, but she was alive.

“Mom!”

Elena lifted her head.

“Lily?”

Leo heard her voice and reached toward the screen.

Elena began crying.

Owen positioned himself between the children and the camera.

“Tell me where you sent Mara’s file.”

“Let them go.”

“You are not negotiating.”

“You need what I know.”

“Your daughter says the location is hidden on a map.”

Elena’s expression changed.

Lily saw the warning in her eyes.

Owen noticed too.

“So there is a map.”

Elena looked at Lily.

“Sweetheart, did you follow the stars?”

Lily understood.

Her mother was not asking whether police found the bakery.

She was asking whether Lily remembered the last step of the bedtime game.

Big star.

Right turn.

Small star.

Left turn.

The final number was not an address.

It was a time.

2:17.

The exact minute Lily had been told to call 911.

At 2:17 a.m., an automated system would release everything Elena had collected.

The upload did not need an address.

It needed time.

Lily looked at the clock on Owen’s laptop.

1:53 a.m.

Twenty-four minutes remained.

“I forgot,” Lily said.

Owen leaned closer.

“You do not forget.”

“I was scared.”

“You were clever at the bakery.”

“I want Mom.”

Elena’s voice came through the speaker.

“Lily, listen to me. None of this is your fault.”

Owen muted the call.

“Where is the file?”

Lily started crying.

This time, she made it convincing.

“I can’t remember.”

Owen looked at Nolan.

“Bring the boy.”

Nolan placed Leo on the floor beside a steel door.

Owen removed a key.

Beyond the door, water rushed through an old storm channel.

Lily’s crying stopped.

He opened it.

Cold air and the roar of water filled the room.

“Tell me,” Owen said, “or Leo goes outside.”

Nolan hesitated.

“He’s a baby.”

Owen looked at him.

“You are being paid to obey.”

Nolan did not move.

Owen drew his gun.

Fear shifted inside the room.

For the first time, it no longer belonged only to Lily.

Nolan set Leo beside her.

“No.”

Owen aimed at him.

Nolan raised his hands.

Pike had feared Owen.

Nolan feared him.

But fear did not always create obedience.

Sometimes it created a final refusal.

The wall behind the shelves exploded inward.

Rachel and Ruiz entered through a maintenance passage.

“Police! Drop the weapon!”

Owen grabbed Lily.

Nolan lunged for the gun.

A shot fired.

Nolan fell.

Rachel fired at Owen’s shoulder.

He spun, dragging Lily toward the storm door.

The laptop clock changed.

2:16 a.m.

One minute remained.
