Chapter 8 - The Date Beside Emma’s Name

Maria grabbed the paper.

“No.”

She read the date again.

Tomorrow.

“No.”

Michael took it.

His face changed.

“That list wasn’t made by Marco.”

“How do you know?” Rafael asked.

“The formatting.”

Alejandro stared at him.

“You recognize a murder schedule by formatting?”

Michael ignored the remark.

“This is Black Crown.”

Maria clutched Emma.

“Then we leave the country.”

Michael shook his head.

“They’ll find you.”

“Then tell me what to do!”

Emma watched her parents argue.

For the first time in her life, she had two of them in the same room.

And they were arguing over whether she would survive tomorrow.

Alejandro took the list.

“Why Emma?”

Michael stared at the names.

“Look at the others.”

Alejandro did.

Politicians.

Accountants.

Attorneys.

Two journalists.

A police commissioner.

Matteo.

Dr. Mercer.

“All witnesses,” Rafael said.

Michael nodded.

“But Emma didn’t witness anything until last night.”

Alejandro looked closer.

Her name had been added before the poisoning.

Meaning she was a threat for another reason.

Michael suddenly understood.

“My father.”

“What?”

“Anthony has documents.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

“He’d give them to Emma?”

“No.”

Michael stared at his daughter.

“But he might have already given them to her.”

Maria frowned.

“How?”

Emma hugged her rabbit.

Everyone looked at it.

Michael’s face changed.

“The rabbit.”

Maria pulled it away.

Emma protested.

“Mommy!”

Michael took the stuffed animal.

“Where did you get this?”

Emma frowned.

“For my birthday.”

“From who?”

“Mommy.”

Maria shook her head.

“No. Elena gave it to you.”

Emma thought.

“Oh.”

Maria remembered.

“Elena said someone left it with the staff gifts.”

Michael examined the seam.

One section had been stitched by hand.

He opened it carefully.

Inside was the tracker he had placed years earlier.

And something else.

A tiny memory card.

Alejandro stared.

“Anthony.”

Michael nodded.

“He used Emma as storage.”

Maria looked horrified.

“He hid evidence in my daughter’s toy?”

“Because nobody searches a four-year-old’s rabbit.”

Alejandro almost laughed.

“Everyone searches the four-year-old’s rabbit now.”

Daniel found a laptop.

They inserted the card.

Encrypted.

Michael typed a password.

Rejected.

He tried another.

Rejected.

Emma watched.

“What are you doing?”

“Trying to open Grandpa’s files.”

“What’s the password?”

Michael looked at her.

“I don’t know.”

Emma walked closer.

“Try my birthday.”

Michael did.

Rejected.

“My name?”

Rejected.

Emma thought.

“Bunny?”

Rejected.

Alejandro leaned against the table.

“Anthony liked chess.”

Michael nodded.

He entered an old chess opening.

Rejected.

Emma suddenly said, “Purple elephant.”

Everyone looked at her.

“What?”

“Grandpa wrote me a card once.”

Maria stared.

“When?”

“Birthday.”

“You never met him.”

“He said purple elephants remember everything.”

Michael’s face changed.

“My father used to tell me that.”

He typed PURPLEELEPHANT.

The screen unlocked.

Folders appeared.

Hundreds.

Payments.

Photographs.

Audio recordings.

Names.

Judges.

Police officials.

Executives.

Criminal leaders.

Black Crown.

Rafael exhaled.

“This could burn half the city.”

Michael shook his head.

“More.”

Alejandro opened another folder.

Videos.

One showed Anthony Bellini sitting alone.

The date was three weeks earlier.

Alejandro played it.

Anthony appeared exhausted.

“If you’re watching this, then I failed.”

Emma moved closer.

“That’s Grandpa.”

Michael’s eyes filled with tears.

Anthony continued.

“Michael, if you survived, forgive me only if you believe I deserve it. Not because I’m your father.”

Michael looked away.

“To Maria, I am sorry for placing you and Emma in danger.”

Maria stared.

“To Alejandro, I ordered Matteo’s death. No explanation makes that forgivable. But before he died, Matteo discovered something even I did not understand.”

Alejandro leaned closer.

“Black Crown was never protecting the Moretti organization. It was using it.”

The video continued.

“For decades, they have created conflict, then profited by controlling the resolution. Criminal violence creates political fear. Political fear creates contracts, elections, surveillance budgets, development projects and emergency powers.”

Rafael muttered, “Follow the money.”

Anthony nodded on the screen as if answering him.

“The Moretti family was useful because it frightened people.”

Alejandro stared.

His father had believed he built an empire.

In reality, someone larger had allowed it.

Anthony continued.

“When Alejandro began dismantling violent operations, Black Crown marked him for removal.”

Maria looked at the murder list.

“And Emma?”

Anthony’s recording answered.

“My granddaughter became my insurance.”

Michael whispered, “Dad…”

“I placed this archive inside her rabbit because no one knew she existed except a few trusted people.”

Alejandro glanced at Michael.

That explained the original plan.

But somewhere the secret had leaked.

Anthony continued.

“If Emma is threatened, publish everything.”

The recording ended.

Silence.

Emma looked confused.

“Grandpa gave me homework?”

Alejandro crouched beside her.

“Something like that.”

“Do I have to do it?”

“No.”

“Good.”

She walked toward a vending machine.

“I want crackers.”

Every adult watched her.

The evidence capable of destroying Black Crown had been carried for months by a little girl who cared far more about crackers.

Alejandro stood.

“We publish it.”

Michael shook his head.

“No.”

Maria stared at him.

“They’re trying to kill our daughter.”

“If we release everything blindly, people inside Black Crown will panic. Evidence disappears. Witnesses die.”

“What do you suggest?”

“We make copies. Send them to multiple journalists and federal agencies with delayed release.”

Rafael nodded.

“Dead-man switch.”

Alejandro looked at Emma.

“No.”

Michael frowned.

“What?”

“No delayed release.”

“Why?”

“Because that means Emma remains valuable until the deadline.”

Alejandro picked up the laptop.

“We release enough tonight to make killing her useless.”

Daniel smiled faintly.

“That’ll create chaos.”

“Good.”

Michael studied him.

“You really are trying to go legitimate.”

Alejandro looked at the list of dead names.

“My brother tried first.”

They began duplicating files.

Daniel contacted an investigative reporter.

Rafael contacted a federal prosecutor outside the region.

Michael sent copies to secure servers.

Maria stayed with the children.

At 11:42 p.m., the first story went live.

SECRET NETWORK LINKS JUDGES, POLICE OFFICIALS, BUSINESSES AND ORGANIZED CRIME.

At 11:49, another outlet published documents.

At 11:53, a federal office confirmed an investigation.

At 11:58, two city officials resigned.

Midnight arrived.

The deadline Marco had set for Terminal Twelve.

Alejandro’s phone rang.

Marco.

“You made a mistake.”

Alejandro answered calmly.

“I’ve made several. Be specific.”

“You released the files.”

“Yes.”

“You just started a war.”

“No, Marco.”

Alejandro looked toward Emma eating crackers beside Luca.

“I ended your leverage.”

Marco laughed softly.

“You think Emma was my leverage?”

Alejandro went still.

Marco continued.

“She was never the target.”

Michael grabbed the phone.

“What are you talking about?”

“The date on the list?”

Marco sounded amused.

“It isn’t an execution date.”

Alejandro looked at the paper.

“What is it?”

“A transfer date.”

Michael’s face drained of color.

“Transfer to where?”

Marco laughed.

“You still don’t understand who Emma is.”

Maria stood.

“What does that mean?”

Marco continued.

“Anthony didn’t hide evidence with Emma because she was convenient.”

Michael whispered, “No.”

“He hid it because Black Crown has rules.”

Alejandro stared at Michael.

“What rules?”

Marco answered.

“Leadership passes through blood.”

Michael closed his eyes.

Marco continued.

“Anthony Bellini was the last recognized Crown Keeper.”

Rafael frowned.

“And?”

“When he dies, his legal heir inherits access to the accounts, archives and voting authority.”

Michael whispered, “I’m legally dead.”

Marco laughed.

“Exactly.”

Everyone looked at Emma.

Marco said it.

“So the heir isn’t Michael.”

Maria pulled her daughter close.

“It’s Emma.”

Alejandro stared.

A four-year-old child had unknowingly inherited control over accounts, evidence and influence belonging to one of the most dangerous secret organizations in the region.

Marco’s voice turned cold.

May you like

“Tomorrow isn’t the day they plan to kill Emma.”

“It’s the day Black Crown plans to take her.”
