Chapter 7 - THE GUARD'S SECRET

Victor Hale didn't deny it.

When Ethan confronted him, Victor sat in a hospital bed with one arm wrapped around his ribs and looked at the floor.

“Yes.”

One word.

One truth.

One explosion.

Ethan stared at him.

“Lucas is your son?”

“Yes.”

“With Amelia?”

Victor's eyes closed.

“Yes.”

Silence.

I had never seen betrayal arrive so slowly.

Ethan didn't shout.

He didn't attack him.

That somehow made it worse.

“How long?”

Victor swallowed.

“Before you married her.”

Ethan laughed once.

A broken sound.

“You were my friend.”

“I know.”

“You were at my wedding.”

“I know.”

“You stood beside me when she died.”

Victor looked up.

“I loved her before you did.”

The room changed.

Ethan stepped forward.

“So this is about jealousy?”

“No.”

“Then tell me what it's about.”

Victor told us.

Eight years earlier, before Amelia met Ethan, she and Victor had been together briefly.

Victor had been young.

Broke.

Working low-level security for Caldwell shipping yards.

Amelia came from money but hated everything about that world.

They ended badly.

Months later, Amelia met Ethan.

Victor never told Ethan.

Neither did Amelia.

Then, years afterward, Amelia became pregnant.

Everyone assumed Ethan was the father.

Even Amelia.

The timeline made it possible.

When Lucas was born, however, Richard had DNA tested him secretly.

Lucas was Victor's.

Noah, born to Sarah Hart the same night, was Ethan's.

Richard saw an opportunity.

Ethan's father wanted a biological Caldwell heir.

Amelia's baby wasn't one.

Sarah's was.

So the infants were switched.

Noah became Ethan and Amelia's son.

Lucas became Sarah Hart's child on paper.

Victor discovered the truth only after Amelia began investigating.

“She came to me,” he said.

“When?” Ethan asked.

“Four days before she died.”

“What did she tell you?”

“That Lucas was mine.”

Ethan's face twisted.

“You knew before her funeral?”

“No.”

Victor's voice cracked.

“She told me there might have been a switch. She didn't know where Lucas was. She wanted proof.”

“You helped her?”

“Yes.”

“And then she died.”

Victor nodded.

“I've spent three years looking.”

“And you never told me.”

“I couldn't prove it.”

“That's your excuse?”

“No.”

Victor looked him directly in the eyes.

“My excuse is that I was afraid you'd kill me before I could find Lucas.”

Ethan almost smiled.

“You thought correctly.”

I stepped between them before history became irrelevant.

“Richard has Lucas now.”

Both men stopped.

“That matters more.”

Victor looked at me.

“I know where he might be.”

Ethan turned.

“Where?”

“An old Caldwell property outside Blackridge.”

“Why there?”

“Richard used it years ago for private meetings.”

Mateo checked.

The property still belonged to a shell corporation connected to Richard.

We left before sunset.

Noah stayed behind with Dr. Reed and Margaret under guard.

I was supposed to stay too.

Ethan didn't even bother arguing when I got into the SUV.

“You have a strange understanding of employment,” he said.

“I've noticed.”

The Blackridge property was an abandoned children's treatment center.

That alone made my stomach turn.

Murals still covered the hallway walls.

Animals.

Clouds.

Smiling suns.

The kind of place that had once promised sick children they'd be safe.

Now it smelled of mildew.

We entered through the back.

Victor led.

Ethan followed.

I stayed with Mateo.

Rooms were empty.

Beds stripped.

Then we heard something.

A child crying.

Victor ran.

“Lucas!”

A door slammed.

Ethan reached it first.

Locked.

Victor threw his shoulder against it.

Nothing.

Ethan shot the lock.

Inside—

Lucas sat tied to a chair.

Alive.

Victor stopped.

The boy looked up.

“Who are you?”

Victor's face collapsed.

Imagine finding the son you'd spent years searching for.

Then imagine realizing he had no idea who you were.

Victor crouched.

“My name is Victor.”

Lucas stared.

“Richard said you were dead.”

Victor closed his eyes.

“No.”

“He said my father died before I was born.”

“No.”

Lucas's lower lip trembled.

Ethan stepped closer.

The boy looked at him.

“You're Noah's dad.”

“Yes.”

“Richard hates you.”

“I know.”

“He said you stole my life.”

Ethan flinched.

“You didn't.”

Lucas looked confused.

“He said that house was supposed to be mine.”

“It wasn't.”

“My mother?”

Ethan's face softened.

“Amelia?”

Lucas nodded.

“She was your mother.”

“Did she know me?”

“She tried to find you.”

That broke the boy.

He started crying.

Victor untied him.

Lucas didn't hug him.

He went to Ethan.

That surprised everyone.

“Did she love Noah?”

“Yes.”

“Then she would've loved me?”

Ethan crouched.

“She already did.”

Lucas stared at him.

Then whispered, “Richard said she chose Noah.”

Ethan shook his head.

“No. Richard took the choice away from her.”

Footsteps echoed outside.

Mateo shouted.

“Move!”

Gunfire cracked somewhere down the corridor.

I grabbed Lucas.

We ran.

Victor covered behind us.

Ethan stayed close.

We reached a side exit.

Two SUVs waited.

Then Lucas stopped.

“My bag!”

“Forget the bag,” I said.

“No!”

“Lucas—”

“It has my mom's letters!”

Everyone froze.

“What letters?” Ethan asked.

“Richard gave me letters.”

“From Amelia?”

Lucas nodded.

“Where?”

“Upstairs.”

Victor looked at Ethan.

Ethan looked at me.

“No.”

I knew that tone.

“I didn't say anything.”

“You were thinking it.”

“I absolutely was.”

“You're staying here.”

He and Victor went back inside.

Three minutes.

Five.

Seven.

Then Victor emerged carrying a small backpack.

Alone.

“Where's Ethan?”

Victor looked behind him.

“He was right there.”

My blood turned cold.

Then an explosion rocked the building.

Windows shattered.

Lucas screamed.

I threw myself over him.

Smoke poured through the roof.

Victor ran toward the entrance.

“No!”

Mateo grabbed him.

“Building's going!”

“My friend is in there!”

Then Ethan staggered through the smoke.

Blood on his forehead.

Alive.

I didn't think.

I ran to him.

My arms wrapped around him before I could stop myself.

For one second he froze.

Then he held me just as tightly.

“You're hurt.”

“I'm fine.”

“You're bleeding.”

“I've had worse.”

“Stop saying that like it's reassuring.”

Behind us, Lucas stared.

Then looked at Victor.

“Is he always like that?”

Victor laughed.

“Yes.”

It was the first time I'd heard him laugh.

We drove back with Lucas between Victor and me.

He held the backpack tightly.

Inside were eight letters.

All supposedly written by Amelia.

Only three were real.

I knew immediately.

The handwriting changed.

So did Ethan.

“Richard forged the others.”

“Why?” I asked.

“To make Lucas hate Noah.”

One forged letter claimed Amelia had discovered the switch and decided to keep Noah because Lucas was “not a Caldwell.”

Another said she wished Lucas had died.

Cruel.

Calculated.

Exactly the kind of poison that didn't come in a bottle.

Lucas sat silently.

Then asked, “Which ones are real?”

Ethan chose one.

“This.”

He handed it over.

The letter had no recipient.

Maybe Amelia never knew where to send it.

My beautiful boy,

I don't know your name.

I don't know where you are.

But if the truth is what I fear, I need you to know I am looking for you.

None of this is your fault.

None of it is Noah's.

Children do not steal lives from each other.

Adults steal choices.

If I find you, I will tell you every day that you were wanted.

Lucas couldn't finish.

Victor took the letter.

His hands shook.

Noah met us at the front entrance of the estate.

Against every instruction he'd been given, he was standing.

Holding onto the doorframe.

Lucas got out of the SUV.

The boys looked at each other.

Noah spoke first.

“You look like Mom.”

Lucas answered, “You look like Ethan.”

Noah frowned.

“You can call him Dad.”

Everyone stopped.

Lucas stared.

Noah shrugged.

“If you want.”

Ethan turned away.

I knew why.

His eyes were wet.

Lucas walked toward Noah.

“You can really walk?”

“A little.”

“Richard said you were crippled.”

Noah's face tightened.

“He lies.”

Lucas nodded.

“I know.”

Noah held out his hand.

“Want to see my room?”

Lucas looked at Victor.

Victor nodded.

The boys disappeared together.

For the first time, there were two children in the Caldwell mansion who should never have met.

Behind me, Ethan whispered, “Amelia would have wanted that.”

“Yes.”

Then Mateo ran outside.

“Sir.”

Ethan turned.

“What?”

“We got Richard.”

My heart jumped.

“Where?”

Mateo's face was strange.

“At police headquarters.”

Ethan frowned.

“He surrendered.”

That made no sense.

Richard Caldwell had spent days running.

Killing.

Threatening.

Destroying records.

Why surrender?

Mateo held out a phone.

A news alert covered the screen.

ETHAN CALDWELL NAMED SUSPECT IN WIFE'S DEATH

My stomach dropped.

Richard hadn't surrendered because he'd lost.

May you like

He'd surrendered because he'd changed the battlefield.

And by sunrise, Ethan Caldwell was arrested for Amelia's murder.
