Chapter 5 - HARRISON

Claire refused to go alone.

Owen refused to let her go at all.

Thomas wanted to leave the estate.

For ten minutes they argued.

Then every screen in the mansion turned on.

Harrison's face appeared.

Older than Claire expected.

Calm.

Well dressed.

Almost ordinary.

That was the frightening part.

He didn't look like a monster.

He looked like the kind of man people trusted.

A message appeared beneath his face.

BASEMENT.

Claire stared.

Then another message appeared.

COME BEFORE MIDNIGHT.

Owen's expression hardened.

“He wants us underground.”

Thomas shook his head.

“No.”

“You know him.”

“Yes.”

“You know what he wants.”

Thomas looked at Claire.

“He doesn't want the card.”

“What does he want?”

“You.”

Claire felt the room grow colder.

“Why me?”

“Because your grandfather didn't hide the evidence in you.”

Thomas pointed toward the necklace.

“He hid the evidence for you.”

Claire didn't understand.

“What is the difference?”

Thomas looked terrified.

“The card isn't the evidence.”

“What is it?”

“A key.”

“To what?”

“The original ledger.”

Owen's expression changed.

“Where?”

Thomas whispered:

“Beneath the old Bennett house.”

Claire stared.

Her childhood home had been demolished years ago.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“There's nothing there.”

“There is.”

“Why would my grandfather hide it?”

“Because the property wasn't destroyed.”

Claire looked at him.

“What?”

Thomas nodded.

“The house was sold under a false identity.”

“To whom?”

“Harrison.”

Claire's heart stopped.

“My childhood home belongs to Harrison?”

“Not anymore.”

“Then who owns it?”

Thomas looked at Owen.

Owen answered.

“Me.”

Claire stared.

Owen continued.

“I bought it three years ago.”

“Why?”

“Because I knew Robert had hidden something there.”

Claire shook her head.

“This is insane.”

“No,” Owen said quietly.

“This is your family history.”

They entered the basement.

It smelled of concrete and old wood.

At the far end was a steel door.

Owen opened it.

Inside was a small room.

Claire stopped.

On the wall was a faded child's drawing.

A house.

A tree.

A little girl holding hands with an older man.

Claire walked closer.

She recognized it.

“I drew this.”

Owen nodded.

“Robert kept it.”

Claire touched the paper.

Then she noticed something written beneath it.

Her grandfather's handwriting.

“WHEN SHE RETURNS, THE WALL WILL OPEN.”

Claire looked around.

“Which wall?”

Thomas whispered:

“The one behind the drawing.”

They moved it.

There was a narrow seam.

Claire pressed the crescent pendant against it.

Nothing happened.

She remembered the vault.

Old mechanisms.

No force.

She turned the pendant slowly.

Click.

A section of wall opened.

Inside was a metal box.

Claire pulled it out.

It contained one ledger.

Black.

Heavy.

Old.

She opened the cover.

Names filled the pages.

Bankers.

Judges.

Police chiefs.

Business owners.

Politicians.

And beneath every name was an amount of money.

Claire turned another page.

Her breath caught.

The final entry read:

HARRISON HALE — $48,000,000.

Thomas covered his mouth.

Owen stared.

But Claire kept reading.

The next page had only one sentence.

“THE MONEY WAS NEVER MINE.”

Underneath was Robert's signature.

Claire whispered:

“Then whose was it?”

A gun clicked behind them.

Harrison stepped from the darkness.

Thomas turned slowly.

Harrison smiled.

“Mine.”

Owen raised his weapon.

Harrison's men appeared behind him.

Claire looked at the ledger.

Harrison walked toward her.

“You have no idea how long I've waited for this.”

Claire held the ledger against her chest.

“You killed my grandfather.”

Harrison's smile disappeared.

“He betrayed me.”

“He tried to expose you.”

“He tried to destroy everything.”

Claire stepped forward.

“He protected me.”

Harrison laughed.

“Did he?”

He pointed at Owen.

“Ask him what happened the night Robert died.”

Claire looked at Owen.

Harrison continued.

“Ask him who pulled the trigger.”

Owen's face went rigid.

Claire stared at him.

“Owen?”

He said nothing.

Harrison smiled.

“Now you're finally asking the right question.”

Claire looked at Owen.

“Did you kill my grandfather?”

Owen slowly lowered his gun.

“No.”

Harrison laughed.

“Then ask him who did.”

Owen looked at Thomas.

Thomas's face had gone white.

Claire understood immediately.

The answer was written all over him.

“You.”

Thomas began shaking.

“No.”

Claire whispered:

“Thomas?”

Harrison smiled.

“Eleven years he has worked for Owen.”

He looked at Claire.

“And for the last twenty-two years, he's been hiding the truth.”

Thomas backed away.

“I didn't kill him.”

Harrison's voice became cold.

“You held the gun.”

Claire stared at Thomas.

Thomas looked at her.

Tears filled his eyes.

“I was nineteen.”

The ledger slipped from Claire's hands.

Then Thomas said the words that changed everything.

“I shot your grandfather…”

May you like

He paused.

“…but he was already dead.”
