Chapter 10 - New Beginnings

The labor began on a rainy Tuesday morning in late May.

It was not a chaotic, frantic rush like the day in the department store; it was a quiet, controlled, and beautiful process. Lucy sat on a large rubber ball in the birthing suite at Memorial Hospital, her sister Clara holding her hand, while a playlist of soft acoustic music played in the background.

Dr. Sterling stood by her side, his voice calm and encouraging as he guided her through each contraction.

"You're doing beautifully, Lucy," he said. "One more strong push, and we’re going to meet your daughter."

Lucy closed her eyes. She didn't think about the cold, dark elevator. She didn't think about the heavy boots that had passed her by. She thought about the tiny, brave girl who had survived seven hours of darkness beside her, who had kept kicking to let her mother know she was still fighting.

With one final, powerful breath, she pushed.

The room was instantly filled with a loud, healthy, and incredibly angry cry.

"She’s here, Lucy!" Clara sobbed, leaning down to kiss her sister’s cheek. "She’s perfect!"

Dr. Sterling placed the tiny, warm baby girl directly onto Lucy’s chest. The child was covered in a soft white blanket, her little hands reaching up to catch her mother’s finger, her dark eyes blinking in the warm light of the room.

"Welcome to the world, Clara," Lucy whispered, her tears falling onto her daughter’s soft, damp hair.

The baby’s fingers curled around Lucy’s empty ring finger, holding on with a strength that felt like a promise—not a performance, but a real, unbreakable promise of a new life, built on truth, courage, and a love that would never leave her behind.

Outside the hospital window, the rain stopped, and the clouds parted, letting the bright, golden sun of a Chicago spring flood the room with light.
