Chapter 2 - The Man Named HartThe room changed after that.

Fear had a sound.

I heard it in the way they whispered.

I saw it in the way they stopped laughing.

I watched Dean pace from one side of the room to the other, checking the phone again and again as though somehow he could reverse what had happened.

He couldn't.

Neither could I.

The message was gone.

Outside.

Somewhere beyond those walls.

Maybe with Daniel Hart.

Maybe with someone else.

I didn't know.

But uncertainty had become my only source of hope.

Mara stayed near me.

She didn't speak.

Neither did I.

We both understood that words could become dangerous.

Then, around twenty minutes later, Dean's phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

"Who is it?" someone asked.

Dean didn't answer.

The phone rang again.

He finally picked up.

"Hello?"

Silence.

Then a man's voice came through.

I couldn't hear every word.

But I heard Dean's side.

"Sir."

My heart started beating faster.

"Yes."

"No."

A pause.

"I understand."

Another pause.

Dean looked toward me.

Then toward Mara.

"No, sir. She isn't going anywhere."

My stomach tightened.

Another silence.

Dean's face lost all its color.

"I said I understand."

The call ended.

Nobody spoke.

Dean slowly lowered the phone.

Mara looked at me.

"Who was it?"

Dean ignored her.

He walked toward the door.

"Nobody leaves this room."

He opened it.

Then stopped.

A voice came from the hallway.

"Actually, I think everyone is leaving."

Dean froze.

The voice was calm.

Male.

Controlled.

And completely unfamiliar.

The door opened wider.

A man in a dark jacket stepped inside.

Behind him were two uniformed officers.

For a second, I couldn't breathe.

Police.

Real police.

Not in my imagination.

Not in a story I had invented to survive the nights.

They were standing in front of me.

One officer immediately looked at the chain.

The second looked at me.

Then everything happened at once.

"Ma'am, we're here to help you."

I couldn't answer.

My body had forgotten how to trust those words.

The first officer approached slowly.

"You're safe."

I flinched.

He stopped.

He raised his hands.

"Okay. I won't come any closer."

His voice was gentle.

"You don't have to trust me yet."

That sentence broke something inside me.

I started crying.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just tears.

They came without permission.

The officer looked at Mara.

"Are you injured?"

She shook her head.

"Not physically."

Then she pointed toward me.

"Her phone."

The officer looked down.

I held it out.

He didn't take it immediately.

"May I?"

I nodded.

He accepted it carefully.

Another officer was already speaking into his radio.

"Victim located. Possible evidence secured. We need medical personnel immediately."

Victim.

The word sounded strange.

I had spent so long thinking of myself as something else.

A prisoner.

A burden.

A person who needed to survive one more hour.

But victim meant something different.

It meant what happened to me had a name.

And names mattered.

The dark-haired man who had entered first remained near the door.

I looked at him.

He was watching me.

Mara noticed.

"That's Hart."

My chest tightened.

Daniel Hart.

The name from the phone.

He walked closer.

Not too close.

"My name is Daniel."

I nodded.

"I know."

His eyebrows lifted.

"You know me?"

"They talked about you."

His expression hardened.

"What did they say?"

"That you knew."

He looked at Dean.

Then back at me.

"I didn't."

"You were afraid."

"I was afraid because I suspected something."

"That's different."

He nodded.

"You're right."

The officer approached him.

"Mr. Hart, we'll need to speak with you."

He nodded.

"Of course."

Then he looked at me again.

"I received your message."

I stared at him.

"You did?"

"Yes."

"Did you watch it?"

"All three."

My throat tightened.

"Then you know."

"I know enough to understand that you were being held here."

He paused.

"And I know they recorded themselves."

I closed my eyes.

For the first time, I allowed myself to believe that the evidence might survive.

The police began documenting the room.

Photographs.

Measurements.

The chain.

The door.

The bathroom.

The phone.

Every detail.

No one told me to stop.

No one told me it didn't matter.

One officer eventually crouched several feet away.

"We're going to get you medical care."

I nodded.

Then I remembered.

"My baby."

"We know."

My eyes filled again.

"Please."

"We're getting an ambulance."

Mara reached for my hand.

I let her.

The officer noticed.

"Did she help you?"

I looked at Mara.

She looked terrified.

Not for herself.

For what she had done.

I nodded.

"She gave me the phone."

The officer wrote something down.

Mara whispered:

"Tell them everything."

I squeezed her hand.

"I will."

Then Dean laughed.

It was quiet.

Almost bitter.

Everyone looked at him.

"You think this is over?"

One officer turned.

"Dean, sit down."

Dean smiled.

"You don't understand who you're dealing with."

Daniel Hart finally spoke.

"No."

His voice was calm.

"We understand exactly who we're dealing with."

Dean stared at him.

Hart continued.

"You made one mistake."

Dean said nothing.

"You assumed she had nobody."

Hart looked at me.

"She did."

May you like

Then he looked back at Dean.

"Until tonight."
