Chapter 10 - THE TRUTH THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Nobody moved.
Chloe stared at Richard.
“What did you say?”
Richard smiled.
“Your father was my partner.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“That's impossible.”
“No.”
Richard shook his head.
“He was smarter than all of us.”
He looked at Chloe.
“He discovered the Montgomery empire had been built through illegal acquisitions.”
Edward interrupted.
“You destroyed his life.”
Richard's smile disappeared.
“He betrayed me.”
“He tried to expose you.”
“He tried to steal from me.”
“He tried to save people.”
Richard looked at Edward.
“You sound just like your mother.”
Edward stiffened.
“What does that mean?”
Richard said nothing.
Laura stepped forward.
“Your father killed her too.”
Edward's face went pale.
“My mother?”
Richard smiled coldly.
“She knew too much.”
Edward stared at him.
“All these years…”
Richard shrugged.
“You thought she died of illness.”
Edward's voice broke.
“You murdered my mother.”
“Yes.”
The room became silent.
Edward looked at his father as if seeing a stranger.
Then Richard pulled a folder from his coat.
“Everything you own can disappear tonight.”
He tossed it onto the table.
“Your company.”
“Your properties.”
“Your accounts.”
“Your reputation.”
Edward stared.
“Why?”
“Because the original ownership documents were never destroyed.”
Richard pointed at Chloe.
“They're inside that pendant.”
Chloe instinctively touched her necklace.
“The memory card?”
“No.”
Richard smiled.
“The real key is not the card.”
He looked at Isabella.
“It's what the little girl knows.”
Everyone turned toward Isabella.
She began trembling.
“Me?”
Richard nodded.
“Your mother trusted you.”
Isabella shook her head.
“I don't know anything.”
“You do.”
Edward stepped between them.
“Stay away from my daughter.”
Richard pulled a gun.
Laura screamed.
Daniel reached for his weapon.
Richard fired into the ceiling.
Everyone froze.
Then Sophia began crying.
Edward lowered his hands.
“Okay.”
Richard smiled.
“Smart boy.”
He pointed toward Chloe.
“Give me the pendant.”
Chloe looked at Edward.
He nodded subtly.
She removed it.
Richard reached for it.
Then Isabella suddenly screamed.
“NOW!”
The lights exploded.
The room went dark.
Daniel tackled Richard.
Edward grabbed Laura.
Chloe pulled the girls behind a sofa.
Security rushed into the room.
Within seconds, Richard was restrained.
But Thomas was nowhere to be found.
Edward looked at Chloe.
“Where is the pendant?”
She shook her head.
“I gave it to him.”
Richard laughed.
“No.”
He looked at his empty hand.
Then at Chloe.
“You switched it.”
Chloe opened her palm.
The real pendant was there.
Richard's expression changed.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
Daniel took it.
“We have him.”
But Chloe wasn't celebrating.
She looked at Laura.
“There's something you haven't told us.”
Laura's eyes filled with tears.
“What?”
“You hired me.”
“Yes.”
“Because of my father.”
“Yes.”
“But you also said Edward couldn't control me.”
Laura nodded.
“Why?”
Laura looked at Edward.
Then at Chloe.
“Because I knew Edward would eventually fall in love with you.”
The room went silent.
Edward stared at Chloe.
Chloe stared back.
Laura continued.
“Not because I wanted it.”
“But because I knew the person who could finally save Edward from becoming his father…”
“…was someone who had already survived the Montgomery family once.”
Chloe's eyes filled with tears.
Edward whispered:
“Chloe…”
She looked at him.
He stepped closer.
“I fired you because I thought sending you away would save you.”
Chloe nodded.
“But it nearly destroyed the only family I had left.”
Edward looked at his daughters.
Sophia ran toward Chloe.
Isabella followed.
They wrapped their arms around her.
Edward watched them.
Then he smiled through tears.
“Stay.”
Chloe looked at him.
“I'm not your nanny anymore.”
Edward nodded.
“I know.”
“What am I?”
He hesitated.
Then said:
“The person who taught my daughters what love looked like when I had forgotten.”
Chloe smiled.
Outside, police sirens filled the night.
Richard was taken away.
Thomas was arrested hours later.
The Montgomery empire survived, but Edward dismantled the illegal portions and turned the remaining company into a legitimate business.
The offshore accounts were exposed.
The truth about Laura's disappearance became public.
And Chloe finally learned the truth about her father.
He hadn't abandoned her.
He had died protecting evidence that could destroy Richard.
Years later, Chloe would still remember that terrifying morning in the Bel Air garden.
The day Edward Montgomery fired her without explanation.
The day two little girls chased her across the lawn, begging her not to leave.
But there was one thing she would never forget.
Sophia's trembling voice.
“Daddy, don't fire her. She's the only person who stayed.”
Edward had thought Chloe was the person he needed to send away.
He had been wrong.
She was the person who had been quietly holding his broken family together all along.
