Chapter 15 - The Man He Trusted

The message was impossible.

Dominic's uncle had been dead for twenty-three years.

Yet the handwriting was unmistakable.

Elena confirmed it.

“I saw him write hundreds of letters.”

Norah stared at the paper.

“So he's alive?”

Dominic shook his head.

“No.”

“Then who wrote it?”

Nobody answered.

They returned to the Bellmont Hotel.

The old building was scheduled for demolition.

Inside the basement, Elena found a hidden door.

Behind it was a room untouched for decades.

There were files.

Photographs.

Recordings.

And a wall covered with names.

At the center:

THE MERCER NETWORK.

Dominic looked at the wall.

“This was my uncle's office.”

Norah found a tape.

She pressed play.

A man's voice filled the room.

Dominic's uncle.

“If Dominic is listening to this, then I failed.”

Dominic closed his eyes.

“I knew my brother would kill me.”

The recording continued.

“But I also knew Dominic would survive.”

Norah looked at him.

The voice continued.

“There is one person I trust.”

A pause.

“She doesn't know it yet.”

Norah's heart stopped.

The recording named her mother.

Elena.

“My trust in Elena is absolute.”

Dominic stared at his mother.

Then the recording continued.

“But if Elena cannot finish this, the responsibility passes to her daughter.”

Norah whispered:

“Me?”

“Yes.”

The recording had been made before Norah was born.

Her uncle had somehow known.

“Norah Bennett will become the key.”

Dominic stepped away from the machine.

“No.”

Norah looked at him.

“What?”

“I won't let them use you.”

The recording continued.

“There will come a day when Dominic trusts no one.”

Dominic froze.

“That day,” the voice said, “tell him to trust the quiet woman.”

Silence.

Norah looked at Dominic.

He looked back.

The man who had trusted nobody.

The man who had survived betrayal, violence, and a family built on fear.

He slowly walked toward her.

“I understand now.”

“What?”

“My uncle wasn't talking about your mother.”

Norah swallowed.

“He was talking about me.”

Dominic nodded.

“You're the person he believed I would eventually trust.”

Norah's eyes filled with tears.

“Do you?”

Dominic stood inches away.

“Yes.”

She waited.

“More than anyone.”

A crash came from upstairs.

Dominic immediately turned.

Men shouted.

Gunfire followed.

He reached for his weapon.

Elena grabbed Norah.

“Run!”

They raced toward the hidden exit.

Dominic stayed behind.

Norah turned.

“Dominic!”

“Go!”

“I won't leave you!”

His eyes met hers.

“Norah!”

She stopped.

Then he said the words she'd never expected.

“Trust me.”

She did.

They escaped through the underground tunnel.

But outside, they found dozens of police vehicles.

And at the front stood Valerie.

She smiled.

“You really thought this was over?”

Dominic emerged behind Norah.

Valerie raised a folder.

“I have something you don't.”

Norah stared.

“What?”

Valerie opened the folder.

Inside was a birth certificate.

Not Norah's.

Dominic's.

Valerie smiled.

“Dominic Mercer isn't a Mercer.”

Norah looked at Dominic.

He didn't move.

Valerie whispered:

“His real father was the man your mother spent twenty years protecting.”

Dominic's face went pale.

Elena closed her eyes.

And Norah finally understood.

The war had never been about money.

It had never been about the ledger.

It had never even been about the Mercer family.

It had been about one secret buried twenty-three years ago.

And now that secret was standing in front of them.

Alive.

Waiting.

Watching.

And suddenly, Dominic Mercer was no longer the heir to Chicago's most feared family.

He was the missing piece of a conspiracy that had begun before Norah was even born.

Valerie lowered the folder.

“You want the truth?”

Dominic stared at her.

“Yes.”

Valerie smiled.

“Then ask your mother who your father really was.”

Elena began to cry.

And for the first time in his life, Dominic looked afraid.
