Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN EVERYONE FEARED

"Are you injured?"

The question came from the man in the dark suit.

Emily stared at him.

Then at the elderly woman beside her.

Mrs. Kang looked nothing like someone who could command four men in tailored suits to enter a luxury department store within seconds.

She was still wearing the same faded beige coat.

Her gray hair was loosely pinned at the back of her head.

One of her shoes was scuffed.

A broken grocery bag hung from Emily's hand.

Nothing about her suggested power.

But the four men treated her like royalty.

"I'm fine," Mrs. Kang said quietly.

The man nearest them looked at Emily.

"Who are you?"

Emily stiffened.

"Emily Carter."

"Mrs. Kang?"

The old woman placed a trembling hand over Emily's.

"She helped me."

The man's expression changed.

He looked past Emily toward the store manager.

The manager had gone pale.

"Mr. Park," he whispered.

Park didn't answer him.

Instead, he looked at the broken perfume bottles.

Then at the red mark on Mrs. Kang's cheek.

Then at the manager's wrist.

His jaw tightened.

"Who touched her?"

Nobody spoke.

Emily did.

"He did."

She pointed directly at the manager.

"He slapped her."

A collective murmur moved through the store.

The manager immediately shook his head.

"That's not what happened."

Emily laughed once.

"Then what happened?"

"I was attempting to remove a disruptive customer."

"She was sitting down."

"She was trespassing."

"In a public department store?"

The manager's face hardened.

"You don't understand the situation."

"No," Emily said. "I understand it perfectly."

Park took out his phone.

"Call Mr. Han."

One of the other men immediately stepped aside.

The manager looked terrified.

"There's no need for that."

Park finally turned toward him.

"There is every need for that."

"Sir, I can explain."

"You will."

Park's voice was calm.

That somehow made it worse.

The manager swallowed.

Emily expected Mrs. Kang to be furious.

Instead, the elderly woman looked exhausted.

She bent down and picked up one of the apples.

Emily gently stopped her.

"I'll get it."

"Sweetheart..."

"Please."

Emily gathered the remaining groceries.

One apple had rolled beneath a handbag display.

A young sales associate retrieved it and placed it carefully into the bag.

The crowd was still watching.

Some phones remained raised.

Emily suddenly realized something.

Everyone had been afraid to help this woman.

Until she did.

Now they were waiting to see what would happen to her.

Mrs. Kang touched Emily's sleeve.

"You should leave."

Emily looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because this is going to become complicated."

Emily smiled sadly.

"My day was already complicated."

Mrs. Kang almost laughed.

It was the first hint of warmth Emily had seen in her.

Then the revolving doors opened.

A black SUV stopped directly outside the entrance.

Not a taxi.

Not a rideshare.

A long, immaculate black SUV with tinted windows.

The driver stepped out.

Then another man.

Then a third.

The store went completely silent.

The manager whispered something Emily couldn't hear.

Mrs. Kang closed her eyes.

"He's here."

"Who?"

"My son."

Emily glanced toward the doors.

The first man entered.

He was tall.

Early forties.

Black suit.

White shirt.

No tie.

His face was expressionless, but there was something about his eyes that made the entire room feel colder.

He stopped when he saw his mother.

Then his gaze moved to the red mark on her cheek.

Everything changed.

"Mom."

Mrs. Kang looked at him.

"I'm fine, Daniel."

Daniel Kang didn't answer.

He walked toward her.

"Who did this?"

His mother lowered her eyes.

"It's nothing."

"Mom."

His voice was softer now.

But more dangerous.

Emily stepped between them.

"She said she's fine."

Daniel looked at Emily.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then he asked,

"Who are you?"

"Emily Carter."

"Why are you standing between me and my mother?"

"Because she asked everyone to stop making a scene."

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"My mother doesn't usually ask people for protection."

Emily glanced toward the manager.

"Maybe she shouldn't have needed it."

Daniel looked over.

The manager immediately straightened.

"Mr. Kang, I can explain."

Daniel took one step toward him.

"You have ten seconds."

The manager's lips trembled.

"There was a misunderstanding."

"Nine."

"Mrs. Kang was loitering—"

"Eight."

"She refused to leave."

"Seven."

"I was trying to protect the store's reputation."

"Six."

"She became aggressive."

Emily stared at him.

"She could barely stand."

Daniel's gaze never left the manager.

"Five."

"Mr. Kang—"

"Four."

The manager finally broke.

"I lost my temper."

Daniel nodded once.

"Three."

"I shouldn't have touched her."

"Two."

"I apologize."

"One."

Daniel turned away.

The manager exhaled.

Then Daniel said,

"You're fired."

The man froze.

"Sir—"

"Effective immediately."

"But my contract—"

"Your contract ended the moment you touched my mother."

The manager's face collapsed.

Daniel's security team moved forward.

"Escort him out."

The manager started protesting.

Nobody listened.

Emily watched him disappear through the doors.

Then she looked at Daniel.

"You didn't have to do that."

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

"He assaulted an elderly woman."

"I know."

"And you're defending him?"

"No."

Emily shook her head.

"I'm saying you didn't have to fire him because of me."

Daniel stared at her for a moment.

Then he said something that surprised her.

"I didn't do it because of you."

He looked at his mother.

"I did it because he's lucky my mother asked me to show restraint."

Mrs. Kang sighed.

"Daniel."

He softened immediately.

"Let's get you home."

She nodded.

Then she turned toward Emily.

"Come with us."

Emily blinked.

"What?"

"Please."

"I don't think that's a good idea."

Mrs. Kang smiled.

"Neither did I think it was a good idea to sit in that store."

Emily couldn't help smiling.

Daniel, however, looked confused.

"Mom."

"I like her."

"That's not a reason."

"It is to me."

Emily shook her head.

"Mrs. Kang, I really need to get to work."

"What do you do?"

"I'm an accountant."

Daniel looked at his watch.

"You're late."

Emily stared.

"How did you—"

"Your phone has been vibrating for ten minutes."

Emily looked down.

Seven missed calls.

Three messages.

Her stomach dropped.

Her supervisor.

She was finished.

Then Daniel said,

"I'll have someone drive you."

Emily immediately shook her head.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because I don't accept rides from strangers."

His eyebrow lifted.

"You defended my mother without knowing who she was."

"That was different."

"How?"

"I didn't need to know who she was to know she deserved help."

For the first time, Daniel looked genuinely impressed.

Mrs. Kang smiled.

"Now I like her even more."

Emily laughed despite herself.

Then she looked at the old woman.

"I'll make sure you get home safely."

Mrs. Kang reached for her hand.

"You already did."

And Emily had no idea that those six words were about to change her life.

Because Daniel Kang wasn't simply a wealthy businessman.

And his mother wasn't simply an old woman who had been humiliated in a department store.

There was a reason she had been there.

May you like

A reason she had been waiting.

And someone had desperately wanted her to leave before she discovered the truth.
