Chapter 6 - The Legacy of Evelyn Hale

The following Sunday, a quiet, private memorial service was held at the edge of the Harbor Point cliffs, overlooking the roaring Atlantic Ocean.

A beautiful, white marble headstone had been placed beneath a massive oak tree, carved with a simple, powerful inscription:

EVELYN HALE A mother’s love is louder than death.

Julian stood at the head of the grave, holding a single white rose. Beside him stood Mara, holding little Evelyn in her arms, while Dr. Benjamin Ross and Susan Avery stood respectfully behind them.

"We did it, Evelyn," Julian whispered, placing the rose on the cold stone. "The house is safe. The children are home. And your voice was heard."

As the wind blew off the ocean, carrying the scent of salt and freedom, the three babies in the stroller nearby cooed in unison, their laughter echoing through the trees.

I looked at my family—the family my sister had died to protect—and I knew that the storm had finally passed.

The first thing Vanessa Cole did after Evelyn died was try to take her life. But she had forgotten one simple, eternal truth:

A mother's love isn't something you can steal. It’s an empire that stands long after the concrete has turned to dust.
