Chapter 15 - THE FAMILY THAT SURVIVED

Three weeks later, the Moretti mansion was quiet.

For the first time in years, no armed men stood outside the doors.

No secret meetings happened after midnight.

No unfamiliar cars waited beyond the gates.

The house finally felt like a home.

Luca stood in the music room.

The piano was still damaged.

The broken lock had been replaced.

The bloodstains were gone.

But he had refused to replace the piano.

It reminded him of the night everything changed.

Naomi entered carrying coffee.

"You haven't slept."

Luca smiled.

"Neither have you."

"I work here."

"You don't have to."

She placed the coffee on the piano.

"I know."

Luca looked at her.

"Then why stay?"

Naomi shrugged.

"Someone has to make sure your family doesn't destroy itself again."

He laughed.

It was the first genuine laugh she had heard from him.

"You know you're no longer a maid."

"I know."

"You're the director of household security."

Naomi stared.

"You gave me a promotion?"

"You saved my mother's life."

"I also broke a very expensive door."

Luca smiled.

"Send me the bill."

She laughed.

Then her expression softened.

"How is she?"

Luca looked toward the hallway.

"Better."

Isabella had begun physical therapy again.

She could move more of her body.

Her speech had improved.

And every morning, she played the same sequence on the piano.

Three low.

Two high.

Three low.

But now Luca understood what it meant.

Come home.

Vivian entered.

She looked different.

No designer dress.

No perfect makeup.

Just jeans and a sweater.

She carried a small box.

"What's that?"

"My mother's things."

Luca nodded.

"Bring them here."

She placed the box on the piano.

Inside were photographs.

Letters.

A bracelet.

And one final photograph.

Luca picked it up.

Elena.

Young.

Smiling.

Holding baby Vivian.

Luca stared at the photograph.

"I wish I had known her."

Vivian nodded.

"Me too."

He looked at her.

"I'm sorry."

She shook her head.

"You didn't know."

"I should have."

"So should I."

They stood silently.

Then Vivian asked:

"Do you hate me?"

Luca looked at her.

"No."

She began crying.

He opened his arms.

She stepped into them.

Father and daughter.

Twenty-eight years too late.

But finally together.

Across the room, Isabella watched them.

She smiled.

Rafael stood beside her.

Luca looked toward him.

Their relationship was complicated.

It would probably always be.

But Rafael had chosen to raise him.

And that mattered.

Luca walked over.

"I need to ask you something."

Rafael nodded.

"Anything."

"Who killed the real Victor?"

Rafael's expression changed.

"Alexander didn't."

"I know."

"Your grandfather didn't either."

"Then who?"

Rafael looked toward Isabella.

She lowered her head.

Rafael whispered:

"Victor wasn't killed."

Luca frowned.

"What?"

"He disappeared."

"When?"

"Thirty years ago."

"Then who's the body?"

"There wasn't one."

Luca stared.

"Why did everyone say he was dead?"

"Because Victor wanted everyone to think so."

"Why?"

"Because he was working undercover."

Luca's eyes narrowed.

"Undercover for whom?"

Rafael didn't answer.

A knock came from the front door.

Naomi walked in.

"There's a visitor."

"Who?"

She handed Luca an envelope.

No return address.

Inside was a photograph.

Luca stared.

The man in the photograph was older.

But unmistakable.

Victor Moretti.

Alive.

Standing beside a woman.

Luca looked at the date.

Yesterday.

On the back was a message.

YOU SAVED YOUR FAMILY. NOW SAVE THE CITY.

Luca looked up.

"Where did this come from?"

Naomi shook her head.

"It was left at the gate."

Luca studied the photograph.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A familiar voice spoke.

"You've spent your whole life believing the Moretti family was the center of the war."

Luca's eyes narrowed.

"Who are you?"

"I'm the person who started it."

"Victor?"

A laugh.

"No."

"Then who?"

The voice whispered:

"Your grandmother."

Luca froze.

His grandmother had died before he was born.

Or so he'd always been told.

The caller continued.

"Ask Isabella why your grandmother disappeared."

Luca looked at his mother.

She had gone completely white.

The call ended.

Luca slowly lowered the phone.

"Ma?"

Isabella began crying.

She reached for the notepad.

Her hand trembled.

She wrote:

SHE DIDN'T DISAPPEAR.

Luca stared.

Then she wrote another sentence.

SHE HAS BEEN WATCHING US.

Naomi stepped closer.

"From where?"

Isabella pointed toward the mansion's oldest wall.

Luca followed her gaze.

Behind the portrait of the Moretti family was a hidden camera.

He stared at it.

Someone had been watching them.

For decades.

Luca walked toward the wall.

He pulled the camera free.

Behind it was a small compartment.

Inside was a final photograph.

A woman.

Old.

Elegant.

Alive.

And standing beside her was a little boy.

Luca recognized the boy.

Himself.

But he had never seen the photograph before.

On the back were seven words:

HE WAS NEVER YOUR FIRST PROTECTOR.

Luca turned toward Rafael.

"Who is that boy?"

Rafael's face went pale.

"I don't know."

Luca looked at Isabella.

She began to cry.

Then a voice came from the hallway.

"I do."

Everyone turned.

Vivian stood there.

She was holding another photograph.

Her face was pale.

"I found this in my mother's box."

She handed it to Luca.

He looked down.

The photograph showed the same woman.

But this time, there were two children beside her.

Luca.

And another little boy.

The boy who would eventually become Adrian.

Luca looked at Vivian.

"Where did you find this?"

"In the last drawer."

"What's written on the back?"

Vivian swallowed.

"It says..."

She stopped.

Luca waited.

Vivian whispered:

THE THREE CHILDREN WILL END THE WAR.

Silence.

Luca looked around the room.

His mother.

Rafael.

Vivian.

Adrian.

Naomi.

For twenty-eight years, every generation had been used against the next.

But now the truth was finally coming into the light.

Luca placed the photograph on the piano.

"No more secrets."

Everyone looked at him.

"No more lies."

He turned toward his mother.

"No more protecting me by destroying yourselves."

Then he looked at Vivian.

"You're my daughter."

She nodded.

"Adrian is your brother."

She smiled through tears.

"And this family?"

Luca looked at the photograph.

"We rebuild it."

Outside, the first sunlight of morning broke through the clouds.

For the first time, Luca didn't feel like the ruthless man everyone feared.

He felt like a son.

A father.

A brother.

A man who had finally come home.

But as he walked toward the window, his phone vibrated one more time.

A message.

One sentence.

YOU FOUND THE FAMILY. NOW FIND THE WOMAN WHO CREATED IT.

Luca looked toward the distant mountains.

His expression hardened.

The war wasn't over.

It had only changed.

And somewhere beyond the city, an old woman smiled as she watched the Moretti mansion through a pair of binoculars.

Beside her stood a young man Luca had never met.

The boy turned.

"Should we tell him who you are?"

The woman smiled.

"Not yet."

"Why?"

She lowered the binoculars.

"Because when Luca learns the truth..."

Her smile disappeared.

"...he'll finally understand why his entire family was built on a lie."

May you like

And then she walked into the darkness.

TO BE CONTINUED.
