Chapter 8 - THE WITNESS

My mother sat in the hospital waiting room wrapped in a blanket.

She looked smaller than I remembered.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Detective Harris stood across from her.

“You were the witness?”

My mother nodded.

“Yes.”

She explained everything.

My father had been the accountant.

She had been the person who discovered where the money was going.

She had testified first.

Then she disappeared.

My father's staged death had protected both of them.

But something went wrong.

Richard found them.

“He threatened your daughter,” my mother whispered.

My heart broke.

“Me?”

“Yes.”

“So you let me believe Dad was dead?”

“I thought it would keep you safe.”

I cried.

“You lied to me for eleven years.”

“I know.”

I wanted to be angry.

I was angry.

But she had been terrified too.

Then Detective Harris asked:

“Where is the evidence?”

My mother looked at me.

“Your father gave it to you.”

Again.

“What does everyone mean by that?”

She smiled sadly.

“The necklace.”

I touched my neck.

A simple silver necklace hung there.

My father had given it to me when I was eighteen.

I had worn it almost every day.

My mother whispered:

“Open the pendant.”

My hands trembled.

Detective Harris carefully examined it.

The back unscrewed.

Inside was a tiny memory card.

I stared.

“That was with me all these years?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't anyone take it?”

“Because nobody knew.”

Except Daniel.

Except Richard.

Maybe.

Detective Harris inserted the card into a secured computer.

Files appeared.

Financial records.

Names.

Dates.

Transfers.

Photographs.

Videos.

Then one file opened.

My father appeared on screen.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

I covered my mouth.

“Hello, sweetheart.”

I began crying.

His voice continued.

“If you're watching this, I failed to keep you out of this.”

He explained Richard's network.

He explained Daniel's role.

But then he said something I never expected.

“Daniel was originally sent to protect you.”

I stared at the screen.

“He wasn't supposed to hurt you.”

According to my father, Daniel had initially agreed to help investigators.

But Richard discovered the arrangement.

He threatened Daniel's mother.

Then Daniel switched sides.

My father continued.

“I don't know whether Daniel ever truly loved you.”

I cried harder.

“But I believe some part of him did.”

The video ended.

The room was silent.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?”

A man's voice whispered:

“You have the card.”

My blood froze.

“Who is this?”

“You know who.”

Richard.

He continued.

“If you give it to me, this ends.”

“No.”

“You don't understand what happens if it doesn't.”

“I don't care.”

“You should.”

He paused.

“Because I know where your daughter sleeps.”

My heart stopped.

I looked toward Lily's room.

The hospital suddenly felt terrifying.

Detective Harris took the phone.

“Richard Vale, this call is being recorded.”

Richard laughed.

“You think that matters?”

The call ended.

Security immediately locked down the floor.

Officers surrounded Lily's room.

But there was a problem.

Someone had already entered.

A nurse rushed toward us.

“Mrs. Carter?”

“Yes?”

“Your daughter's room is empty.”

I couldn't breathe.

“What?”

“The bed is empty.”

I ran.

Doctors shouted behind me.

Security moved.

The room was empty.

The blanket was on the floor.

The monitor still beeped.

The IV line had been disconnected.

And taped to the crib was a note.

I pulled it down.

Three words.

YOU WERE WARNED.

I screamed Lily's name.

Detective Harris looked at the security monitor.

A figure in hospital scrubs walked toward the service elevator.

Then the camera went black.

Someone inside the hospital had helped them.

May you like

And they had taken my daughter.
