Chapter 11 - THE BETRAYAL

Victor disappeared before police could arrest him.

His private jet had already left the country.

But he left something behind.

A safe deposit box.

Inside were documents connecting him to Melissa.

And one photograph.

It showed Victor standing beside my father.

Taken the week before my father's death.

I stared at it.

Then I noticed someone else in the background.

Ryan.

I turned to him.

“You were there.”

Ryan shook his head.

“I wasn't.”

The photograph was old.

He had been younger.

But it was unmistakably him.

“You were there.”

“I don't remember.”

“You don't remember meeting my father?”

Ryan looked devastated.

Then he said:

“I was there because your father asked me to come.”

“Why?”

“To warn me.”

“About what?”

“That Victor wanted control of the company.”

I stared at him.

“And you kept this from me for six years.”

“Yes.”

I stood.

“I don't know who you are anymore.”

Ryan didn't try to stop me.

Maybe he knew I was right.

Then Detective Hayes entered.

“We have a problem.”

“What?”

“Melissa escaped custody.”

My heart dropped.

“How?”

“Someone attacked the transport officers.”

“Is she coming here?”

“We don't know.”

Then my phone buzzed.

A photograph appeared.

Melissa.

Standing outside the hospital.

The caption said:

I'm coming for what you took from me.

I showed Detective Hayes.

She immediately ordered the hospital locked down.

But Melissa wasn't alone.

Security footage showed two people entering through a side entrance.

One was Melissa.

The other was Victor.

They were heading toward my floor.

Ryan stood.

“I'm going after them.”

“No,” Detective Hayes said.

Ryan ignored her.

Then the lights went out.

The hospital plunged into darkness.

People screamed.

Emergency lights flickered red.

I felt a hand grab mine.

I screamed.

But it wasn't Melissa.

It was Ryan.

“I'm here.”

Then a voice came through the darkness.

“Emma.”

Melissa.

She was standing at the end of the hallway.

May you like

And she was holding something.

A syringe.
