Chapter 11 - THE GIRL IN THE CABIN

The investigators traced the girl's last known location to a remote property.
We arrived before sunrise.
The cabin looked abandoned.
Then we heard knocking from inside.
A teenage girl was locked in a storage room.
She was terrified.
When she saw Ryan, she backed away.
“You.”
Ryan stopped.
“I won't hurt you.”
“You left my father.”
Ryan's face collapsed.
“I know.”
“You heard him screaming.”
He closed his eyes.
“I know.”
“You could have saved him.”
“I know.”
The girl began crying.
Then she looked at me.
“Are you his wife?”
“Yes.”
She nodded.
“Then you need to know.”
She told us everything.
Ryan had not caused the crash.
But he had been there.
He had been transporting money.
When the helicopter went down, the mechanic survived.
Ryan could have called emergency services immediately.
Instead, the men ordered him to leave.
Ryan obeyed.
That decision had haunted him.
But guilt wasn't innocence.
He had still walked away.
I looked at him.
“You let him die.”
Tears filled his eyes.
“Yes.”
It was the first time he had admitted it.
No excuses.
No justification.
Just one word.
“Yes.”
The girl handed the investigators a small camera.
“I recorded them.”
There was more evidence.
Enough to destroy the entire operation.
But one person was missing.
Brooke.
She had disappeared again.
And before leaving the cabin, we found a note.
It was written in her handwriting.
Ryan, I'm sorry. I couldn't let them take Natalie and Caleb.
I read it twice.

Then another line caught my attention.
The person giving them information is someone you trust.
