Chapter 15 - THE LAST DOOR

Thomas Reed arrived at my house at 8:03 p.m.

He walked through the front door as if he still belonged there.

For years, I had trusted him.

He had brought flowers when my father died.

He had attended my wedding.

He had sent Christmas gifts to my daughters.

He had called himself family.

Now I knew better.

He looked at me.

"You found the photograph."

I didn't answer.

Thomas sighed.

"I hoped you wouldn't."

"Why?"

"Because your father made everything harder than it needed to be."

"You killed him."

"No."

He smiled sadly.

"I didn't kill your father."

"Then what did you do?"

"I built the machine."

I stared.

"What machine?"

"The system."

He explained.

The shell companies.

The fake accounts.

The forged documents.

The transfers.

The pressure on Griffin.

The manipulation of Ilsa.

Evan.

Marcus.

Everyone had been a piece.

But Thomas had been the one moving them.

"Why my family?"

"Because your father discovered me."

"And the house?"

"The house contains the master ledger."

My heart stopped.

"The vault."

He nodded.

"The real vault."

I realized the underground room wasn't the final destination.

It was a decoy.

The true vault was somewhere else.

Thomas smiled.

"Your father knew I would search the obvious places."

"Where is it?"

"You'll never find it."

I stepped closer.

"My father left clues."

Thomas laughed.

"Your father loved games."

I looked at the dining room.

Then at the staircase.

Then at the old grandfather clock.

My father had always told me the clock was broken.

It wasn't.

I walked toward it.

Thomas's smile disappeared.

I opened the clock.

Inside was a metal panel.

A fingerprint scanner.

I placed my hand on it.

The panel opened.

Inside was the master ledger.

Thomas stepped forward.

Police entered the house.

He froze.

"You called them."

"Yes."

He looked at Griffin.

"You betrayed me."

Griffin shook his head.

"No."

Thomas looked at me.

"You think this ends with me?"

"No."

I held up the ledger.

"It ends with everyone."

Federal agents entered.

Thomas was arrested.

Evan was arrested three days later at the border.

Amelia cooperated with investigators.

Marcus Vale accepted a plea agreement in exchange for testimony.

Ilsa was charged with fraud, conspiracy, and attempted theft.

And Griffin?

He signed every document necessary to protect the girls.

Then he left the house.

For good.

Months later, the dining room looked different.

Not because I had changed the furniture.

Because the girls had changed.

Merisette sat at the table doing homework.

Tansy was drawing.

I watched them laugh.

Two ordinary plates sat in front of them.

Not expensive china.

Not family heirlooms.

Just plates.

But they were theirs.

Griffin visited occasionally.

He was trying.

I didn't know whether we would ever be married again.

Maybe we wouldn't.

Some wounds don't disappear because someone says sorry.

But he was finally becoming the father our daughters deserved.

One evening, Tansy looked up.

"Mom?"

"Yes?"

"Are we real family now?"

I smiled.

"You always were."

She thought about that.

Then she nodded.

Merisette looked at me.

"Grandma said girls weren't real family."

"I know."

"She was wrong."

"Very wrong."

Tansy lifted her fork.

"Can I have dessert?"

I laughed.

"Of course."

She smiled.

Then the doorbell rang.

I froze.

Nobody was expected.

I walked toward the front door.

A plain white envelope lay on the porch.

No name.

No return address.

I opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

My father.

Alive.

Standing beside a woman I had never seen before.

On the back, someone had written:

YOU FOUND THE MONEY.

I turned the photograph over.

Below it was another sentence.

NOW FIND YOUR FATHER.

My hands began to shake.

Because my father had supposedly died twelve years ago.

But the photograph was dated three weeks ago.

And suddenly, the forty million dollars wasn't the biggest secret my family had ever kept from me.

May you like

My father was alive.

And someone had just told me where to find him.
