Chapter 14 - THE BROTHER

My uncle chose the location.
Of course he did.
He always had.
A private estate outside Richmond.
An old property belonging to my father.
I remembered it from childhood.
Summer vacations.
Fishing.
Family dinners.
My uncle Daniel had always been the funny one.
My father was serious.
Daniel was charming.
He could make anyone laugh.
Now I understood why.
Charm was his weapon.
I arrived alone.
At least that's what Daniel believed.
The estate was surrounded by security.
I entered through the front door.
Daniel was waiting beside the fireplace.
He was seventy-two now.
Silver hair.
Perfect suit.
Calm smile.
He looked exactly like the uncle I remembered.
“Come here.”
I didn't move.
“You used to run into my arms.”
“I was a child.”
“You were my favorite.”
“And you killed my father.”
His smile disappeared.
“No.”
“You were there.”
“Yes.”
“You were the Director.”
“Yes.”
“You built Northbridge.”
“Yes.”
“You manipulated Ryan.”
“Yes.”
I stared at him.
“Why?”
He walked toward the window.
“Because your father became obsessed.”
“With what?”
“Control.”
I laughed.
“You're talking about control?”
“Yes.”
“He wanted to expose the network.”
“He wanted to destroy it.”
“And you?”
“I wanted to control it.”
At least he was honest.
“What did my father discover?”
Daniel turned.
“That the government is not as clean as people think.”
“That doesn't justify what you did.”
“No.”
He looked almost sad.
“But power rarely asks permission.”
I hated how calm he was.
“How did he die?”
Daniel's face changed.
“Your father was going to expose everyone.”
“So you poisoned him.”
“No.”
“Then who?”
“Evelyn.”
I froze.
“She killed him?”
“She believed she was saving the network.”
“And you allowed it.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I needed the archive.”
I held up the pendant.
“You never got it.”
“No.”
“That's why you needed me.”
“Yes.”
He smiled.
“You're the final key.”
I stared at him.
“You could have simply asked.”
He laughed.
“Your father made sure you would never willingly help me.”
“You could have told me the truth.”
“He made sure you wouldn't believe it.”
I stepped closer.
“You destroyed my marriage.”
“I didn't destroy it.”
“You used Ryan.”
“I gave him choices.”
“You threatened him.”
“I offered him survival.”
“You turned my husband against me.”
Daniel smiled.
“No.”
He leaned closer.
“I showed him who he already was.”
I hated the truth in that sentence.
Ryan had made his own decisions.
Daniel had simply exploited them.
“Why shave my head?”
Daniel looked surprised.
“That wasn't my idea.”
“Linda.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because humiliation breaks people.”
He smiled.
“But it didn't break you.”
“No.”
“It strengthened you.”
“Yes.”
He sighed.
“Your father would be proud.”
“Don't say his name.”
Daniel stared at me.
“He loved you.”
“You murdered him.”
“No.”
His voice hardened.
“Your father chose his mission over his family.”
I shook my head.
“And you chose power over yours.”
For the first time, anger appeared in his eyes.
Good.
I had found something human.
“You think you're different from me?”
“Yes.”
“You're a soldier.”
“I am.”
“You follow orders.”
“When they're lawful.”
He smiled.
“You think morality protects you.”
“No.”
I raised my chin.
“Training does.”
Daniel laughed.
Then the doors opened.
Ryan entered.
My heart tightened.
“Ryan?”
He looked at me.
Then at Daniel.
“I brought what you wanted.”
He held up the pendant.
I stared.
I had the pendant.
So did he.
A fake.
Daniel realized it too late.
“Where is the real one?”
I smiled.
“With Maya.”
His expression changed.
Outside, sirens began.
Daniel's security team panicked.
I stepped backward.
“You wanted my father's archive.”
I pulled out my phone.
“You're about to get something else.”
I pressed a button.
The archive transmission began.
Every name.
Every account.
Every document.
Released.
Daniel stared at me.
“What have you done?”
“Ended your war.”
“No.”
He looked at the screen.
“That's impossible.”
“Not anymore.”
Federal agents stormed the estate.
Daniel tried to escape.
Ryan blocked him.
For the first time, my husband stood between me and danger instead of creating it.
Daniel looked at him.
“You ungrateful little fool.”
Ryan shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at me.
“I finally chose the right side.”
Daniel was arrested.
As they took him away, he looked back at me.
“You think this ends with me?”
I said nothing.
He smiled.
“There are still forty-two names.”
Then he disappeared.
I stood in the doorway.
The sun was rising.
For the first time in years, I felt free.
But I knew he was right.
One man had been arrested.
The network was wounded.
Not destroyed.
And I had one final battle left.
May you like
The battle against the people who had helped Daniel.
The forty-two names.
