Chapter 6 - THE TRUTH ABOUT MY MARRIAGE

The next morning, David filed another emergency motion.

This time, it wasn't just about custody.

It was about fraud.

Forgery.

Financial misconduct.

And potential criminal activity.

Mark's attorney requested a private meeting.

I agreed.

Mark sat across from me in David's conference room.

He looked like a completely different man.

“I never wanted you hurt.”

I stared at him.

“You married me knowing my family owned your company.”

“Yes.”

“You hid financial records.”

“Yes.”

“You let your mother humiliate our daughters.”

His eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“And you still expect me to believe you loved me?”

“I did.”

“Maybe.”

I looked down.

“But love without honesty is just another kind of betrayal.”

He cried.

I didn't.

I had cried enough.

Then he told me everything.

Diane had discovered my grandfather's trust years before our wedding.

She believed marrying me would give the family control.

Mark resisted.

But Diane threatened him.

She told him that if he didn't cooperate, she would expose financial crimes involving his father.

His father had been diverting company money.

Mark agreed to help.

Then he met me.

And everything changed.

But instead of telling me the truth, he continued the lie.

“Why didn't you leave?” I asked.

“Because I was scared.”

“You were scared?”

“Yes.”

I stared at him.

“You weren't scared when you let your mother destroy Emma's birthday.”

He looked down.

“I know.”

“You weren't scared when you told me she was right.”

“I know.”

“Then don't ask me to save you from the consequences.”

He nodded.

“I won't.”

That surprised me.

Then he reached into his pocket.

He placed a small flash drive on the table.

“What is this?”

“Everything.”

I frowned.

“Everything?”

“Mom's records. Dad's records. My records.”

“Why give them to me?”

“Because you deserve the truth.”

I looked at David.

He nodded.

We opened the files.

There were hundreds.

Emails.

Bank transfers.

Scanned documents.

Voice recordings.

Then we found one file labeled:

PROJECT EMILY.

My blood went cold.

David opened it.

The first recording was Diane's voice.

“Once she signs the transfer, the trust becomes irrelevant.”

Another voice.

Mark.

“What if she refuses?”

Diane answered:

“Then make her want to leave.”

I covered my mouth.

The next recording was worse.

Diane said:

“Girls are a problem. A grandson would make the family easier to control.”

Mark responded:

“Emily won't agree to another pregnancy just because you want a boy.”

Diane laughed.

“Then make her think it's her fault.”

I closed my eyes.

For years, she had criticized my parenting.

My cooking.

My body.

My career.

My daughters.

All of it had been deliberate.

Not random cruelty.

A strategy.

Then we heard Diane say something that made the entire room freeze.

“If Emily ever discovers the trust, we'll use the children.”

David paused the recording.

I whispered:

“Use them how?”

Mark looked at me.

“I didn't know about that part.”

We played the next file.

Diane was speaking to someone.

“Girls are emotional. The court will believe their father needs stability.”

A man's voice answered:

“And if that fails?”

Diane replied:

“Then we'll make Emily look unstable.”

My hands began shaking.

David immediately closed the laptop.

“That's enough for today.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“Keep going.”

“Emily—”

“I need to know.”

He opened the file again.

The final recording contained a sentence that changed everything.

Diane said:

“Once the divorce begins, we take the girls.”

I stared at Mark.

He looked horrified.

“I swear I didn't know.”

For the first time, I believed him.

But belief wasn't forgiveness.

Outside the building, reporters were already waiting.

Someone had leaked the divorce.

One reporter shouted:

“Mrs. Mercer! Is it true your husband is accusing you of financial abuse?”

Another yelled:

“Did you abandon your children?”

Mark stepped toward the cameras.

I stopped him.

“No.”

He looked at me.

“This time, I speak.”

I walked outside.

The cameras turned toward me.

I took one breath.

Then said:

“My children were never abandoned.”

I looked directly into the cameras.

“They were protected.”

May you like

And somewhere behind the crowd, Diane was watching.

She looked terrified.
