Chapter 9 - MARGARET'S CONFESSION

Margaret sat behind the glass.

She looked nothing like the monster I had imagined.

She looked ordinary.

Gray hair.

Elegant clothes.

Calm eyes.

She smiled when I entered.

“Thomas.”

I stopped.

Nobody had called me that in years.

“You know who I am.”

“I always have.”

“Why did you kill my mother?”

Her smile disappeared.

“Because she knew too much.”

“And my father?”

“Because he betrayed me.”

“You threatened my wife.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To force you to abandon the trust.”

“You could have taken the money without hurting anyone.”

Margaret laughed softly.

“You still don't understand your father.”

“What?”

“He didn't just leave you money.”

She leaned closer.

“He left you control.”

“Control of what?”

“The company.”

I frowned.

She continued.

“Your father built an empire that was worth hundreds of millions. The trust controls the voting shares.”

My blood ran cold.

“If you inherit it, you control everything.”

“So that's what this is.”

“Yes.”

“Why not simply buy me out?”

“Because your father knew I would.”

She smiled.

“He designed the trust so I could never purchase it.”

I stared at her.

“Then you killed him.”

“Yes.”

The room went silent.

She said it without hesitation.

“I caused the accident.”

I felt sick.

“And Evelyn?”

“I pushed her.”

“Why?”

“She tried to expose me.”

I stood.

“You killed my mother.”

“Yes.”

“You tried to kill me.”

“Yes.”

“You attacked my wife through my family.”

“Yes.”

“Why confess now?”

Margaret smiled.

“Because I have one final piece of information.”

“What?”

She leaned forward.

“Daniel isn't the mastermind.”

I stared.

“Who is?”

Margaret looked through the glass.

Straight at Kareen.

“Your mother.”

I turned.

Kareen was standing outside.

Her face was expressionless.

Margaret continued.

“Kareen knew everything.”

I stared at my mother.

Margaret smiled.

May you like

“And she wasn't protecting you.”

“She was protecting herself.”
