Chapter 10 - THE TRUTH THAT SET US FREE

We didn't speak on the drive home.

Alora sat beside me.

Lily slept in the back seat.

Mara drove.

The silence was unbearable.

Finally, Alora whispered:

“I was there.”

I looked at her.

“The night your father died.”

“You told me you were eighteen.”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

She cried silently.

“My father confronted yours.”

“Why?”

“Because your father discovered that my father had been working for Kareen.”

I stared ahead.

“My father knew?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did he trust him?”

“He didn't.”

“What happened?”

Alora took a shaky breath.

“Kareen ordered my father to kill him.”

My hands tightened.

“But he refused.”

“So Kareen killed him?”

“No.”

I looked at her.

“Then who?”

“My father.”

The words destroyed me.

“Why?”

“He thought your father was going to kill me.”

Silence.

“He made a mistake.”

“A mistake?”

“He fired one shot.”

I closed my eyes.

“And my father?”

“Dead.”

“What happened afterward?”

“Kareen arrived.”

Alora's voice broke.

“She told my father that if he didn't take the blame, she'd kill me.”

“So he confessed?”

“Yes.”

“And then?”

“Kareen killed him too.”

I couldn't breathe.

“So everyone lied.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“You married me.”

“I loved you.”

“Did you marry me because of the trust?”

She looked horrified.

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because I fell in love with you before I knew who you were.”

I looked at her.

She was crying.

“I spent years trying to decide whether telling you would destroy your life.”

“It already did.”

“I know.”

We returned to the estate.

Police had searched the entire property.

They found hidden cameras.

Financial records.

Forged signatures.

Documents connecting Kareen to the security company.

The safe contained one final compartment.

Inside was my father's original letter.

I opened it.

My son,

If you are reading this, then the truth has finally reached you.

I failed to protect Clara.

I failed to protect Lily.

But I never stopped loving you.

Kareen will tell you that blood determines family. She is wrong.

Family is the person who protects you when protecting you costs everything.

I looked at Alora.

Then Lily.

Then Mara.

My eyes filled with tears.

The investigation lasted eleven months.

Kareen was convicted on multiple charges.

The security company collapsed.

The hidden accounts were recovered.

The trust was restored.

Lily became legally recognized as my sister.

And Alora gave birth to our daughter six months later.

We named her Clara.

On the day we brought her home, I stood in the nursery holding her.

Lily sat beside me.

“Is she really my sister?”

I smiled.

“Yes.”

“Will Grandma hurt her?”

“No.”

I looked toward the window.

“Never again.”

Mara entered the room.

She handed me an envelope.

“Found this in Dad's things.”

I opened it.

There was one final photograph.

My father.

Clara.

Evelyn.

And me as a baby.

On the back were four words:

We were trying to save you.

I looked at my daughter.

For years, I thought my inheritance was money.

It wasn't.

It was the truth.

It was my sister.

It was the woman who stayed beside me when my entire family collapsed.

It was the little girl sleeping peacefully in my arms.

And it was the chance to build the family my father had wanted me to have.

Alora came to my side.

“Are you okay?”

I kissed her forehead.

“For the first time.”

She smiled.

Outside, rain began falling softly over the Montecito hills.

The same kind of rain that had been falling the night I came home.

But this time, it didn't sound like a warning.

It sounded like a beginning.

I looked down at Clara.

She opened her tiny eyes.

And for one brief second, I saw my father's face in hers.

I whispered:

“You're safe now.”

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

No one spoke.

I looked at Alora.

The line remained silent.

Then a man's voice whispered:

“Kareen didn't tell you everything.”

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Alora's smile disappeared.

And somewhere far away, behind the walls of a prison cell, the woman who had destroyed my family was still keeping one final secret.

A secret about my father's death.

May you like

A secret about Clara.

And a secret that could prove the nightmare wasn't over.
