Chapter 9 - THE LAST LIE

The police reopened Eleanor's disappearance.
This time, Richard gave them everything.
The recordings.
The documents.
The photographs.
The financial evidence.
And Daniel's testimony.
David disappeared.
His offices were empty.
His bank accounts were drained.
His private jet was gone.
Richard knew he was running.
But he also knew David wouldn't leave without one final move.
That evening, Richard received a video.
David appeared on screen.
"Richard."
Richard watched silently.
"You've uncovered more than I expected."
David smiled.
"But you're still missing one thing."
"What?"
"The reason."
Richard leaned closer.
David continued.
"Do you really think I did all this for money?"
"No."
"Good."
David laughed.
"I did it because people like us should decide who controls the future."
Richard felt disgusted.
"You're insane."
"Perhaps."
David leaned toward the camera.
"But your children are extraordinary."
Richard's jaw tightened.
"Don't call them that."
"They are assets."
"They're children."
"They're bloodlines."
Richard stood.
"They are my sons."
David smiled.
"That's exactly why you were chosen."
Richard froze.
"Chosen?"
"Yes."
David explained.
Years ago, before the boys were born, Richard's business had nearly collapsed.
David had secretly arranged financing.
In exchange, Richard signed agreements he barely remembered.
Those agreements included guardianship clauses connected to the children's trust.
Richard realized he'd been manipulated before the boys were even born.
"Where are you?"
David smiled.
"Come alone."
"Where?"
"Your old hotel."
Richard knew exactly which one.
The first hotel he had ever built.
Eleanor grabbed his arm.
"Don't go."
"I have to."
"No."
"He's expecting me."
"That's why it's a trap."
Richard looked at her.
"Then we'll make him think it worked."
They planned carefully.
Richard entered the hotel alone.
Security surrounded the building.
David waited in the ballroom.
"You came."
Richard walked forward.
"Where are my boys?"
"Safe."
"Where?"
David smiled.
"You still don't understand."
Richard stopped.
"What?"
"The boys were never the target."
"Then what is?"
David pointed toward the stage.
A screen descended.
A photograph appeared.
It was Rebecca.
Standing beside another man.
Richard stared.
He recognized him.
Jonathan Reed.
But Jonathan wasn't dead.
He was alive.
And standing beside David.
Richard's blood ran cold.
David smiled.
"Meet the real architect."
Jonathan stepped from the shadows.
"Hello, Richard."
Richard stared.
"You've been dead for two years."
Jonathan smiled.
"Officially."
Richard suddenly understood.
Rebecca hadn't been killed by David alone.
Jonathan had faked his death.
He had controlled the records.
The police.
The financial system.
Everything.
Jonathan looked at Richard.
"You were always the easiest part."
Richard clenched his fists.
"You took my wife."
"Yes."
"You threatened my children."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Jonathan smiled.
"Because Rebecca betrayed us."
Richard froze.
"Rebecca?"
"She tried to expose the operation."
"And Thomas?"
"Thomas was never supposed to survive."
Richard's eyes filled with rage.
"But he did."
"Because Eleanor saved him."
Jonathan looked toward the exit.
"Where is she?"
Richard smiled.
"Somewhere you'll never find her."
Jonathan laughed.
"You brought your family here, didn't you?"
Richard's smile disappeared.
Jonathan pressed a button.
A screen appeared.
Eleanor and the boys were visible inside a room.
Richard's blood froze.
He had been followed.
The entire plan had failed.
Jonathan leaned closer.
"Now you understand."
Richard stared at the screen.
Then Marcus looked directly into the camera.
And smiled.
Richard realized something.
Marcus wasn't afraid.
He was signaling.
Three taps against the window.
Their secret signal.
Richard understood.
The boys had a plan.
May you like
And for the first time, David and Jonathan had made one fatal mistake.
They had underestimated the children.
