Chapter 11 - VANESSA'S CONFESSION

Vanessa confessed for almost two hours.
She admitted the gambling.
The debt.
The forged documents.
The plan to use my work schedule against me.
But then she said something that changed everything.
“I didn't want to hurt Alice.”
“You slapped her.”
“I know.”
“Why?”
“Because Dad told me she had the documents.”
“What documents?”
“The insurance paperwork.”
I stared at her.
“What did Alice see?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't know.”
“You do.”
She looked at me.
“Your father thought Alice had found something else.”
“What?”
“A recording.”
My heart stopped.
“What recording?”
Vanessa said my father had been secretly recording conversations inside the house.
One recording supposedly captured my mother admitting she had moved money from my investment account.
Another allegedly contained a conversation about taking Alice away from me.
My father had hidden the recordings.
But someone had copied them.
“Who?”
Vanessa looked at me.
“I think Alice did.”
My daughter's name hit me like ice water.
“She couldn't.”
“She knows how to use your old tablet.”
I remembered.
The tablet I had given Alice for school games.
The tablet connected automatically to my parents' Wi-Fi.
If she had accidentally recorded something…
I drove home.
Alice was asleep.
I found the tablet.
There were hundreds of short audio files.
Most were meaningless.
Then I saw one dated three weeks earlier.
I played it.
At first, static.
Then my mother's voice.
“If Carolyn stops paying, we lose everything.”
My father's voice:
“Then we make sure she doesn't stop.”
Then Vanessa:
“What about Alice?”
My father:
“She'll be the leverage.”
I stopped the recording.
My hands were shaking.
There were more.
One contained my mother saying:
“Once Carolyn is declared unstable, Vanessa can petition for custody.”
Another:
“And the insurance?”
“Keep it quiet.”
I stared at the screen.
Then another recording began automatically.
My father's voice.
But this time he sounded terrified.
“Vanessa, you don't understand. Alice knows about the account.”
Vanessa replied:
“She is seven.”
“She remembers everything.”
Then my father said:
“That's why she cannot talk to Carolyn.”
The recording ended.
I sat in the dark.
My family hadn't simply made a cruel decision on Christmas.
May you like
They had been building a plan.
And my daughter had accidentally become their biggest problem.
