Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN WHO CAME BACK

Three weeks later, the Prescott empire was still standing.

Barely.

Margaret was arrested after an international manhunt.

The fraudulent accounts were exposed.

The foundation recovered most of the stolen money.

Caroline became interim CEO.

Ethan refused to return to the company.

And Daniel survived.

But he hadn't told me everything.

Not yet.

I visited him every day.

On the twenty-first day, he finally opened his eyes.

“Madison.”

“I'm here.”

He smiled weakly.

“You look like her.”

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

“Tell me the truth.”

“I will.”

“Everything.”

He nodded.

Then he reached beneath his pillow and pulled out a small key.

“What is this?”

“Your mother's.”

“To what?”

“A storage locker.”

“Where?”

“Penn Station.”

My heart raced.

“What is inside?”

“Answers.”

Ethan stood behind me.

“You knew about this?”

Daniel nodded.

“I didn't trust anyone else.”

We went that afternoon.

The locker contained one suitcase.

Inside were photographs.

Letters.

Medical records.

And one video cassette.

Ethan found an old player.

The screen flickered.

My mother appeared.

She looked younger.

Healthy.

Alive.

I stopped breathing.

“Madison…”

Her voice trembled.

“If you're watching this, I'm sorry.”

Tears ran down my face.

“I wanted to tell you everything.”

She looked directly into the camera.

“Your father didn't abandon us.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Your grandfather didn't kill me.”

I stared at the screen.

“I disappeared because I discovered something worse.”

My mother's face became frightened.

“Someone inside the Prescott family was selling people.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“What?”

She continued.

“Children.”

My blood went cold.

“Illegal adoption networks. Human trafficking. False identities.”

She looked terrified.

“Charles discovered it.”

“And when he tried to stop it, they threatened his family.”

She took a breath.

“The person running it wasn't Margaret.”

I looked at Ethan.

The room seemed to tilt.

My mother said the final words:

“It was Henry.”

I turned slowly.

Henry stood in the doorway.

He looked devastated.

“That's not true.”

The video continued.

“My father trusted him.”

“Henry betrayed him.”

“Daniel tried to stop him.”

“And I ran.”

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

Henry shook his head.

“I swear to you…”

I stepped backward.

“Don't.”

“Madison.”

“You knew my mother.”

“Yes.”

“You knew she was alive.”

Henry's face collapsed.

“I thought she was dead.”

“Then why were you looking for her?”

He couldn't answer.

Ethan stepped between us.

“Dad.”

Henry whispered:

“I made one mistake.”

“What mistake?”

“I trusted the wrong person.”

“Who?”

Henry looked at me.

Then toward the window.

“She isn't dead.”

My heart stopped.

“Who?”

Henry whispered:

“Your mother.”

The front door opened.

A woman stood there.

Gray hair.

Thin face.

Tired eyes.

But I knew her immediately.

My knees gave out.

“Mom?”

She smiled through tears.

“Hi, Maddy.”

I couldn't move.

I couldn't breathe.

Twenty-three years of grief disappeared in one second.

I ran to her.

She held me.

And for the first time in my life, I understood why she had always told me kindness was the only thing no one could take away.

She had survived because someone had shown her kindness too.

I pulled back.

“Why didn't you come home?”

She looked at Henry.

“Because he wouldn't let me.”

I turned.

Henry closed his eyes.

“I'm sorry.”

My mother stepped forward.

“He thought he was protecting you.”

“From what?”

She looked toward the window.

“From the real enemy.”

Ethan frowned.

“Margaret?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

My mother looked at all of us.

“The person who created the entire conspiracy.”

She reached into her coat.

Pulled out a photograph.

And placed it on the table.

I stared at it.

The man in the photograph was older.

Powerful.

Smiling.

And standing beside every Prescott family member at every major event for the last thirty years.

I knew him.

Everyone knew him.

The most trusted attorney in Manhattan.

The man who had supposedly helped save Prescott Global.

The man who had supposedly helped investigate the fraud.

Caroline's father.

My mother whispered:

“Edmund Mercer.”

Ethan's face went white.

“Caroline's father?”

“Yes.”

“He died fifteen years ago.”

My mother shook her head.

“No.”

She pointed at the photograph.

“He changed his name.”

“What's his name now?”

My mother looked directly at me.

“Jonathan Hayes.”

My blood froze.

My mother's maiden name was Hayes.

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?”

She took my hand.

“It means, Maddy…”

She began to cry.

“…the man who has been hunting you isn't a Prescott.”

“He's family.”

And somewhere outside the apartment, a black car stopped at the curb.

The driver's door opened.

A man stepped out.

He looked up at the building.

May you like

Then smiled.

Because he had finally found me.
