Chapter 9 - THE HALE ESTATE

The Hale estate stood behind enormous iron gates.
Security cameras covered every angle.
Two guards watched the driveway.
We couldn't simply walk in.
Fortunately, Victor had made one mistake.
He believed I was desperate.
So I let him believe it.
I called him.
"I'll sign."
Silence.
"You've changed your mind."
"I want my wife safe."
"And the money?"
"You can have it."
He laughed.
"Finally."
"I want my son."
"You'll see him."
"When?"
"Tonight."
"Where?"
"The estate."
I agreed.
But I wasn't going alone.
Marcus had contacted federal authorities.
They were already building a case.
The problem was timing.
If Victor suspected anything, Lucas could disappear.
At 10:00 p.m., I entered the estate.
Victor stood in the grand foyer.
He looked nothing like a criminal.
Perfect suit.
Perfect hair.
Calm smile.
"Welcome home."
I stared at him.
"You stole my child."
He smiled.
"You abandoned him."
"I never abandoned him."
"You believed a piece of paper."
"Because you forged it."
He shrugged.
"People believe what they're told."
I looked around.
"Where's Lucas?"
"First the documents."
He placed a folder on the table.
I opened it.
Everything.
The house.
The accounts.
The investments.
My business.
Even the retirement package.
I looked at Victor.
"You really think I'm signing?"
"You will."
"Why?"
He leaned closer.
"Because you love your family."
Then a door opened upstairs.
Lucas appeared.
Seven years old.
Small.
Confused.
His eyes met mine.
Everything stopped.
I whispered:
"Lucas."
He stared.
"Who are you?"
My heart broke.
"I'm your father."
He looked at Victor.
Victor smiled.
"He's lying."
Lucas looked back at me.
I stepped forward.
"I have your mother's eyes."
Lucas stared.
Then touched his own cheek.
"Mom?"
"She's waiting for you."
Victor grabbed his shoulder.
"Enough."
Lucas flinched.
I saw it.
That tiny movement.
Fear.
The same fear I'd seen in Natalie.
My voice became quiet.
"Lucas, do you remember a woman with a scarf?"
His eyes widened.
"Mom."
Victor turned.
I moved.
Marcus's signal came through my earpiece.
NOW.
The doors burst open.
Federal agents flooded the estate.
Victor's guards ran.
Victor grabbed Lucas.
I lunged.
We crashed into a table.
Victor tried to pull Lucas away.
Lucas screamed.
"Mom!"
I grabbed my son's arm.
"I've got you!"
Victor was arrested.
But as they handcuffed him, he smiled.
"You think this ends here?"
I looked at him.
"No."
He laughed.
"You have no idea what your wife carries inside her."
I froze.
"What?"
He smiled.
"Ask her about the night Lucas was born."
Then he was gone.
I took Lucas outside.
He was shaking.
I held him.
"It's okay."
He whispered:
"Are you really my dad?"
Tears filled my eyes.
"Yes."
"Are you taking me home?"
I hugged him tighter.
"Yes."
For the first time in seven years, I held my son.
But Victor's final words wouldn't leave my mind.
What happened the night Lucas was born?
And what had Natalie been hiding?
When we returned to the safe house, Natalie was waiting.
The moment she saw Lucas—
she collapsed.
"Baby."
Lucas stared at her.
Then slowly walked forward.
"Mom?"
Natalie covered her mouth.
He ran into her arms.
They cried together.
I stood there watching them.
Seven years.
Seven years stolen.
Then Natalie looked at me.
Her expression changed.
Fear.
"Victor told you something."
"Yes."
"What?"
I said:
"He told me to ask you about the night Lucas was born."
She closed her eyes.
"I was afraid you'd find out."
"What?"
She whispered:
"Lucas wasn't supposed to survive."
I stared at her.
"Why?"
She looked at our son.
Then back at me.
May you like
"Because someone tried to kill him."
