Chapter 15 - CHRISTMAS MORNING

I couldn't speak.

The video continued.

Kane looked at Dad.

"So your son came home."

Dad nodded.

"He's ready."

"For what?"

"To finish this."

The video ended.

I turned toward my father.

"What is this?"

He looked devastated.

"I can explain."

"Then explain."

He sat down.

"For years, I pretended to work against Kane."

"Because?"

"Because I was working with him."

Mom closed her eyes.

"Not willingly."

Dad explained the truth.

Kane had kidnapped Vanessa when she was nineteen.

He threatened to kill her.

Dad agreed to cooperate.

But instead of helping Kane control the archive, Dad secretly documented everything.

He had been building a case.

Vanessa had eventually escaped.

But by then, Kane controlled enough people to make arrest impossible.

So Dad waited.

He needed someone outside the system.

Someone Kane didn't know how to control.

Me.

My father had sent me away so I could build a legitimate business, establish financial independence and create connections far beyond Kane's reach.

The money he secretly sent me wasn't charity.

It was protection.

"You could have told me."

"I wanted you to hate me."

"Why?"

"Because hatred was safer than attachment."

I looked at Mom.

"And you?"

She nodded.

"I knew."

The truth hurt.

But it also explained everything.

The broken glasses.

The untouched medicine.

The hidden cellar.

The forged signature.

Vanessa's betrayal.

The archive.

The men who came after us.

None of it had been one simple crime.

It had been fourteen years of secrets collapsing at once.

Then the front door opened.

Federal agents entered.

One approached me.

"Mr. Bennett."

"What?"

"We decrypted the last file."

He handed me a tablet.

"This changes everything."

I watched.

The video showed Kane meeting dozens of powerful people.

Politicians.

Business owners.

Judges.

Police officials.

But then the final frame appeared.

A name.

BENNETT FAMILY — ORIGINAL TRUST HOLDER.

I looked at Dad.

"What does that mean?"

He took a breath.

"Your grandfather didn't steal the archive."

"Then?"

"He was appointed to protect it."

"By whom?"

Dad looked at the ceiling.

"By the people who created it."

"Who?"

He shook his head.

"That's what I never discovered."

The federal agent stepped forward.

"We did."

He turned the tablet around.

At the bottom of the screen was a seal.

I didn't recognize it.

But Mom did.

She whispered:

"No."

"What?"

She looked at me.

"The archive wasn't built to expose criminals."

"Then what was it built for?"

Her voice trembled.

"To protect the people who were hunting them."

I stared at the screen.

The seal belonged to a private organization older than any of us.

The federal agent said:

"And they've just sent us a message."

"What message?"

He handed me a piece of paper.

Five words were written on it.

THE BENNETT FAMILY IS NEXT.

Outside, snow began falling.

Christmas morning had arrived.

For the first time in twelve years, my entire family was under the same roof.

But nobody was celebrating.

Because now we knew the truth.

Kane had never been the final enemy.

He had only been the first door.

And somewhere beyond that door was an organization powerful enough to make my parents disappear, erase my uncle's death, corrupt a sheriff's department, manipulate records and wait fourteen years for me to come home.

I folded the message.

Dad looked at me.

"I'm sorry."

I looked at the Christmas tree.

At the ornaments from my childhood.

At the house where I had once believed nothing bad could happen.

Then I said:

"You spent twelve years protecting me."

Dad nodded.

"Now it's my turn."

Mom stared at me.

"Michael, you don't know what you're saying."

I picked up the brass key.

"I know exactly what I'm saying."

I walked toward the basement.

Vanessa called after me.

"Where are you going?"

I stopped.

Then I looked back.

"To find out who built the archive."

No one spoke.

I opened the cellar door.

The darkness below seemed deeper than before.

But this time, I wasn't afraid.

Because twelve years ago, I had left this house believing my family had rejected me.

Now I understood.

They hadn't sent me away because they didn't love me.

They had sent me away because they did.

And somewhere beneath this house was the truth my grandfather had hidden.

A truth powerful enough to bring down Victor Kane.

A truth dangerous enough to make my parents prisoners.

And perhaps the only truth that could keep my family alive.

I stepped into the darkness.

Behind me, the Christmas lights flickered.

Then—

three weak knocks came from beneath the floor.

I froze.

Knock.

Pause.

Knock.

Pause.

Knock.

But my parents were standing behind me.

Vanessa was upstairs.

Kane was in federal custody.

So who was knocking?

I slowly turned toward the hidden tunnel.

Dad's face went white.

Mom whispered:

"Michael..."

"What?"

She pointed toward the floor.

"There is another cellar."

I looked at the bricks.

A seam appeared where no door had been before.

Then a small metal panel opened.

Inside was a photograph.

My grandfather.

My father.

My mother.

Vanessa.

And me.

The photograph had been taken yesterday.

On the back were six words:

WELCOME HOME, MICHAEL. WE'VE BEEN WAITING.

And underneath those words was a name.

A name my family had never spoken.

A name that would change everything.

ELIAS BENNETT.

My grandfather.

The man who had supposedly died twenty-three years ago.

The man whose grave we had visited every Christmas.

The man whose secrets had started this entire nightmare.

May you like

He was alive.

And he was waiting beneath the house.
