Chapter 10 - JUSTICE

We found Evelyn alive.

Bruised.

Terrified.

But alive.

She had been attacked in her home.

The police found fingerprints.

Messages.

Evidence of surveillance.

And eventually, the person behind the entire operation.

Vanessa Gray.

She had been working with my father for sixteen years.

She had forged documents.

Created shell companies.

Manipulated medical records.

And helped transfer the property.

But there was one thing she hadn't counted on.

My grandfather had documented everything.

The flash drive contained years of financial records.

Bank transfers.

Emails.

Property documents.

Photographs.

And one final recording.

My grandfather's voice.

"If anything happens to me, Gary is responsible for the theft from the trust. Vanessa Gray is his accomplice. I am leaving this recording because I believe they intend to silence me."

The room went silent.

Grandma covered her mouth.

I cried.

Not because I had lost Grandpa again.

But because, sixteen years later, his voice had finally come back to protect us.

The arrests happened two weeks later.

My father was charged with fraud, forgery, financial exploitation, and conspiracy.

My mother faced multiple charges related to the fraudulent documents and theft.

Vanessa was arrested after investigators connected her to the shell companies and the forged petition.

The attorney lost his license and faced charges of conspiracy and document fraud.

The property was returned to Grandma.

The trust was restored.

And every dollar that could be traced was recovered.

Not all of it.

But enough.

Grandma moved into a small house near me.

One morning, months later, I found her sitting on the porch drinking coffee.

She looked healthier.

Happier.

Free.

I sat beside her.

"You know," she said, "you don't have to keep sending me seventy percent of your paycheck."

I laughed.

"I know."

"I have my own money."

"I know."

"And I'm perfectly capable of buying my own groceries."

"I know."

She smiled.

"Then why do you keep doing it?"

I looked at her.

"Because you raised me."

She reached over and squeezed my hand.

"You saved me."

"No."

I shook my head.

"You saved me first."

She smiled.

For the first time in months, there was no fear in her eyes.

No locked doors.

No threats.

No forged signatures.

Just sunlight.

Then my phone buzzed.

I expected another legal update.

Instead, it was a message from the district attorney.

Captain Cole, we recovered one final file from your father's computer.

I opened the attachment.

It was dated seventeen years earlier.

Before Grandpa died.

Before the trust.

Before the shell companies.

Before the theft.

The file contained a single sentence.

IF HANNAH EVER DISCOVERS THE TRUTH, SHE MUST NEVER LEARN WHO HER BIOLOGICAL FATHER IS.

I stared at the screen.

My hands went cold.

I looked at Grandma.

She saw my face.

"Hannah?"

I couldn't speak.

May you like

Because suddenly, the question wasn't whether my parents had betrayed me.

It was whether Gary Cole had ever been my father at all.
