Chapter 14 - THE FINAL DEBT

The meeting took place at the old Mercer Market.
The same checkout counter.
The same brick walls.
The same place where Lily had once stood with eleven dollars and forty cents.
Daniel stood beside her.
Evelyn waited outside with federal investigators.
Everything had been recorded.
The cameras were hidden.
Richard entered at exactly 7:00 p.m.
He looked older than the photograph.
But Daniel recognized him.
“Uncle Richard.”
Richard smiled.
“It's been a long time.”
“You murdered my father.”
Richard's smile disappeared.
“No.”
“You ordered it.”
“I ordered him to cooperate.”
“And when he refused?”
Richard shrugged.
“Thomas panicked.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“And Lily's mother?”
“She knew too much.”
“You destroyed an entire family.”
Richard looked at Lily.
“Your mother destroyed herself.”
Lily stared.
“She tried to save us.”
“She stole from us.”
“No.”
Lily's voice was steady.
“She stole evidence.”
Richard laughed.
“You've spent nineteen years believing you were a victim.”
“I was.”
“No.”
Richard stepped closer.
“You were a witness.”
Silence.
Lily's eyes narrowed.
“To what?”
Richard smiled.
“The night your mother died.”
Daniel looked at Lily.
“What does he mean?”
Richard answered:
“She didn't die when you thought.”
Lily froze.
“She survived.”
Daniel's heart stopped.
“What?”
Richard smiled.
“She survived the shooting.”
Lily shook her head.
“No.”
“She lived for six months.”
“Where?”
Richard looked at her.
“She was hidden.”
“By whom?”
Richard glanced at Daniel.
“Your father.”
Daniel went pale.
“My father?”
“He kept her alive because she knew where the original ledger was.”
Lily whispered:
“Where?”
Richard smiled.
“You've had it all along.”
Lily frowned.
“What?”
Richard pointed at her.
“The promise.”
Daniel suddenly understood.
The first envelope.
The $7.86 check.
Lily opened her bag.
The original envelope was still there.
She tore it open.
Inside was a tiny folded piece of paper.
Her mother's handwriting.
Lily read it.
My little girl,
If you ever find this, remember what I told you.
Never trust the man who offers you everything.
Trust the man who asks for nothing.
Lily looked at Daniel.
Her eyes filled with tears.
Daniel understood.
His father had hidden the ledger inside the one thing Lily would never throw away.
The promise.
The first envelope.
The paper was actually a thin sheet wrapped around a tiny memory card.
Evelyn's voice came through Daniel's earpiece.
“Got it.”
Richard suddenly realized.
“You set me up.”
Daniel smiled.
“No.”
He looked at the hidden cameras.
“You set yourself up.”
The doors burst open.
Federal agents entered.
Richard reached for a gun.
Daniel grabbed Lily and pulled her behind him.
Richard was arrested.
For the first time in nineteen years, the Carter family was no longer running.
But the story wasn't over.

Because the memory card contained one final video.
A recording made by Lily's mother.
