Chapter 10 - The Choice

The mansion was silent.

Too silent.

Adrian stood in the nursery holding the photograph.

Hannah was missing.

Isabella was missing.

Ellie was missing.

Only Marco remained.

He stood in the doorway.

“You still don't understand.”

Adrian turned.

“You did this.”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Marco looked toward the ceiling.

“Your father left one final weapon.”

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

“My father is dead.”

“His secrets aren't.”

Marco handed him a small flash drive.

“Watch.”

Adrian inserted it.

A video appeared.

His father sat behind a desk.

Older.

Sick.

Alive.

Adrian stared.

The recording was dated two weeks before his father's death.

“If you're watching this,” the old man said, “then Marco has returned.”

Adrian leaned closer.

“I made many mistakes.”

His father paused.

“But my greatest mistake was believing I could control my sons.”

A second video appeared.

It showed Elena.

Holding baby Isabella.

Then Adrian's father entered.

He took the baby.

Elena screamed.

Adrian watched in horror.

His father turned toward the camera.

“Adrian must never know.”

The video ended.

Adrian's hands trembled.

Marco looked at him.

“Now you know.”

“Where are they?”

“I don't know.”

“You're lying.”

“I swear.”

Adrian raised his gun.

Marco didn't move.

“Kill me if you want.”

Adrian stared.

For twenty years, violence had been his answer.

But then he remembered Ellie.

A four-year-old girl had given away the one thing that could save her.

She had saved him without asking what he deserved.

Adrian slowly lowered the gun.

“I won't become my father.”

Marco looked stunned.

“What?”

“I won't.”

Adrian walked past him.

“Help me find them.”

For the first time, the brothers stood on the same side.

They followed the clues to the old Moretti shipping warehouse.

Inside, they found Hannah.

Alive.

Isabella was beside her.

And Ellie sat on a crate holding Rosie.

The person standing behind them was Vincent.

Adrian froze.

“Vincent?”

Vincent smiled sadly.

“I am sorry.”

Adrian raised his gun.

“You?”

Vincent shook his head.

“No.”

He looked toward the shadows.

A man stepped forward.

Adrian's breath stopped.

His father.

Alive.

Older.

Using a cane.

Marco whispered:

“Father.”

The old man smiled.

“You boys took long enough.”

Adrian's world collapsed.

“You died.”

“I needed you to believe that.”

“Why?”

His father looked at Ellie.

“Because power is easiest to control when everyone thinks the old king is dead.”

Adrian moved forward.

His father raised a weapon toward Ellie.

“Stop.”

Adrian stopped.

The old man smiled.

“Now we discuss inheritance.”

Ellie looked at Adrian.

She wasn't crying.

She simply held Rosie tighter.

Adrian remembered the moment she had pressed the EpiPen into his thigh.

She had sacrificed her safety to save a stranger.

Now it was his turn.

He slowly lowered his gun.

“You want the empire?”

His father nodded.

“Then take it.”

Adrian stepped between the gun and Ellie.

“But you will never touch that child.”

His father laughed.

“You think you can protect everyone?”

Adrian looked at Marco.

Then Isabella.

Then Hannah.

Finally Ellie.

“No.”

He smiled faintly.

“But I can choose who I become.”

Outside, sirens began approaching.

Adrian's father looked toward the windows.

“What did you do?”

Adrian answered calmly.

“I sent the files to every federal investigator, every newspaper and every attorney who ever tried to bring down the Moretti organization.”

His father's smile disappeared.

“You destroyed your own empire.”

Adrian looked at Ellie.

“No.”

He took Hannah's hand.

“I ended it.”

The old man raised his weapon.

Marco tackled him.

Security rushed inside.

The gun went off.

Then silence.

Adrian looked down.

Ellie ran into his arms.

He caught her.

For the first time in twenty years, Adrian Moretti cried.

Not because he had lost someone.

Because, finally, he had chosen not to.

And when Ellie hugged him, she whispered:

“Mr. Moretti?”

“Yes?”

“You still owe me an EpiPen.”

Adrian laughed through his tears.

“I owe you a lot more than that.”

Ellie smiled.

Behind them, dawn began breaking over the harbor.

The empire Adrian had inherited was collapsing.

His family was finally learning the truth.

And somewhere beyond the police lights and flashing cameras, a new life was beginning.

Not a life built on fear.

Not a life built on revenge.

A life built around one tiny girl who had given a dying man her last chance to breathe.

May you like

Because sometimes the smallest person in the room is the one strong enough to save everyone.
